Well, as excited as I am that my question was third, he managed to dodge it quite well.
"Do you feel that $1 million dollars is fair compensation for the developer when if you were to hire and develop "normally" it would cost many times that?
Greenblatt:
The challenge is not intended to compensate for development efforts but to rather to seed the community with funds to enable members to work on the project without the constraints of financial hardship."
So in other words, they're getting development done on the cheap. Which was the entire point of why I asked that question. Its kind of like when Slashdot had that contest for the tshirt design, and the prizes were really craptacular when you consider how much money Slashdot saved on hiring a graphic designer and how much money they'll make selling your product.
Unfortunately, 1 million is more than enough to lure in people.
"While this may be a privacy issue, it can also make better drivers out of everyone if insurance rates are adjustable based on the way everyone drives."
It won't make better drivers out of everyone once they start jacking up EVERYBODIES rates.
So I have wanted a portable video player for a long time. I would LOVE to constantly be able to have some of my anime collection with me, or a couple downloaded movies or tv shows.
The big problem is that with so many groups out there releasing things, their settings and codecs etc. are fairly varied.
Which portable player out there can handle divX 5.0 (and be upgradeable to newer versions), Xvid, handle codec upgrades, etc? This is the feature that will make or break buying one of these for me.
I'm sorry for not having RTFA, but I was wondering if someone could clarify whether or not these plastic magnets attract plastic like a regular magnet would metal, or only other magnetic objects.
In that much time, there will be new vulnerabilities discovered in new software that is created. There will ALWAYS be a way, and there is no way they can guarantee this. Will computers be a little more secure? Sure, in many ways. But they will also be a lot more insecure in others. Remember, we're dealing with the same idiots who install Bonzi Buddy because he seems friendly, or Weatherbug because it sounds so convenient that they don't care abou the EULA.
I found a MoBo from an old Mac and it had the RAM still stuck in it. So I took a stick out, and it conveniently had a whole in it, so I put it on my keychain.
I also bought four boards with etching, all cut to the same dimensions and smooth with holes in the corners. A buck a piece. Now I just need to put them together in a box shape, and put a light inside with a base, and I'll have a nice glowing green lamp.
You get the comforting feeling that you shelled out more than the regular price of the game for a box that says "Collector's Edition" on the front and some extra software that modders would have done for free anyway the second they started working with the new SDK.
Enjoy your new collectible box. Maybe they'll actually include a cool manual in it instead of a tiny little booklet with 3 pages and an coupon for $1 off the Prima Strategy Guide.
You joke, but seriously, I'll bet Bose is already trying to figure out a way to do that. Actually it looks like thats the MAIN way to do it so far (as opposed to having it built in the normal manufacturing process of the car). That Lexus they have it on is a current model, so they had to add it to there.
This is great news for people who modify their cars with aftermarket parts.
Its a cool idea, and very possible what with everybody hookin up with people from Orkut, Friendster and the like.
Just realize the marketing for what it is. Do you really think a lot of hot girls are going to need to use this service?
If you're the type of guy who needs to use this service to meet girls, do you really think the hot ones will want to meet you?
These are basic questions anybody wanting the service for this use shoudl think about.
I wonder if this could be used on cars to help deal with the ancient blindspot problem. Suddenly you'd have a lot more visibility if you could make the pylons of the car transparent or even semi-transparent.
I know you joke, but for many of us, there is greater appeal in the minimal risk of crafting than there is the large risk of adventuring. Hell, if they made some of the trade skills SKILL based, and perhaps used twitch reflex systems so you'd actually have to know where to chop the tree, or how to smith the sword, I think it would be perfect.
If you don't like the PHB types and prefer to be a creator instead of a networker, why do you get so upset when they are the ones at the top? That's how you do it, and they figured out the system. I don't mean this to sound aggressive, but for gods sake, stop whining, or do something about it.
I have no pity for you. Why? Well, aside from having read Ulysses myself, I read something even worse. The Silmarillion. But it gets even worse than that.
You see, for my first research paper ever in High School, I chose to use this book. What was my thesis? Something along the lines of how Morgoth wasn't really that evil, and it was everybody else who was out to get him.
Yeah, you try proving that in a book that reads like the Torah with chapters that are basically made up of "and so-and-so begot so-and-so who married so-and-so who had three children named etc etc etc". Not a fun paper.
You know...not to ruin the joke or anything, but our current weapons targeting and imaging technology pretty much DOES give us aimbots and wall-hacks. And in real life, its not considered cheating, and nobody will call you a lame ass noob for using it because they'll be dead.

Well, hopefully it will only work with US zip codes so the Brazillians won't be on it.
For those of you about to mod me down, this is a joke. I was poking fun at the recent invasion of Portugese speakers.

Because many of us, especially Slashdotters, aren't good enough with women to have them be "readily available" as you put it.
Everything goes faster if you kill leechers.

Hell, I'd just love the large sheets of ruby and sapphires. I'd sell them and never have to work again!
(Hurries off to go submit his patent application for a method of bricks from mud and grass.)

Needless to say, I got an A.
