Maybe the open source community is getting a little too upset about all of this. Why aren't the Firefox 1 users chiming in? Products get updated, and the people who are focused on maintaining those products don't want to develop and support for multiple products. Technologies on the internet change, and building support for those new technologies into all of your older products is inefficient.

If getting a reminder that they are no longer using an up-to-date product is the end of the world.. grow up. I had figured the open source community would be chock full of computer security freaks, but arguing that you should be left alone to use your old, outdated product that no longer gets updated, without any notice that this might be a bad idea.. that's just stupid.

Pardon the talking out of my ass. A quick look at wikipedia gave me this:
Several of Bush's aides and supporters walked out during Colbert's speech, and one former aide commented that the President had "that look that he's ready to blow". Although President Bush shook Colbert's hand after his presentation, Colbert received an icy response from First Lady Laura Bush.

I believe there was other stuff about the media not picking up the story, etc, that I had read, but I'm not in the research mood, just the foggy memory and talking out of my ass mood. In fact, it's right there in the wiki article as well.

Cheese-grater was really not that far off, and many of these were created and in use. There was a cheese-grater-like sheath I believe. Think metal condom with blades on the inside.. eek.

I don't know about you, but when I went to college, I had no job, was eating cafeteria food, and every day when I went to the cafeteria, I had to walk past a guy in the lobby at a desk. He offered free t-shirts, free candy, free toys, and all you had to do was sign up for a credit card. Doesn't matter if you already signed up, doesn't matter if you already have one, just fill this out and grab a free gift.

Needless to say, I wasn't the only person with *NO SOURCE OF INCOME* who was offered credit cards. In my humble opinion, if credit cards wish to offer HIGH RISK loans to people who have NO MEANS to pay these loans, they should be forced to eat the loss, not the 18 year olds with no job who were coaxed into signing up with free gifts and empty bellies. Why should everyone else be expected to support a business model that is built upon such high risk, instead of the companies taking the risk themselves?

My wife is a librarian, and she got her undergrad in Information Systems (librarians are required to have a masters in Library Science, fyi). She is not the most knowledgeable computer user out there, but she is far more capable than the rest of her staff.

The divide is likely caused in part by the age rift.. librarians are paid very low wages for a required masters degree (admittedly, more in college than in the public domain), so the job is still typically held by financially comfortable older women, just like the stereotype.

If the salaries of libraries was adjusted to be more in line with the knowledge they are expected to have, and the degree they are required to earn, then the technology initiatives that libraries are pushing these days would likely be more effective, as more "digital natives" would be attracted to library positions.

Of course, the JBM that I bought locally was something I'd describe the way you did. In this case, I would have to say that freshness counts for everything, and this is probably the perfect example.

On a tangent, the eggs from my fathers farm are also clearly above and beyond store-bought eggs, even store-bought 'fresh free range' eggs that I get here in Texas. Sure, the eggs you get in the store have a use-by date on them.. but did you know you could keep fresh eggs sitting out on the counter (ie: not refrigerated) for a month before you need to even think about the 'fridge? Freshness really is a luxury that our modern society and global economy misses out on more often than not for the sake of convenience.
