But what's really happening is this: incomes of a few CEOs go up from (say) $1M to $2M, while incomes of 10 times as many engineers go down from (say) $100k to $20k. That's a gain in money terms, but it's very bad for 90% of the people affected. So, it's bad for the USA.

Speaking as a non-American, it seems to me that the problem is not outsourcing (as there seems to be more or less a general agreement that it makes the US as a whole wealthier), but an improper distribution of wealth. Perhaps you should consult your neighbours up north on how they've kept the playing field a bit more level.

Upgrading to the latest version of Fedora is as hard as copying and pasting from the Red Hat website into the yum.conf file, then typing "yum upgrade". Most people will be able, after 1 1/2 to 2 years of using a system, to copy and paste into a text file.

I see this kind of comment all the time and I just have to say something: if you know what needs to be done to get something working, then actually doing it is usually a piece of cake. It's figuring out what the problem is or what the best approach to correcting something that's usually the issue.

I consider myself an experienced newbie in Linux. I've been using Linux on and off since '97, starting with Slackware and now using Mandrake. I just spent two days trying to figure out why I was unable to configure the DNS server settings on my box at home (all changes I made weren't being saved). It turned out to be that the DHCP server was sending the wrong DNS server address (I can already hear hundreds of people screaming "of course it's DHCP you idiot!"), but the point is, why was Mandrake giving me the option of configuring my DNS server if it then rejected that value and went and got its own?

Sorry for the rant but it's pretty annoying when everytime I face a problem I just KNOW that it will take days rather than minutes to solve. This is largely due to my ignorance. But here's hoping that Linux distros start coming out with an easy to use centralised help file (please don't tell me they already do, the help files that come with Mandrake right now are extremely weak, at best). BTW, easy to use doesn't mean it has to cater to the lowest common what's-that-small-blinking-line-on-my-screen newbie. Am I the only one who sees a huge need for documentation for people who actually know about computers but don't necessary want to get into function calls and IRQ addresses?

Here's another reason: Accuracy (which is another way for saying speed I guess)

I typed "my own way" for 8 years and I became quite fast at it. Finally I decided to learn to type properly, and what a difference it made. The key that I used to hit the most on my keyboard (the backspace) is now the key I barely touch. Which also means less frustration at having to correct things all the time.

Another added benefit is that since I'm looking at the screen instead of the keyboard, I can see mistakes as they happen and correct them immediately. I no longer have to type out an entire sentence, read it again, and go back and correct the mistakes I made (be they typing, spelling, or otherwise).

All in all, it's something that will take 30 minutes of your time each day for a month to learn. It's a skill you'll never forget and can do wonders to your efficiency (and frustration levels).

Living in a country where mobile phone use is quite common and is not seen as being annoying in the least, it's quite strange for me to read all these posts about how they are perceived differently in the US.

Let me first start by saying that I agree mobile phone use does have its etiquette, and certain limits should be respected (i.e. volume of the ring tone in a quiet place, such as a library).

But I really think it's only a matter of habit. I believe if an American lived in Sweden for a while (a country with one of the highest mobile phone penetration rates), they would quickly get used to hearing phones ringing and people talking on them all the time, without feeling necessarily annoyed. It's the constant reinforcement by others in US society that mobile phones are in fact extremely annoying that maintains this perception.

It's almost as if people go out of their way to get annoyed at someone talking on the phone. Because logically speaking, and as the article states, if you only hear half the conversation, you should only be bothered half as much. And if listening to just one side of the conversation is bothering you, then why are you listening in the first place?

Also if you save all your phone numbers on the SIM card, moving to a new phone is as easy as moving your SIM card to the new phone (although with the added functionality of handset phonebooks, this is become less popular).

Cool post. However a lot of posts seems to be making the same mistake and calculating cost of lost employee's time as their actual cost to the company (salary + benefits). Actually, the cost of lost time is the productivity lost (since the salary is being paid anyway). This is usually many times salary cost.

For example. A salesperson that does $4,000 in sales in an 8 hour day loses the company $500 of sales for every hour their are not working. At 30% markup on costs, that's about $115 of lost profit.

Same applies to support departments: Accounting, finance, management, IT, everyone is working to make the company money, either directly or indirectly. It's this money that's the true cost: the money that's lost as a result of less business, not the money paid for unproductive time.
