    Wow, that is a really good idea, wish I would have thought of it.

    I finally just broke down and signed up for a kung-fu class. I know that I will never stick with an excersize program unless I am interested in it (the fact that it costs a good chunk of change helps too).

    They are probably positioning themselves to be able to sell lossless encodings through itunes. Once they are selling these expect the output mp3 feature to disappear.

    I believe this is the plug-in case and for once I wholeheartedly agree with MS. If they lost this one Firefox and Opera would likely have been vulnerable as well so keep in the mind the enemy of enemies thing.

    The FCC should fine this company US$15,000 per blocked call and the fine should attract interest at current rates. If this company has pockets as deep as those of M$, I suggest going further and holding the executives to account. I hope I am not being too "right wing" or extremist.

    corporate responsibility, regulation, right wing? Furthur proof that the right/left distinction becomes more meaningless every day.

    So she wont have to pay even more bills to get online and find jobs or training or whatever? You can buy old computers that would handle the internet just fine for $5 at Goodwill these days.

    Believe it or not, you don't have the freedom to say absolutely anything you want.

    Wow, you completely missed the point. This is not really about freedom to say things it is about the freedom to not reveal your sources. In this particular case it seems reasonable, but once the precedent has been set any asshole company who calls anything they do a trade secret could prevent people from reporting on it. If people are afraid of the repercussions for whistle blowing they will be a lot less likely to do it when something important is going on.

    The consequence for a court giving an order violating a state law is contempt....

    Neither of them are in contempt yet. The judge is within his rights to issue the order and the journalist is within his rights to disobey it (according to Cali. law). It seems pretty cut and dried to me, thought the outcome remains to be seen.

    Considering an illuminated manustcript is a medieval manuscript with gold leaf highlights, usually used in religous texts, I would hope the copyrights would have expired by now.

    Software patents should require code to be submitted. When the patent runs out copyright should be forfeited as the patented code enters the public domain. Companies can then decide which protection suits them best but may choose only one.

    If it breaks you have to drag it down to the PC shop, wait a couple of weeks, and then pick it up again. When a Mac breaks you call Apple, they send out a prepaid FedEx box, and I'll have it back working within a week.

    c'mon, this is slashdot, if it breaks fix the damn thing. I would rather fix it myself right away than wait even a week.

    So what? In the US, guns are still legal even though don't seem to have ANY legitimate use. The irony is that we are more likely to see P2P banned before guns are. After all, when the NRA comes to protest in numbers on your doorstep, you take notice. When a bunch of iPod toting teens show up, you probably think, "meh".

    yah, that whole being explicitly granted in the constitution thing helps a little too I think...

    Apple has already reaffirmed that they have no intentions of making a media center:

    As the other poster mentioned the proposed Tivo deal seems interesting. Also, if they were planning to release a $500 media center in a year or two they sure as hell are not going to advertise it because less people would buy the mini.

    I realize it is apple and all, but are you seriously taking a press release from a company at face value?

    but the US created the Internet. The US is responsible for the WWW. Why should anyone take away our control when it was our R&D, our money that spnosored the internet in the first place?

    Actually an Englishman by the name of Tim Berners-Lee invented WWW at CERN (European Particle Physics Laboratory).

    I am of the opinion that free enterprise can always provide a service cheper than a government bureaucracy.

    Unfortunately, in the majority of these markets it is not "free" enterprise, it is basically a monopoly. If the market can provide the cheaper/faster access people will choose it over the muni access.
