In the 80s we didn't even bother with passwords, okay maybe by the late 80s. And every machine on the network had an IP that was directly on teh internets. As for this article, it's yet another example of how stupid people, even the intelligent, are when it comes to passwords. Who the fsck writes down a dizzying array of passwords? I know about 5 passwords off by heart at any given time, and use a password manager and an encrypted database to hold all of my passwords. Of course, without 2-factor auth those lists of passwords are seriously dangerous and that, dear humans, is where the danger lies. If anyone manages to crack my passowrd manager or my encrypted database, I'm fscked. Okay, let's hear what the folks have to say about this age old problem.

  23. IANAA but on SCO Claims $15,300,000 From SCOsource · · Score: 1
I am not an accountant but their revenue claims from year to year seem a little dubious to me.

Revenue was $20,055,000 for the third quarter of fiscal year 2003, and $15,384,000 for the third quarter of fiscal year 2002, representing an increase of $4,671,000, or 30 percent.

From 20M to 15M looks like a decrease to me unless you're travelling backward in time.

This increase was attributable to $7,280,000 in licensing revenue, which was the second consecutive quarter we generated revenue from our SCOsource licensing initiative, offset by a decline in product revenue of $1,835,000 and a decline in services revenue of $774,000.

Then they try to pull it off again,

Revenue was $54,964,000 for the first three quarters of fiscal year 2003, and $48,773,000 for the first three quarters of fiscal year 2002, representing an increase of $6,191,000, or 13 percent. This increase was attributable to $15,530,000 in licensing revenue, offset by a decline in product revenue of $7,135,000 and a decline in services revenue of $2,204,000.

How the fsck do they interpret a decrease in revenue for 3 quarters from 55M to 49M as an increase of 13%. Maybe they're talking about an increase in decreasing revenue.

I agree that a double entry system is far superiour, from an accounting perspective, than the cash accounting system used by M$ Money and Quicken (neither of which I would ever consider using if not just for security reasons.) But for this program to be successful, a very good interface for setting up one's accounts is a must. My point is, even if you cannot code, you can still contribute to the project. Come up with a nice method for adding accounts, and entering transactions so that they are automatically updated in both entries (please excuse my butchering of your profession if my desciption is off). And let the coders know your thoughts.

I'd love to use GNUCash, but I just gave up on setting the beast up, so I'm back to just downloading my accounts to text files and putting them into spreadsheets.
