Canada is number 1 for piracy? Funny thing is, a couple of days ago the Australian media ran a story that ranks Britian 1st, Australia 2nd and the US is 3rd in online piracy. And I personally think that none of those countries could hold a candle to some of the eastern countries - china/thailand/etc. Maybe that's a new strategy!
Step 1 : Get the local media of each country to tell the people that they are the worst pirates in the world Step 2 : ?? Step 3 : Profit!
Manufacturers may not be able to legally set the minimum price, but in the SCUBA diving industry it happens a lot. The manufacturer refuses to sell you stock if you do not agree with their pricing structure and there is a minimum initial purchase. A lot will also not sell you stock if you are already selling a competitors product or if you are running an internet business.
If course, many of the internet dive equipment suppliers get around this by doing deals with legit shops and cutting them in on the deal.. or even waiting for a dive shop to go under (because they are trying to compete with discounts of over 20% when bought over the net) and buy all their outstanding stock at knock down prices.
I live in Australia now, but I'm writing this from the perspective of living the last 5 or so years in the UK (east london in particular).
Police in the UK in the last few years have had pressure to crack down on young 'hooligans' roaming the streets at night causing damage. I don't think that these kids were doing anything wrong, but there were plenty of 12 year olds I saw in my time in the UK that should have definately been reprimanded for their actions, if not locked up.
Some examples.. My mother came over to visit me and on the first evening she was in London she had an (uneaten) apple thrown at her while walking from the station to my house, hitting her in the chest. This was delibrately thrown from across the street from one of a group of around 15 10-15 year olds.
When cycling home one day, a couple of kids on a scooter travelling in the opposite direction suddenly stopped. The kid on the back threw an egg, which hit me in the shoulder. I was going around 17-18mph at the time and it didn't tickle. My friend had the same thing happen a few years earlier, except it was thrown from a moving car in north london. It hit him in the eye and he has lost partial sight in one eye.
I couldn't park a car on the street for more than a couple of weeks, or it would get broken in to. I'm fairly sure it was kids, since the car was never driven away, just the window smashed or the lock broken.
When walking home through a small park, another one of my friends was struck on the back of the head by a full 2L PET drink bottle. The kid still had the bottle in his hand and when my friend turned around, there were 5-6 or so kids ready to "go at it". My friend just walked away.
One or two 12 year olds are nothing to worry about. But 10-15 little bastards, some with kitchen knives or metal pipes or whatever have the capability to kill 2-3 adults. And get away with it! because they know nothing will happen to them because they are kids. They know all their rights and none of their responsabilities.
It's situations like this that ABSO's were created, which is why I'm all for them.
The most complicated portable watch ever made is the Patek Philippe Calibre 89 pocket watch. Although it doesn't keep track of the wobble of the earth, it does keep track of things like sunrise/sunset, the position of the stars, moon phases, leap year, etc.
I don't know the price but since their wristwatches start at around USD$8,000 and go up to over $200k, I suspect you could buy a very nice car for the price. Patek make rolex look like cheap crap (which is mostly true).
I don't know if this is the reason for the trial, but Tasmania has only one power company for the whole state (Aurora Energy, or when I worked there.. the Hydro Electric commission). In the 1950's, a forward-thinking premier of the state invested a lot of money into powering the entire state via hydro electricity. Being an island, it's also fully self-contained and I believe generates a fairly hefty surplus each year (or used to..)
> Ask someone from British rural areas what he thinks of the oil tax
er, they would probably say "I don't care", since their farm equipment runs on tax-free (red) diesel and their 4wd (or SUV as you like to call it) runs on regular diesel.
If he wants to just mess around, you can get an ARC buzzbox, handheld face shield & rods for $50. No need for space for storing compressed gas, monthy payments on the cylinder hire, etc.
Gas is cool and very versatile, but ARC (MMA) is way cheaper to get started if you just want to learn.
