Get a pelican case, waterproof and near indestructible for tools and equipment.
Get another for your stuff.
They come with removable foam, and you can customize spots for each tool.
Some other tips- Carry some cash somewhere on your person other then your wallet. Carry more then one type of credit or debit card. (machine ate one of mine in china when I arrived in China. It was NOT a good day)
Printout maps to all the hotels you are staying at-its handy to show cab drivers that don't speak english.
Carry some basic things like a small travel toothbrush, and hand napkins on your person. If the plane you are about to board has the luggage loading door torn off-you will appreciate this as you spend the night somewhere with no luggage.
Deodorant is your friend-yeah they don't sweat in the 110 degree 90% humidity heat. If you were born in Minnesota, odds are you do. Don't assume things. Some fun examples- Going out to eat Pussy, in China refers to the district you are going to have dinner in NOT the activity. When Chinese are saying "nigga" they are NOT referring to any color of your skin, its not related. When asked if you want a "Chinese girlfriend" they are asking about a hooker, not if you want to meet nice Chinese women to get a girlfriend. Try to avoid conversations where at the end of it they assume you are gay. God that was funny later. Not so much at the time.
Buy tools and shavers that take both 110 and 220. Bring adapter plugs.
Hotel networks are often horrifically infected with spyware etc-keep a firewall up, and up to date anti-virus.
If you don't think you can eat those chicken feet, or bugs without throwing up-decline.
If you CAN eat horrific things, and the locals are messing with you to make you look foolish-suggest a better place to eat, and take them somewhere where they turn green. Evil...but funny.
Yeah, Maybe they should fix their support first. I've spent 8+ hrs and 62 days waiting for them to fix my xbox live purchases after they replaced my console for the red ring of death. During that time I have:
Been called a liar.
Apologized to for calling me a liar when the e-mails from them proved I wasn't
Told to re-purchase all of my content.
Told that my content could not be accessed by others on my console.
Told that people without Gold access could not access my content.
Been told that recording any calls with them was a violation of Federal law.
Been told the only recourse I have is to deal with the support rep who called me a liar-that I couldn't talk to a supervisor,OR have a different rep.
Had my case closed repeatedly while unfixed.
Been hung up on when transferred to a supervisor in the foreign support hell.
Been promised that my problem would be resolved within 30 days.
Been told later that it was a minimum of 30 days, but absolutely would be fixed within 30 more days.
Its now 62 days. No one helps when I call. Best answer is always [it will be another 30 days].
I used to be a XNA developer. I've stopped now until this is fixed.
Its been 61 days since my family has been able to play most of the downloaded content. I sent my xbox in for the red rings of death and when I got it back my content didn't work.
I've been escalated repeatedly
I've been told I would have to re-purchase all of my content
I've been told I was violating federal law by recording the conversation....from someone in a foreign country.
Told it would be fixed within 30 days
When that failed and it wasn't and I stated they had said it would be within 30 days they basically called me a liar and said it would take a minimum of 30 days. To be fair when I pointed out the email they apologized, but said it would take 30 more days. That was 31 days ago. I can't even check now to see if it works-but as of 47 days ago it didn't.
I was developing for them with the xbox xna service, but currently stopped. This christmas when it came time to choose where to spend my gaming dollars...I went with a wii again. $400 worth of gaming cash spent elsewhere. Since they won't help/listen to customers the only way to send a message is to take the money elsewhere.
My idea of fun isn't spending 8 hrs trying to get my content to work-its spending 10 minutes setting up a system, and 7hrs 50 minutes playing.
OK so you all have years of experience in c++, 6 years of code, etc.
Consultants who are familiar with jave recomend changing to java.
And changing development languages and re-doing all of this will save you time? I just don't buy that, to me it sounds more like it will make those offshore consultants more money. You're going to spend the next couple years re-writing all of your old work, not getting things done.
Well as a fellow player let me give you some informed non-marketdrois speach.
