"Better than Firefox? I went there using the latest version and I still got a pop-up."
I use Opera -- I didn't get any pop-up. And even if I did, Opera is still better that Firefox. Now you can get it for free without ads. We only have to wait for Opera company to make the code free too eventually, so poeple we'll be able to admit that it's better that Firefox. Right now because of ideology they can't admit that.
if parking spaces and roads (read closed standards) were made only for one type of car (or had "only MS cars" signs), if all the major car saleseller would have made contract with the same car manufacturer and were not allowed to sell other car models (and they didn't want either since the other car would not find parking space and road to drive on -- nor the public would desire such a car) that would be a closer analogy.
It might be integral part of Windows Operating System, but you can run it on Linux if you want (actually the license probably doesn't allow you and also why would you? Opera and Firefox are ten times better) but that was a joke and a small reference to how they killed their competitor (because just think about it: if you already have Windows, and 90% of the people do, than IE is "free" for you, but if you wanted to install Netscape it meant an additional spending).
Anyway, a joke that needs to be explained is probably not a good joke.
My point was the consumers might decide that they are being ripped off and might prefer to copy CDs and to download music for free. Exactly the same point was made by Steve Jobs when he said that everybody will lose if they raise the prices/tune and that people will start again to download mp3s for free.
Sellers will be the first hit if the price is set up too high. For now it looks like million of people decided that $.99 is an OK price and they prefer to buy than download for free and risk a letter from RIAA, but if the price increase (at the point that can get a cheper CD than download from iTunes) then I'm not sure they will continue to purchase music.
" I swear, arguments like that just deserve a RIAA wake-up letter." I hope I explained better my point so I will not deserve a RIAA letter:P
"I appreciate that certain usages may sound grating on the ears to somebody who had that particular point beaten into their head as a schoolchild (i.e. take vs. bring)."
English is my second language, I still shudder every time I hear "He was like.." Maybe because it is an illogical construct that would sound like hell in my native tongue too, I don't know. But I think that considering a mistake "a creation and adoption that fill an important gap in the language" is extremist and silly at the same time.
I saw so many people getting score 5 for replies to this troll that I almost want him to continue to post the same shit over and over again just to give oportunity for briliant answers:-)
"Why is it that for Linux to succeed Microsoft must fail and vice versa?" Microsoft needs to destroy Linux because if there's a clear free alternative to their OS market forces would end up destroying Microsoft.
(market isn't free because of lock-ins: proprietary formats and special deals with manufacturers).
I would turn the question in the other direction, why would you use an OS under KDE that's not free (as in freedom, as in non-DRM, as in non-proprietary, as in not tied to one company) and it's also expensive?
Oh, but it's really easy to make people upgrade. You break the files compatibility just a tiny bit, nobody will notice, except for the companies that want EVERYTHING to work (pretty much everybody) so they will have to upgrade since they cannot have a mix of versions. Bill you are a genious! We need the latest Word because of its features -- bullshit! We need it to be compatible with other people's Word. That's why Massachussetts did a smart thing by switching to an open format.
do you want me to list the 20 extensions or so that you need in order to make Firefox have the same functionality as Opera (and by the way Firefox it will still be clunky)
At least with Linux (in most cases) you don't have to pay to try a distro.
Another difference is that all distro maintainers try to give you everything they can, while Microsoft tries to restrict you and to make you pay more for different "features" -- that's the main difference and if you don't get it I'm sorry there's no hope for you.

Fortunatelly MS monopoly starts to crumble.
Is the AI cheating in Civ? (of course it does in my opinion)

"this new initiative is unique in that it targets Internet pornography featuring consenting adults."
Is it even legal what they do? Not to mention wastful...

Me was very creative here: maybe if we sprache like this it were still korrects in the eyes of linguists.
"So I guess no songs should be LESS than $0.99"
Yep, let the market decide. I think the decision will be to download mp3 for free.

"Does Yahoo mail let you use an interface like gmails? Or do they 'arrogantly' deny us that choice?"
Damn! Yahoo doesn't let me get rid of that pesky "DELETE" button, I cannot bury it somewhere deep in the interface. Those bastards!
"Opera free? Without ads? But Microsoft says companies can't survive like that!"
Of course, that's why Microsoft started to distribute IE for free.

Those are fixed costs not variable that doesn't matter too much when you sell million of units.
Why does it take so much to release it? I've been using 1.99999999999 for half a year. I hope at least will be high quality.
The competition would drive the price well bellow $140.

"With a 3% market share, there isn't much profit motive in exploiting OS X, so hope Apple keeps flying under the radar."
On the other hand those people that use Macs seem to be rich.

"which we all know is currently a pipe-dream..."
To assume that all people know as little as you do it's a big fallacy.
"When will the Slashdot crowd finally stop bashing MS products and Windows in particular? "
When MS ans Windows will stop sucking -- probably never!
Actually running XP with anything less than 256MB is a pain. So... should we explect that we need 4GB to run Vista well?
