As wonderful as this battery would be, I seriously doubt that any government would allow any such nuclear material to be distributed to the general population. I doubt it would ever be safe/practical for general use.
I mean what happens when your neighbor throws one of these things away in dumpster across the street from where your kids are playing and the casing corrodes?
Gee, why stop there, let's also make sure that he has to wear one of the ugly old vintage 1950's mail carrier uniforms and prevent him from ever washing it. And then force him to wear velcro boxer shorts so he gets chafed the whole time. Oh, and let him wear decent hiking boots but force him to always have a big rock rolling around in each one.
Or possibly probabation/community service would be more appropriate?
Absolutely 9 years is too long. I hate spam as much as anyone, but c'mon!
Frankly, going to prison for sending spam seems silly anyway, we send too many people to prison for frivoulous things that would be more effectively punished in other ways. I'd rather leave prison for the violent criminals.
They are still supporting cable directly in that you can record a raw signal. However, most cable companies are switching over to encoded signals, so you need a cable card to decode that signal. These are already available for certain televisions that support the cards.
Unfortunately, cable cards currently only support one way communication so pay-per-view won't work with them.
I think for this to really work for TiVo they'll need two way communication support with the cable cards, support to record high def TV, as well as a dual tuner so you can watch one channel while recording another.
It definitely looks like a missile to me. That also might explain why there is no apparent wake from the impact, kind of like when an olympic diver pulls off a great dive.
I think the point here is not to "ask" the machine for it's own checksum. The ROM image or chip would be removed and check-summed individually. There is no way to bypass this check short of "switching" the ROMs under the table.
I thought the ion pulse cannon disabled ships without damaging them. Before a game patch dissallowed them, you could build heavy ion pulse cannons on your ships, which worked wonderfully. With a couple of doomstars so equipped you could literally take out an entire enemy fleet before they even got a chance to shoot at you.
Apparently the folks at Micro Prose noticed this as well and disabled the heavy version via the patch...
Well, if you're in a bar it's extremely difficult to have any sort of phone conversation. Sending text messages is a much better form of communication in this situation.
Plus, you get the fun of reviewing your conversations in your stored messages the next day.

No, from the article it sounds like the cold water from the lake goes directly into the city's water supply, after absorbing the heat from the cooling system. This is no different than simply sucking the water directly out of the lake for drinking (which Toronto was certainly already doing) except that now that water isn't so cold when it gets there.
If they were just using the water as a coolant and pumping it directly back into the lake this would likely have negative effects. But since they were pumping water from the lake anyway, there should be no environmental difference at all, except the energy savings of course!
My mom certainly has no clue that there even IS anything other than IE to use. Most of our mothers probably don't even realize that IE is not "the Internet".
This would indicate to me that if Microsoft didn't ship with IE as "The Internet" (tm), the vast majority of mothers would never even have the opportunity to use the internet. Maybe this isn't quite as bad for everyone as most of us think...
Oh come on, at least spell "America" correctly. And what's all this "evil imperalist nazi" crap all about?
My evidence that America does not practice imperialism is simply that they don't have an empire. Frankly there is nothing else stopping them. And no, the temporary occupation of Iraq does not qualify as such!
By the way, let's take a step back to admire how incredibly well the countries of Japan, Germany (East and West rejoined a while back, thanks in part to America), and South Korea are doing.
Actually, as posted elsewhere, this is incorrect. Frozen H2O forms a structure that actually is less dense than liquid H2O, which is why ice floats.
Don't forget that much of this ice is above the waterline, which once melted would transfer below the waterline, raising sea level.
This is true, but the part of the ice that is above the waterline is entirely made up of the extra "structure that... is less dense than liquid H2O". Hence, when melted it will compact back into liquid and NOT raise the sea level. It's a question of mass, not volume!
Once you have that training, the command line is a very useful tool. But if you can't get the training, and aren't self-sufficient or technically apt enough to go to the bookstore and buy a book on how to use the command line, you're screwed.
I would maintain that in the context of an administrator the command line would actually be more user friendly. If you don't have any technical training or aren't technically apt you probably shouldn't be a system administrator in the first place!
Another advantage of the command line interface is easy script-ability. Anything you can do from the command line can be put in a script to automate that process, something that is vital to any administrator.

This class of satellite -- no longer launched -- carried a nuclear reactor to power a large radar dish that enabled day/night snooping of Earth's oceans.
Yes, I'm sure that the Soviets were using this for day/night observation of Earth's oceans. Or possibly day/night observation of the missile silos in the US. But it's a tough call.
A cell phone that *worked* would be nice...

You know, what would be really be something is a cell phone that actually worked! One that wouldn't break the first time you dropped it, that would get usable reception (even in my apartment), was small enough to fit in my pocket, and was easy to use.
Why is that asking so much? I don't need a camera and don't care about playing games or any of the other junk they put in cell phones now.
Imagine if the development time taken to add all these extra features was instead devoted to actually making the damn thing stable and reliable!
Unless the clock on the court's server was using NTP or equivalant, it probably was not completely accurate. Of course there is no mention of the clock's accuracy, but how can you make a judgement without this information?
And anyway, it's four minutes and 27 seconds, c'mon!
It has nothing to do with whether or not he *needs* the money. If it's in his contract he's entitled to it, period.
How many folks out there would appreciate their employers under-paying them because "they had already been paid enough", or some such non-sense?

I can't believe that the poster is serious about moving to China of all places to enjoy more freedoms.
Good luck pleading your "rights" when you get caught reading a website you're not supposed to, or even receiving anything resembling due process.
You may take your freedoms to China, but they will promptly be stripped from you at the door.

So now instead of just blowing out exhaust fumes, it's blowing out water vapor? I'm sure that would do wonderful things for your laptop/pda...

Hehe. Actually, that is pretty funny, now that you mention it.

Who decides what "hate speech" is, these "international experts"? With free speech you have to take the good with the bad. Education is the key here!

I think the idea here is that a properly run democracy does serve the people, since it by definition would be controlled by the people.
No other forms of government have demonstrated themselves to be superior to a democracy in this respect.