You call the December release disastrous. You have not been playing many mmo's then. It was a fairly pain free update compared to most of their competitors.
Lag-I've never had many issues with it. its certainly not a major peice of my experience. The game is suffering some growing pains, but lag is not horrible or bad like the above poster tries ot make it sound. NO ONE in my guild of 30 has ever had a character stuck as you mention.
Non-expert characters being ganked-yeah a minor issue, our guild just tells them to not go below.5 security systems. If they do-then they run the risk. Last night one of our newbs was ganked. wow....the guild bought him new equipment and spent some effort hunting for the perpetrators. It was FUN.
The ISK farmers-ccp recently made a REAL sweep of them. Notice WOW they do this, and nothing changes? I checked yesterday and the major ISK farmers were still not able to sell ISK-because they had been wiped out. ALL MMO suffer from this, but the makers of eve make some real meaningfull efforts to stop it.
You saying its a major issue in eve kind of tells me you have not played many mmorpg's. Eve is the only one I have played where they werent a issue. I have never ever had anyone I know griefed by farmers in Eve. Its FAR from a pressing problem.
The time card issue IS kinda true-you can trade time in game for ISK. CCP has made this allowed. From some GM comments it is not a popular thing, and may be reviewed.
And generally I know if my friend are online or not by simply looking at my guild chat channel.
Lets use your anology.
These are guests in the hotel. They announce that they are all gay. You the hotel management tell them, yes you are welcome to stay but you cannot encourage other gay people to stay at this hotel because folks might complain. And its against hotel policy for anyone to stay at the hotel and encourage others to stay there based upon their religeous or sexual beliefs. When you point out the Christian group staying at the same hotel chains hotel across the street with the huge banner out front saying "Christians stay here!" they ignore you.
When some protestors hear about your hotel they protest outside, and all of you are asked to leave.
You don't camp much do you?
Or travel internationally in economy class. 16 hours airborne. Can't sleep gremlins will eat airplane!
Or simply arrive somewhere feeling dead, wanting to sleep-not spend 15 minutes yarding all the power strips out of your luggage to charge everything.
You've never made REALLY long sleep in the car road trips.
Or arrive in a foriegn country, and find out that the one power adapter you need is missing from your adapter kit.
Or have 4 things needing to be recharged, and only one adapter.
Shared a room with someone, 200 cockroaches, and had only 2 plugins-one each assuming the cockroaches don't want it. And thats a big assumpton in some places *shudder*
used a laptop for more then the 5 hours that your 2 batteries lasted
etc etc etc. I for one would love more power.
We're using a esynergy CRM system here at work. Its ok, but one of our complaints has been integration problems. Oh and the fact that its crashing a lot. The crashing issue seems to be unique to our compan however, so I expect it will get resolved soon.
Anyways CRM systems are fairly complex, but ore importantly-they tend to be fairly specific to each organization, and often require customization. Can Microsoft work at that level? I have a hard time seeing it.
When our new IT person started here the first thing she did was change all our passwords and educate us about not giving them to everyone.
She demonstrated this by #1 running a password geussing program, and showing how easily it geussed our passwords.
Then #2-she asked me for help. Using social engineering I managed to get the login and password of someone at our other division. This person has access to all the payroll records.
Imagine the chaos if everyone was sent a copy fo what everyone else was making.....
Oddly enough thats what I have begun to do as well.
Nothing like having escorts call and say "If I get on your site you can take credit card for me huh?"
Incidently....there are some REALLY messed up folks out there.
"-Real-time 3d graphics of cinematic quality will always be too slow for general purpose CPUs."
Says who? Seriously. At one point people had a hard time seeing 3D graphics! I can remember the awe that doom created. And some of the latest games come DARN close.
"-developing a game with AI that needs ten times the power of todays CPUs will take many man years and may not be that welcomed by the console audience."
