I agree with your points, but that problem exists with the current system too.

Most societies have differing shut down times. Heck, here in the United Kingdom most towns have differing "half closing" days where the stores generally close half way through the day. Most European countries have similar arrangements. It's also common practice to be able to drop into a French bakery at 6.30am, but in the UK a bakery may not open till 8.30, and so on.

That's a good point, but that's not the official definition of a dependent. Being dependent on a wife is miles away from being dependent on a company.. since being dependent on a company is really being dependent on yourself, since you can't keep a job without working properly.

When the wife leaves/goes broke/whatever, it's going to be hard to go and find another one willing to keep you, but when you lose a job, finding another isn't an impossibility.

Besides, of course corporations want to make a lot more than your salary.. if they didn't, they wouldn't bother hiring anyone at all.

got married, and most of my concerns were eliminated...because my wife's father (who died when she was young) left her some money, I am able to work without having to submit to the most lucrative job--I teach interactive multimedia design and spend the rest of my time working on my own projects.

Great story, but I don't think the message it gives off is all that useful. You mean, you were totally flat broke, but luckily you married someone who was willing to support you.. and, well, it's not all that bad now? While you got lucky, this isn't really a practical situation for most people.

You make it sound like giving up the corporate world is the best thing in the world, and sure.. it can be.. but since it turned you into a dependent, it's not really the best way out, is it?

Australia has a VERY vibrant gambling scene. There are areas of the country where people pile most of their monthly salary into slot machines (which they call "pokies"). Australia has one of the highest concentration of poker machines in the world, and a high percentage of gambling addicts per capita.

Australia isn't interested in banning gambling as it brings in so much money. They just want to ban online gambling, as the money is likely to leave the country and not get taxed by the Australian government! This is protectionism, not some moral judgement on the part of the Australian government.

I wonder how long it'll be till Bush passes a law so that non-US companies can no longer advertise to US customers. It'll stop money leaving the US economy after all, and reduce the gaping trade deficit.

Not a one-off either, it seems most people who go through their UK support operation (which isn't even part of Acer) have similar complaints. Even if it's just a UK thing, it still reflects on Acer, and they should invest the money to make their support worthwhile in every country they want to work with. Other than that, the machine was cheap and is very well featured, but.. things are only as good as the weakest part of the chain.
