    This was more or less expected. A few years ago, owning an iPod was still a novelty but nowadays everyone has it - it's just not as cool anymore. It's the same reason the RAZR phone doesn't raise eyebrows anymore. Things seem to be lining up for Microsoft when the Zune comes out.

  4. Go with C# 2.0 on Making an Argument Against Using Visual-Basic? · · Score: 1
    I'd been predominantly programming in C#/Java until I was called upon to do a project in VB.Net. I was very skeptical initially but as the project progressed I realized that it was pretty much same as C#. It had all the features (plus some more) that C# had. A major reason why I actually started liking VB.Net was that the IDE (Visual Studio) for it was a lot better than the one for C#. This was in version 1.1 of the framework and Visual Studio 2003. The case insensitivity of the language just added to the ease of programming.

    Having said that, the new version, 2.0 and Visual Studio 2005 makes up a lot of ground for C# to catch up with VB. The IDE is almost up to par with the VB IDE. In my opinion VB.Net 2005 actually went a step back when it introduced "Default Instances" - a concept where you can call non-static members without instantiating the object.

    My recommendation would be to use C# if you're on the 2.0 version of the framework and VB if you're on 1.1. C# is a pleasure to program with in VS2005 due to the improved IDE features and also the code snippet feature.

    The client I'm currently working for has a core product that is modified as per each customer's requirements. The modification process works exactly like this:
    if (customerName == "cust1"){
    // customizations for customer 1
    }else if (customerName == "cust2"){...
    }
    .. and so on. There's a new customer? Easy, add another if statement. The entire code base is a hodgepodge of conditional statements. Needless to say, the program has tons of bugs and the performance sucks. Its a wonder to me that the customers put up with it and even continue to pay for it.

    Seriously, though - in a previous /. article it was noted that in 2003 (I beleive) there were less then 20,000 IT jobs created - yet 60,000 H1B workers were brought in? Now, lets see.... 60,000 - 20,000... 1+1 /2 *6 = ahh $#@% IT!

    To be exact, the quota for H1B is 65000. And while a big chunk probably is filled by IT professionals, there are other skilled professionals (architects, engineers) who also apply for H1B. Also, many of these IT jobs really do require skills that can only be filled by highly skilled foreign professionals (majority of our grad school students are from foreign countries).

    The rush to file for H1B is so huge its scary - it used to be 195,000 and it suddenly went down to 65,000. A small error in filling out the form or missing a deadline by a day could mean having to wait until the next year.

    an H1 worker who will work for less pay...

    Its been mentioned over and over again - even if they are willing to work for less the employer has to pay them the prevailing rates.

    Hotmail is possibly the worst of the major email providers right now. Which other email provider occasionally gives you the message "service unavailable, try again later"? I started moving away from hotmail after the time I desperately needed to get to an email and it would continuously give me this message. My other peeve with Hotmail is that the junk mail folder counts towards the measly 2MB, so most of the time my mailbox is overflowing. Even if they give 2GB of space (when they do give it), I'm still moving away from them. Yahoo and GMail are definitely better alternatives.
