You'd probably be better off modding a DS. They're about the same horsepower, and the DS is portable. Although if you're really jonesing to mod a PS1, I'd think the best you'd be able to do would be to make it portable.

A year out of school and I'd say you can get away with it, but don't keep it up. If you think this next job is someplace you'll be happy, take it. But first take stock of your current job - are you happy there? Could you be? I've hopped jobs for salary increases several times, but I'd gladly drop my salary to work someplace stable where I could also be happy. Lucky for me, I AM happy, and I'm pretty well paid :) But more important than salary is connections, so make sure you make a few good ones wherever you land.

  4. All three! on The Wii - Is the Magic Gone? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm still excited about the potential of the Wii, but all three systems have lost their luster in my eyes. Nothing really exciting is coming out for any of them in the next six months, and pretty much all I play these days is my DS and the occasional Virtual Console game. Not that either is a bad thing! Where are the system sellers - for any system?

  6. Theory on PSP vs DS games... on PSP To Increase U.S. Lead Over DS · · Score: 1

My belief is that the PSP is simply too close to a current-gen console to be an effective handheld game device... the problem is that because it has such horsepower, people expect a console-level experience on it, but because its a portable device development has a portable budget. How can you put a console-style game on a portable system? Ports and sports! On the other hand, the DS is cheaper still to develop for, and you simply can't shoehorn the latest PS2 game onto it, so some actual creativity goes into the development. It certainly doesn't hurt that the DS's form factor and touch screen also encourage creativity. Anyway, its just my theory.

My money is on DS software outselling the PSP, and the PSP floating for a few years on UMDs, primarily competing with the iPod. Maybe the PSP will outsell the DS in terms of hardware, but not games... at least not without a major climate shift.

  8. The best part is... on John Carmack's Cell Phone Adventures · · Score: 4, Insightful

...Carmack is way over-estimating performance of most phones. Only the highest-end Java phones support 200k jar sizes. The majority of consumer phones are limited to 64k - even many brand new phones have this limitation. On the other hand, he's not being 100% fair with his GBA comparison. Gameboy, GBC, and Gameboy Advance all have tile-based rendering that is easily capable of 60fps, while Java-based (and BREW-based) cell phones have only linear frame buffers that you don't get direct access to (usually). To aggravate things, many Samsung BREW phones have 250ms response rates.

Carmack will also be disappointed when he begins experimenting with BREW. BREW doesn't support threading, globals, or even static variables. I'm not even going to get started on the bizarre latencies of the API.

One of my jobs as a cellphone developer is to port Java games to BREW. Carmack's comments about how fast Java phones play like 4.77MHz IBMs is true, but the same is true for BREW phones as well. I've only managed to squeeze another 10% out of the performance on similar BREW phones. There are a lot of things limiting cellphone performance, but Java isn't one of the main culprits. Bad platform design and slow hardware are what kills it.
