    We = Americans.

    1. We rely on technology too much. How are we going to test a 15 year old on math questions when they have been punching calculator buttons since they were 5? We sell calculators to specifically calculate how to tip. Come on, it's either 15% or 20% of the bill, how fucking hard is that?

    2. Being good at math means being less popular in school. It's the truth. Math has one of the worst images surrounding it. You are a tool if you are good at math. Yeah, the Slashdot crowd might not be bothered by it but a teenager going through puberty coupled with peer pressure, more than likely, they aren't going to try too hard.

    3. Athletics are deemed more important. Look at any traditional American high school. Guess who gets paid the most? The athletic director. Guess where all the fundraising money goes? Most likely the sports teams.

    4. Our teachers are some of the worst paid workers in the nation. I have a feeling that South Korea, Finland and Hong Kong pay their teachers a little better than we do.

    Certainly these aren't the only problems but they are the obvious ones. Feel free to tack on anything else.

    I'm actually thinking about dumping the PS2 altogether because of the bug. I came home one afternoon and found the disk in the mail. I'm like "Oooh... Viewtiful Joe 2, nice!". Popped it in and played for a while. The next day, I look at Slashdot, "Guess what? Your memory card has been wiped!" I run to the PS2, everything is gone. All my cars in GT3, my 40 hour save game from Suikoden III which I was going to use on Suikoden IV when that came out (if compatible), all my characters from Tekken, Street Fighter, Soul Caliber wiped. I was even a couple hours away from beating FFX. Now with everything gone, what's the point. I don't feel like trying to build it all back up again. If I'm gonna start from scratch, I might as well start from somewhere new.

    He's not kidding. Once you get an LCD (especially for gaming), you have to worry about vga vs. dvi. 17. It's Possible on The Role of Video Games for Children · · Score: 3, Interesting

    When I was younger, many of my teachers also used some form of a game to teach the subject matter. From simple flash cards, to Jeopardy like quizes, to full blown video games. I majored in Computer Science and a lot of the projects we implemented were also video games. For those naysayers who believe games are "the devil", consider how many games you played growing up and what you learned from them. Now, bringing video games into the mix may be a little different. Certainly, if used properly, video games can also be used to teach. However, I feel that there is a certain limit. One thing, flash cards are alot cheaper than computers/consoles. Two, many use computers as a short cut before learning the proper way to solve something. It promotes a sort of laziness. A lot of children can't do simple arithmetic because of the calculator. But more times than not, if you are having fun learning something, you are more likely to remember it. If you want your children to learn, make it as enjoyable as possible. If you can make a video game to do this, more power to you. Just don't overdo it.

    No, you can't. Basically, if you have Midnight Club 2 for Xbox and PS2, you will not be able to link them and play against each other. This software is designed so that you can connect only the same consoles. The problem lies within the fact that each game is designed specifically for the console. Some have different level layouts, controls, hardware limitation, etc. which make it impossible to cross link. The only game I know of that allows a cross link is Final Fantasy 11 for PC and PSX. The other issue is region compatibility. If you have PAL as opposed to NTSC, most likely the consoles will be unable to link. Hope this answers your question.

When we first booted up the new pc, we had the drive sitting outside on the top of the pc where is was bare metal. It ended up bridging all the contacts on the bottom of the drive. Blue smoke started billowing out of the drive. We yanked the power cord thinking the drive was a goner. However, when we rebooted the computer, this time with the drive safely mounted, it worked just find and kept on "floppying". The drive is still in use to this day and has outlasted every other component in that machine. Who knew Packard Bell use quality parts in their machines?

  25. Pirated to get it to work. on Videogame Piracy - Is a Stricter Approach Necessary? · · Score: 1

    It's funny about the piracy thing. I'll buy a game from the store, take it home and load it onto my pc. Only to find that it runs slow, has to verify the cd 10 times before the actual playable portion begins to load and then craps out because it somehow got the idea it wasn't a legit game.

    Then after about an hour of fiddling with it with no results, I'll go to some warez site with all the latest hacks and whatnot. I'll download the hacked version of my game with all the piracy checking removed. Load it up. Low and behold, I have a game that works.

    I'm not saying piracy is right. But when I need to use a pirated game to make my legit game to work, it sure does make piracy tempting.
