Wow, you completely missed the point. This is not really about freedom to say things it is about the freedom to not reveal your sources. In this particular case it seems reasonable, but once the precedent has been set any asshole company who calls anything they do a trade secret could prevent people from reporting on it. If people are afraid of the repercussions for whistle blowing they will be a lot less likely to do it when something important is going on.
The consequence for a court giving an order violating a state law is contempt....
Neither of them are in contempt yet. The judge is within his rights to issue the order and the journalist is within his rights to disobey it (according to Cali. law). It seems pretty cut and dried to me, thought the outcome remains to be seen.
Considering an illuminated manustcript is a medieval manuscript with gold leaf highlights, usually used in religous texts, I would hope the copyrights would have expired by now.
Software patents should require code to be submitted. When the patent runs out copyright should be forfeited as the patented code enters the public domain. Companies can then decide which protection suits them best but may choose only one.

So what? In the US, guns are still legal even though don't seem to have ANY legitimate use. The irony is that we are more likely to see P2P banned before guns are. After all, when the NRA comes to protest in numbers on your doorstep, you take notice. When a bunch of iPod toting teens show up, you probably think, "meh".

As the other poster mentioned the proposed Tivo deal seems interesting. Also, if they were planning to release a $500 media center in a year or two they sure as hell are not going to advertise it because less people would buy the mini.
I realize it is apple and all, but are you seriously taking a press release from a company at face value?

Why does slashdot hate you so much? For a geek performer with verses about Star Wars and whatnot, who appears in some of the funniest current animation, and allows people do download his first album for free, why has this entire thread been filled with flames?
but the US created the Internet. The US is responsible for the WWW. Why should anyone take away our control when it was our R&D, our money that spnosored the internet in the first place?
Actually an Englishman by the name of Tim Berners-Lee invented WWW at CERN (European Particle Physics Laboratory).

Why should a library donate its work to a for-profit corporation. If Google wants to work on this idea so they can sell more ads, then let them scan the books themselves.

I am of the opinion that free enterprise can always provide a service cheper than a government bureaucracy.
Unfortunately, in the majority of these markets it is not "free" enterprise, it is basically a monopoly. If the market can provide the cheaper/faster access people will choose it over the muni access.
