How many people would likely tune in to watch a nuclear bomb go off? Seriously, this could fix the problem, AND get tons of ratings and money for TV stations. Today's nuclear detonation, brought to you by new Uranium Doritos. Either that or Russia's secret plan of making the USA nuke themselves is back in action. Oil slick? Nuke it. Termite problem? Nuke em. Homeless guy asked you for change? Nuke him.
Never saw any of the previous Doctor Who's, although my mother was apparantly a fan of the old school Doctor. I ended up watching this with some friends while studying for a unix exam, and was blown away. The 'effects' were nothing special, but still enjoyable, and I really liked the new doctor (he reminds me an awful lot of the stats guy from Criminal Minds), and the companion is insanely sexy. Wonder if she'll do something like Confessions of a Call Girl, like the previous companion. I also correctly guessed that she was running away from her wedding.
I've had a huge problem with this for ages. First of all, the only reason corporations even have a chance to argue this, is due to a stenographer writing down somebodies flippant comment over a hundred years ago during a railway dispute. Anywho, my main problem with this idealogy is that you can have a person own many many companies, so suddenly that one person has many 'voices'. The other problem was mentioned earlier. A company can't go to jail. You can fire an employee for doing something illegal, like embezzling funds, but you can't really send the company to prison.
Have u seen some of the 'stories' in fighting games? Dead or Alive 3 has two girls fight over a head of lettuce. Street Fighter Alpha takes place before Street Fighter II, and Street Fighter III takes place after Street Fighter IV. Many of the fans have even stated how they don't care that much about the storylines, as remaining canon just messes up a good thing. Most street fighting games get their storylines in anime, comics, and books, AFTER the release of the game. Imagination > Storylines
While I understand that casino's do NOT want to lose money, a game like blackjack is somewhat hard to monitor. What happens when I clearly see that a bunch of aces/faces have gone out, and change my bet accordingly? Am I going to get banned for card counting?
Every time I hear the copyright arguments, I always laugh. People see it in shades of black and white. Either you are stealing music/movies, or you are buying music/movies. While I have little or no respect for people who burn dvd's then sell them around the place, I see no problem if my buddy recommends a movie to me, and burns me a copy of it. What's the difference between that, and lending it to me (aside from the fact that he would likely not want his original copy damaged/lost)? You can complain about high school and college students not buying movies/music, but I can assure you, most do it simply because they DO NOT have money. I have downloaded only a small handful of movies and all songs I have downloaded (with a few exceptions) are songs I have either owned the cd for, or still own. Being in college, I don't have the time to go and and pay 15 dollars for a movie or a cd. And I can still look back at the 90's when cd's were going for almost 30 bucks at times, when we all knew they cost NOTHING to make. So we sat back, and let you rake in millions/billions, and now the shoe is on the other foot, and the *AA's are pissed. But you can't say they're losing as much money as they claim. I don't spend ANY money on cd's, and I can assure you, even without downloadable movies and music, I still would likely not be spending any money on them.
I live in Canada, but still see many of the problems complained about here (and faced them first hand). There used to be a law stating that colleges and universities couldn't make more than 11% of their profit from tuition. After that got scrapped the better part of a decade ago, tuition costs raised every single year. It now costs $30K just to get a simple degree. Add to that the fact that if you don't initially live near your college/uni, and need to move to get closer, rental units near colleges are horrific for their prices and conditions.
And even if you get a student load, it is no guarantee that you're in the clear. I applied for college the FIRST time about 9 years ago, and I applied for a student loan and was accepted. Start of the school year approaches, and no funds had been released. Turns out they thought I was attending second semester (which makes no sense, because my loan application clearly stated Sept as the start of my school year), and due to various practices, it would take several weeks to rectify the problem. So I didnt get ANY funding until the middle of October (my college refused to allow me to have access to my timetable until I had paid), and ended up failing the first semester miserably, and found out they didn't offer my courses AT ALL in the second semester. So I got stuck with a $10,000 bill, which got knocked down to $5000, but still. It took me 9 years to get back to school, and it's still insane (it will cost me just under $29,000 to get my degree this time).
Ireland has done wonders with free post-secondary from what I have heard. While just giving away free post secondary is a horrible idea, there has to be a better way to deal with this (ie-top students in high schools SHOULD be sent to post-secondary for free, and mid range students should have options, like working for 2 years and having money deducted to "pay" for their college). A high school education now means sweet fuck all. You can essentially have the same job with a high school diploma as you would without one. So therefore better education is going to become a VERY hot topic in the near future
Buy a crappy laptop or whatever off Ebay, and then install whatever programs you feel would be needed (something to read documents, something to play mp3s, something to play movies, etc etc etc), then put it in there with some dvds and cds full of whatever it is you need.
I still agree with aforementioned comments that a time capsule should contain other physical objects though. Newspapers, magazines, trading cards, toys....things that may be worth something in the future (oil).
I'd like to know why you think Natal or Eyetoy won't save their respective companies. Given the fact that neither company has shown more than tech demo's, it's unfair to claim either will succeed or fail. However, I've seen the Milo demo, and can see that being used outside of gaming. You would walk into a walmart, and they'd have screens everywhere, with a virtual girl/boy who would see you, recognize you, comment on your clothing, and be able to point you to where you need to go in the store to find what you want, all without menus or touchscreens or anything. Just ask Milo where the can openers are, and go where he tells you.
