    and the Terminal Services Client. My hardware DB(access, so its just barely a DB) is resident on the card. With that I have everything I need to support servers in 7 national and 4 international data centers, serving some 8 to 9 million email recipients. Now if someone could make WebSphere and a terminal server play nice I'd be golden :)

    I agree with you in theory on apps though....Most of our clients could in reality still be on the mainframe with 3270 connectivity and text email, but human nature being what it is...ooooo loook NEW PRETTY LIGHTS and BUZZERS....Droooool

    Bands make decent money touring, labels lose money because of the need to actually give the band some of that money, in most cases an ACTUAL % of the GROSS ticket sales. The guys I know don't get rich, but without the tours they'd have nothing and they are under contract.

    BTW I have an Italian gentlement friend on his way to your location to 'discuss' your associating Phish and the Rolling Stones in the same paragraph. Phish has more talent in whatever guest 'star' is on stage with them at any time, than the Stones do period these days. The most talented person in the stones entourage HAS to be the make-up person, who somehow makes Mick and Keith NOT come out like a campy english version of Weekend at Bernies :)

    NEW expansion of NWN...3 years ?? I am glad to see some games make their way onto Linux but geeze, I played the game thru 3 or 4 times and then uninstalled it. I just recently dug it out, for the expansion pack that is out now....

    You missed my point, breaking while trying to merge is NOT a recommended tactic. I did read the article and from what I can tell this will introduce like a 1/4 to 1/2 second delay depending on how alert the driver is. I am a certified race course driver and I completed dozens of driver safety and corporate driving school classes. I have the qualification if not the reflexes to be a professional driver, I do know a little about it. Breaking will already have started, the cars will be rolling forward in a pitch and seriously affect steering...

    The phone line is seperated from the cable line at the fiber box...EVERY COMPONENT gets a dedicated line...they don't mess around :)

    They are small, only in Calif and Minn. but there service is fully fiber to the house, they offer phone, cable, and TV at SUBSTANTIALLY LOWER prices than COMCRAP and they offer a better selection of channels. The only downside is the phone is not self powered like the old landline princess phones on a ma-bell connection. So when the power goes out, your phone is out as well :(
    but I've got a cell for emergencies like that.

    If you find a corporation EVER doing ANYTHING NOT FOR PROFIT, be very worried, it IS for profit but there is some reason they are hiding it from you. Expect nothing but pure profit motive from a corporation and you are on sound footing to deal with them. Greyfox has the right idea, the most dangerous people in the world are FANATICS, and a pure alturist is A HUGE FANATIC.
    Single people are generally good natured and friendly, the bigger the group, the lower the combined IQ is and the more likely the group is to make stupid emotional decisions.

    As technical design employee that supports Stock trader's and asset management employees, we are required to keep all business communications of those class of employees for SEVEN YEARS. We've had to install a fiber SAN network and Hitachi arrays to keep all the data, and some STK tape silo's to back up the data again. The cost is INCREDIBLE, our management almost went so far as to forbid the use of tools like this because of the cost, but the folks in question make a TON of money for us and were able to show how important real time collaboration tools like this were to their business model.

    search engine let them win, but for now NOTHING comes close to google, hell I do google searches and come up with references to M$'s sites faster than I can search the MSDN or TechNET. When looking for HP/Compaq spare parts it is MUCH faster to google the numbers and find a 3rd party vendor that links to the source from HP/CPQ than it is to search their very poorly organised conglomeration of a site. M$'s site will return an unknown error message or unknown Qarticle, when google will have cached the pages already.

    I do fall in the uninformed but seeking info group, however I NEVER CONSIDERED myself a soup (consume ?). My Bro and Sis are a geneticist and a molecular biologist so I do have some background info.
    Somehow you being among the 'WE' that claims to grasp the complexity of the situation does very little to resolve my cencerns.

    you are cruising on the free-way at speed, the car in fron off you slams on its brakes. You realize that you are folloing too close( just like everyone else), and quickly check the lanes to the left and right, taping the accelerator you slide to the right and avoid the hazard, giving the driver behind you ample time to break and avoid the same obstacle....NOW the same scenario, only as you scramble for an exit to the left or right, your car begins to brake by itself making a lane change MUCH harder than it would be if you were at traffic speed or slightly faster. Granted this is probably a fairly rare happening but there are a LOT of options and complications to deal with, and I for one would not feel comfortable driving in a vehicle which did not respopnd EXACTLY as I asked it to.

    what with scientists just discovering a gene from GM corn skipped into a wheat field next door, you gotta wonder if somthing like that is possible with this stuff. I think we are messing with somthing we really don't understand. We've just begun to realize the depth and tangled nature of the gene pool. Who really knows what else we've opened up by moding for these seemingly harmless changes. Not that I am suggesting we stop exploration, but releasing GM things into the wild seems a bit premature.

    so turn off the ctrl-alt-del requirment. It can be done under all the M$ OS's that have it, just as you can do away with the login requirments. I am using a 100$ fingerprint sensor for all my login needs these days, lazy but it works nicely.

    I realize IBM touts Linux support, but in the REAL world, they won't give any solid SLA's unless you are using AIX. We've also got a Z/OS mainframe in here and we are testing Linux on it. I have to assume we will get some iron clad uptime agreements on that platform. I don't mean to sound as if I don't like Linux, quite the opposite, but I am forced everyday to confront envrironments where it still falls short. The gap IS getting smaller, and the thought of Linus going to work on the kernel full time is AWESOME.
    As for phasing out everything but Linux, we just signed long term agreements MVS support, MVS batch is still damn hard to beat and VTAM is SECURE like nothing else.....

    did mean to sound like I was lording over anyone, the tone was in response to the parent post and his attitude that his very real and important, but admittedly small piece of the business world was the end all be all, and his decision was the only correct response. I guess I just fell into the same trap :(

    I dunno, having our servers gigabit to our T1 improved thru-put substantially, but yeah u r right as far as the average client goes. What I found giga useful for was streaming movies inside my network. Most peoples routers/gateway are dsl/cable and 10 mbps anyways.

    I have watched hours of several beta testers and I have to agree. There is some potential there but it will not be ready by release. I also want to say, the Jedi stuff BLOWS...perma death for playing a Jedi ??!?! While the skill trees seems deep the exp system is rather sad, personally I won't be joining, I'll just wait for EQ2, but I also know that just the NAME star wars ensures at least initial profitability, though give the mediocre quality of the last movie releases, the Star Wars franchise is getting watered down.

    u r correct, and a wireless hub with lots of folks, say a lan party with 50 people would be a nightmare of crossing and lost signals. I've seen some very funny things with that many people and wireless mice as well.

    Bottom line is 100 mb cat5e or if you are lucky Gigabit. I always borrow a cisco switch from work for the weekend to ensure some true thruput goodness.

    lap up, not for customers. Until they understand the BASIC difference the record and movie leeches are getting exactly what they deserve. Corporations spent BILLIONS advertising and creating an unthinking market that just eats up what is put on their plates. Now the beasts' appetite has exceeded their control and they are beginning to worry. If they had dealt with the CUSTOMERs in a erspectful manner in the first lpace these issues would never have become problems. Greed spawns gluttony....
