In 1987 I was a hardware tech- went around to our customers, installed equipment, network cable, etc. etc.

I had put in my two week notice, and on my very last day of work, I had to install a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) at a customer's office is Los Angeles. (The place I worked was in Orange County)

So, I cruised on over, and started the install. This type of UPS actually used car batteries, wired in-line. 8 of them went into the unit. I set it up, tested it, and all I had to do was finish up...

Well, while putting the case back on the UPS unit, I dropped it, and the metal case hit the + and - terminals. The thing was sparking like crazy, the case got burnt, and one of the batteries was bubbling up on top. And the fuse (50 amps) blew.

Since this was about 3:00, and I still had to drive back to OC (geez, people actually associate OC with that crappy show now) and it was my last day. I just plugged everything back directly into the wall, closed the door on their equipment closet, and told them everything was cool.

Went back to the office, got my final check, and of course, didn't mention anything to the boss.

To this day, I still feel bad about it...

(My wife is standing next to me, wondering what the hell I am doing posting this inane story on /. on the 4th of July...when our neighbors have a warm batch of chocolate chip cookies with our names on them...so, sorry if I can't go back and edit the post...I'm being rushed...)

If Joe Schmo is your 'casual' gamer, then he would own a Gamecube.

So, Joe Schmo with an Xbox turns out to be at least the most dedicated financially to games.

I am one of those Joe Schmo gamers with an Xbox. And !GASP! I buy/play a lot of sports games. I'm not a 'casual' gamer, it is my primary hobby- and I buy about 2 games per month.

Ninja Gaiden is a very highly rated game- most sites give it well over 90%. (Gamerankings total is like 91.5%). This NOT a game that 'needs updating'. This is a case of refining an already great game.

Adding camera control, and new enemies is a great idea. Kinda like Diablo II LOD adding 800x600 support and that entire 5th act. Did the 'fix' the graphics? Now..they just 'improved' the graphics. Because the game was great beforehand, and they just made it better. (But still...the resolution was pretty bad before, and after the update)

Downloadable content is one of the strong points on the Xbox. Microsoft knows this (they push it all the time) so they next Xbox will definetly have some sort of mass storage that can handle large downloads. We just don't know what it is yet.

Back in 1983-1985 I ran a BBS. I had an awesome array of 6 Apple II floppy drives. At that time I didn't wish for a hard-drive (because I wasn't really familiar with them) I wished for MORE FLOPPIES! Just imagine if they could read on BOTH SIDES without flipping them over...during this time, forward thinking companies were trying to figure out how to squeeze a hard-drive into PC's..but I was thinking of making floppies better.

Well, while we all sit around thinking that Microsoft is a bunch of dummies, because we really want our hard-drive..they've probably got something up their sleeves that will be much, much better.

After all, they were the first to include the hard-drive, and the other manufacturers hadn't seen the necessity. Now that we see it as a necessity, the might just be going to the next level. I'm waiting to see what the next Xbox mass storage will look like...I'm guessing it will be even better.

So this past April's sales surge won't really be part of the picture by that time. In 18 months the consoles will probably be in the $99 range, and retailers would be happy as shit to make shelf space for something that costs $299.

Same shelf space- but 3 times the price?

Also, right NOW there are a ton of good games for the Xbox, with quite a few good ones coming out in the next 6 months (if we are to believe the promises). But already there are titles being delayed to the next version of the console.

I'm surprised that you (an Xbox owner) find the software selection is "three little rows of stuff that's either terrible (Outlaw Golf) or available on PS2"

Using Outlaw Golf as an example is a shame, because it detracts from the rest of your post. Outlaw Golf is multi-platform (PC Xbox Gamecube) and isn't that good.

But if you looked a *little* bit further, you would have seen Links 2004. Links is the best golf game out (Play Links, then try Tiger Woods...no comparison) and is an Xbox exclusive- at least for consoles. Other than your example, you have other games like Rallisport Challenge, Ninja Gaiden, Crimson Skies, etc. etc. There is actually a wealth of great games out for the Xbox. Not all are exclusives, but they really don't need to be, in order to be good games.

Now, strategy and RPG games are probably the weakest spot in the lineup. But I think that strategy games are weak on all consoles.

I'm expecting that the next Xbox will really help solve this problem. More power to work with, and the ability to better support HDTV (more power) will enable the developers to create more complex games- it would be great to play Rise of Nations while sitting on my couch.

I would love to see a controller come out that would be targeted specifically for RTS games on the next Xbox. Something with more buttons. If Microsoft can create a standardized secondary controller scheme, different game types could make the jump to consoles a little easier. And NO, I am not talking about a keyboard/mouse (although that would be nice) but a controller that I can use while reclined in my chair. Just one that has a line of 10 buttons to select different units, potions, whatever.

I think that your first item "It tells a part of the story of Riddick not found in the movies." is the most important.

Halo (the game) 'inspired' 3 books. The first two I read were great- Fall of Reach and First Strike. They told stories from the Halo universe (I hate that term) and I thought they were interesting.

After going through those books very quickly, I started to read "The Flood" which is the book based on the events of the game.

Oh crap this is so damn boring. Yes, they did a great job detailing the game. I can read the book and know that when he opens a particular door there will be a shade on his left, and right- and one of them will be manned, the other will have a grunt sleeping next to it. Yes, I know this already from playing the game, I don't need to read a book about it!

For me at least, anytime two forms of media try to tell the exact same story, it gets very boring. Harry Potter had this problem for me. The books were great, and the first two movies were pretty much exactly what I had imagined while reading the book. But that made the movie boring. I don't really need the affirmation of my imagination up on the screen.

So...in conclusion...I'm glad they didn't base Chronicles of Riddick on the same story as the movie.

But, as a Live subscriber, I think the patches would be okay, but I understant why they don't allow it.

But with the vast majority of Xbox owners NOT on Live, this would give Microsoft a very bad name in the industry. (Yes, for a lot of you they already have a bad name) It's better if they make the studios do a recall, essentially to 'pay for their crimes'.

But then again, if they allowed patching via Live, they could take it out of the developers hide. "Okay, you want to patch via Live? That will be $2.99 per patch" (not to the subscriber, to the studio). That would be a dis-incentive, but at the same time would allow the service to go through when necessary.