I agree with you. At E3 this year, Sony and MS both unveiled new motion control technology (Sony with their motion controllers, and MS with Natal). Both haven't even been released yet, and are still in development. So it makes VERY little sense to tell me that I will buy Natal next holiday season, and then have to buy Next Box or Xbox Next or Xbox 720 or whatever a year later.
No doubt the recession made these companies realize that hardly ANYBODY could afford to go out and spend $500+ (considering what the PS3 cost at launch, even $1000 is likely for next gen consoles), plus the cost of games, for a new system, when the one they have works fine (unless you own a RROD 360).
I believe that both companies motion controllers may very likely have been for the next gen, but recession woes made them get relesed for this gen (however, I do wonder whether or not the next gen consoles will support them, so you wouldn't need to rebuy them, and thus save $$$ in the long run).
On a side note, I have been completely disappointed in this gen. Sony hasn't released anything to warrant actually buying the system (unless you really want BluRay, and don't wanna buy just a player), Wii is following the classic Nintendo model of one or two decent software titles every couple of months (everything else is crap), and Microsoft may as well have a dude sitting on my front porch, who punches me in the junk and steals my wallet every so often, because all they do is charge stupid prices for EVERYTHING. I bought a 360 as an MS fanboy, but got damn, have they ever pissed me off.
Pay to Play online is retarded (especially considering 90% of the games I play involve quitting players galore), paying money for themes of games you likely own and spent $70 on is equally retarded, no internet browser (honestly, even though it sucks, how hard would it be to put IE on the 360?), Arcade titles are priced at insane prices, virtually no canadian support (at least in the US, you get Netflix...here we get like 50 movies, no tv shows, and no movie/tv related gamerpics/themes), I've had 4 360's die on me for various reasons, the list goes on and on.
I am excited to see a product like this, however I am still skeptical to its ability to be all it says it can be. How will the game handle actual 3D motion? Can I play Halo 4 on this, and actually walk around?
I noticed all the games demo'd allowed for virtually no movement except for your limbs. The other thing I noticed during the Lionhead demo of Milo, was that the arm movements seemed to be sluggish. How slow do you have to move your arms in certain games?
Without a doubt, the implications of a game like this astound me (sword fighting games, sports games, racing games, street fighting games, just to name a few). The other thing I wonder is, will the skill of the other gamer come into question? If I play Fight Night Round 5 in the future, will an actual boxer annihilate me?
...but for the most part, people are getting Halo 3 Beta through Crackdown, which is rated M. So if you own Crackdown, you should theoretically be 18+ anyways.
If the songs she had on her computer were actual songs she owned the cd's of, she's safe. Also, if she had her P2P software set so that it wouldn't allow uploads (and therefore not show what songs she had), and they still found out, then they're in trouble.
...or lack of. Seriously, every "horror" movie coming out (or even action movies and sci-fi) are coming out PG-13. Look at Alien Vs Predator. Yeah, the script was horribly flawed, and none of the characters left an impression like previous characters in their respective movies (people can list off quotes from characters in Predator and Aliens, for instance), but I am willing to bet that if they had at least shown some gore, it'd help. Hell, watch carefully, and you'll notice they never really show even one chest bursting scene.
Hollywood needs to realize that some movies just have to be rated R, rather than PG-13 so some kids can come see it. Cuz the kids certainly aren't the ones with the money to see movies on a frequent enough basis, especially during summer.
How do you get hit by a car in Alaska? It's not like there are tons of them all over the place, a la New York, or any city. You've gotta see that one lone car coming!
Well, almost. My father worked for the Board of Education about a decade ago, give or take, and when a move was made for C++ to be used instead of QBASIC (yes, that was how bad our education system was), Microsoft made the offer of "it's free for you to use, and no licensing fees....as long as nothing ever gets released." So basically if anybody wanted to make something and then release it (a game, an app, etc), they had to consult with MS first.
Forgive me if this has already been addressed (I am obviously not an engineer or anybody capable of building a robot), but why not use some sort of sonar type way of viewing things, like bats do?
Honestly, are people afraid of androids looking like humans because it's human nature, or because of Hollywood? I have no problem with a robot looking like a human. I still honestly believe that AI will never exist, nor any form of AI that even closely resembles mankinds.
Anybody remember when all the Mars missions were supposedly being "sabotaged" (read: stopped working) several decades ago, and NASA jokingly blamed it on the "Great Galactic Ghoul?"
If I could friggin' learn how to quote, italicize, and make new paragraphs, this could go alot better, lol...anywho, towards the end of your quote, it mentions taking 15 minutes to download a song, meaning 4 an hour. Perhaps that would be true, IF YOU COULD ONLY DOWNLOAD ONE FILE AT A TIME. But you can download near infinite. I picked up 30 live dj sets last night in about 20-30 minutes. Each of em coming in at several k a sec. And that's one thing that Itunes can't offer either, really. Rare Remixes and live versions of songs...which is a major reason I use kazaa (for songs that normally AREN'T released, such as Overclocked remixes of Final Fantasy)
....remember when Star Trek decided that Klingons should have funny looking forheads, instead of just being played by african americans? That's pretty much the same deal here. Times change people. What was once done 10-20 years ago can't still be done now. Or else we'd still be boogying to disco, wearing tie dyed shirts, and listening to Zeppelin. I never really watched much of the original, but dammit, I'm still gonna give the new one a chance. Cuz if anything, the stuff on tv right now just plain SUCKS (aside from Simpsons)

Until koreans start dropping dead in internet cafe's from marathon farmville sessions, I refuse to acknowledge it's addictiveness

Besides, can a beta even get a rating???
It was called 1952 - 2000.