Again, quite often decisions on a AI's design come down to cpu power. There are some cpu intensive stuff such as pathfinding that can use more power.
"-It's very difficult to do multithreaded apps, and the difficulty rises exponentially with the number of threads."
Yes and no. I do multi-threaded apps today. However a look at the past may help you out. The Amiga had multiple custom chips, and design philosophy could change to handle multiple cpu's. Seperate out the graphics engine, the physics engine, the OS, etc etc and you can use multiple cpu's easily. Will things use the full potential? Good programing will balance the load on the cpu's to do so. Even handing off sections of things to different threads when needed. Should be interesting.
"So what exactly would the be role of the CELL processor in PS3?"
More power! Perhaps seperating out video, sound, 3D etc.
"It would make much more sense if:
-Sony developed a platform that can move insanely great amount of graphics around, with the ability to do real-time raytracing, rather than providing so much general-purpose processing power."
Actually no. The insane amounts of CPU power we are discussing here can do a lot of this, and assuming that sony will showoff only the new cpu with the old graphics chip would be a mistake. Look for both.
"-Sony developed a graphics architecture that could really be parallelised, so instead of bringing out a totally new console, they could just up the graphics spec by adding more chips. They could save millions of dollars from developing and advertising the new console."
And lose millions of dollars by selling folks one system rather then 3. Also games are made to the lowest common denominator in the console market.
The question almost answers itself.
Oh wait....why are you all looking at me like that?
Why yes I DO have a perverted mind.
What do you mean YOU would have never thought of that?
I have been to Chain. Shanghai to be specific. What awe inspiring technology I saw.
A sewage system that was obviously not functioning great.
Water that you could not drink.
Traffic which was...unbeleivably bad.
People living on sidewalks.
Oh yeah. nice technology. I've seen far superior technology in both Canada and the US. Its easy to find 10 things better - but honestly this guy had to reach.
OK. lets get this out of the way. It is NOT theft. It is NOT a criminal act [yet]. In fact calling it htat shows how much propoganda can program folks. Theft is when you steal a tangible item.
Now. Why is it social protest? Its people realizing that they are being price gouged by large corporations involved in price fixing. Price fixing and unreasonable extension of copyright. Copyright was a thing granted to people and companies to ENCOURAGE development and to help the author benefit from it. Unfortunately the length of it now does just the opposite. And in some ways this is another aspect of the problem
Recent court cases have ignored the basis of it. And the industries involved have refused to compete with each other pricewise for the most part even today, and tried to avoid using new technologies to help them stay competitive. As such people are using the much lower priced alternative of P2P, many recognize the greed and conspiracy among the music and other companies. People feel a bit pissed that they have been abused to the degree that these companies have fixed prices, etc. Some of the online music sites are a good step in the right direction. $.99 a song isn't too bad. The problem is that the music companies are going to try and conspire to raise these prices I think. I think that the record companies are in for a shock. They are no longer needed. The internet has replaced them.
As computer capabilities expand hollywood too could be in for a shock within my lifetime. I can see a day where 1 guy in his basement will write, direct, etc a computer designed set of actors and props to make a movie. Currently its a group effort, but I can see a day where 1 person alone....will make movie magic.
Adapt or die. The future is coming and if you stand against it you will fall.
Company I used to work for used a high powered laser to determine cloud cover. Its possible the pilots got hit with it or one of the competing systems.
Hey! You were no rose either. And that whole printing routine was a farce. And its YOUR FAULT. I suggested something different but you had the keyboard.
And speaking of which-you hogged the keyboard the whole freakin time too!
I bought Snapstream for $60. Its a pvr for windows-and to be honst it works amazingly well. this whole mythtv just doesnt work for the majority of the world using windows.
Of course you don't have any problems! I've been keeping your machine patched up on a daily basis Mr. Johanson! Wouldn't want others to have control of it like I do! I do this for everyone I hack into!
[This is a joke folks-its sad I even have to say this....]
