  1. Re:Why the prequels stank on Harrison Ford Turned Down Han Solo Role · · Score: 1

Are you sure the episodes 1-3 were written before 4-6? At best Lucas had an outline of the entire story (1-6), then wrote episode 4. The rest was written as the movies were made. The only good stuff is in episodes 4 and 5. The rest is filler. RotJ is just filler until Luke finally confronts his father and the emperor. Heck, he started with episode 4 because he knew the first part of the story wasn't enough to make a story out of. These stories are always better when the backstory is hinted at rather than spelled out explicitly. Look what happened to the Matrix when they tried to flesh out that story. The idea that Lucas actually had a complete grand vision for all six movies is a myth. He had a very vague outline that lacked all the details that made a good movie and when he tried to write the first three episodes and add those details, he failed.

  2. paper jams on Self-Recycling Paper · · Score: 3, Insightful

Seems like there would have to be a whole paper etiquette developed for this to work. Like paper clips only, no staple. No folding. No crumpling. Careful with the corners. If you don't, the paper will jam the printer.

It could work, though. For example, your department or team has a meeting. Different folks pass out relevant information. Immediately before or after the meeting they may also send .pdfs of the documents to everyone who attended the meeting. At the end of the meeting everyone can return the paper documents so the paper doesn't get bent out of shape.

Then again, if you're going to go to the trouble of sending everyone electronic versions of the documents, why not give everyone tablet pc's and forget about the paper altogether?

The weird blocky effect on the antenna is a result of the antenna "wobbling." Perhaps you'll recall the antenna on the scorpion tank in the original halo. It flopped back and forth. The antenna is apparently not supposed to be a stiff metal rod, but bendable. It wobbles when the vehicle moves. Load up Halo, get in a scorpion and check it out.

OTOH Its as if these guys believe that their criticism and analysis of video games will pull video games out of the cultural and intellectual gutter.

Games will evolve and gain respect on their own merit and with the talent of creative developers. Analysis by actual game designers would be more insightful. But then again, they are too busy making good games. Just like great authors don't often write about literature. Though some do, and it is often quite good.

I've often wondered when or if games will cross over into the realm of art. I'm sure there are examples of this beginning to happen. Though I suspect we'd be reaching and smudging a bit. To much game, not enough art. Too much art, not enough game.
