  8. Re:IBM and the Holocaust on Amnesty Calls Shenannigans on MS, Sun, Cisco · · Score: 2

This is really not much different, in my opinion. Cisco is a publicly traded company on the NASDAQ, which is a US based stock market. The shareholders (mostly US citizens) should be ultimately responsible, not only for ensuring profits, but also be held responsible for any misdeeds the company commits...

But where does it all end? If you have a 401k that invests in tobacco companies, are you liable? If you work at NASA, which employed nazi scientists and used data collected by the nazis to plan space missions are you liable? Corporations are amoral as are many investors. It is up to organizations like AI to make a stink about these kinds of things to discurage investment and influence buying decisions.

How about a "buy from an independant label day" Agree on a certain day when we all go out and buy a CD from a company who is giving good music at a good price w/o the copy protection. Support your local bands. I have a couple of friends who have bands and I'm listening to one of their CDs right now.

  15. upgrade? on EMI Customer Relations Tells It Like It Is · · Score: 3, Insightful

At first there were records and they were good. You could easily seek to any song, but they weren't very portable. Cassette tapes were a step forward in this respect, so people switched. Later on there were CDs which are just as portable as cassettes with the added benefit of seeking. For the average music listener, 8 track, DAT and reel to reel offered no advantages and they sort of died out.

Now the music industry wants to change formats to encrypted digital disks. What are they offering us to switch? Extra content? Digital liner notes or cover art? DVD-esque interviews, band commentary? The disks aren't even a new color or shape for crying out loud. Hopefully people won't rush out and buy new players "just because".

  18. Re:Not quite a planet, eh? on Earth's Little Brother Found · · Score: 5, Informative

Interesting physics, but Kepler's third law says:

The squares of the periods of the planets are proportional to the cubes of their semimajor axes
    (http://home.cvc.org/science/kepler.htm).

So the mass of a planet has nothing to do with its orbital period (well, assuming it is small enough that it doesn't make the sun orbit it). So anything placed at Earth's distance from the sun and moving at the same speed would orbit the sun in the same path the Earth does regaurdless of its mass.