(and TIG is da bomb, I have a cheap inverter setup. Can't do aluminium, but is still cool)
I was at university at the time and some of the warez groups started trading mp3's. We downloaded the files and couldn't believe the quality of the encoding and how small the file was.
When I told one of my other friends about it, he said "bullshit, can't be done. You guys are lying". My response was to shrug my shoulders.. I didn't care if he believed me or not. Of course 3 months later he comes running up to me telling me about this new compression format called mp3..
And Chris, just in case you're reading this.. There's a reason you flunked compsci and switched to an english major;)
Have you priced mandatory support contracts for commercial hardware? As in, if you don't buy our support contract, we don't sell you our hardware? They run 50-100% of the purchase price per year for up to 5 years.
When I moved here from Australia, I got a quote on the car I drive back home (I was 27 at this stage and had been driving 8 years). The car I paid AUD$2,000/yr for would cost me £13,000/yr (somewhere around US$20,000) to insure.
Obviously that was just a "fuck off" quote.. but even a few years later (29 at this stage) when I was trying to insure a 15 year old 1.1 Nova, I was paying £500/yr for tpft (the car was worth £200). Now at 31, I still pay £800/yr for a 1991 325 BMW.
Dresden was bombed because it was a staging point for Germans to attack the Russian front. The Russians requested the allies to bomb Dresden, which they did.
They heavily bombed it. But only as heavily as any other "heavy bombings" at the time - ie. they didn't put any extra effort into bombing it. The effect of the Dresden bombings was so bad was because most of the buildings were made of wood and burned very easily. Additionally, there were no air raid sirens or procedures in place in the city, since it had never been bombed most of the population didn't know what to do.
Memory? Same thing. Open Case (no Screwdriver), take out the plastic side panel, pull Fan Assembly, put in Memory, plug in Fan Assembly, put in side panels, power on.
That's funny because on my (PC) case it goes Open Case (no Screwdriver), put in Memory, put in side panel, power on.
Sounds about 4x faster than on your Mac. Also, if you don't want to move power cables out of the way each time you upgrade, route them properly in the first place...
Sorry to tell you this, but you're completely wrong. Pure O2 is not perfectly safe at 1 ata for long exposures. As I said, look up "whole body oxygen toxicity" or "Pulmonary Oxygen Toxicity". Look, Ill do it for you:
Humans can live normally for seven days with elevated oxygen levels at about half ata, although the level of hyperoxia that can be tolerated indefinitely with no pulmonary effects cannot be identified with certainty. However, exposure for 24 hours at 0.75 ata causes pulmonary symptoms in association with a significant decrease in vital capacity, and the rate of pulmonary intoxication increases progressively at higher oxygen pressures.
ok, so I was wrong about 0.25 ata, it has to be 0.5 ata minimum. If you don't know this, perhaps you should try recertification? I recommend the IANTD or TDI Advanced Nitrox course, I found them both very informative.
Actually, pure O2 is toxic at 1 ata (ppO2 1.0). Anything beyond somewhere around 25% O2 will give you "full body oxygen toxicity" if exposed for long enough. Also, modern rebreathers have no problems delivering the required pressure (which is delivered at ambient). The single biggest limitation on rebreathers (after scrubber life) is the diver. Nobody wants 6+ hours in the water, where 5.5 hours is on deco.
Except it's (currently) not, since according to the article he can't run it while both the power & batteries are plugged in, otherwise it would overcharge the batteries.
For a while now, there have been rumblings on the viewaskew messageboard (owned by Kevin Smith of Clerks fame) that he would be somehow involved with a StarWars TV series. Whenever asked he always said either "Yeah, I've heard that too", or made no comment - ie. neither confirming or denying the news. So he could possibly involved somehow..
The "buzz" at the moment is that Kevin Smith (of "Clerks" & "Mallrats" fame) has been asked to be involved in some capacity (writing/directing?) in a TV version of Star Wars. Kevin won't confirm or deny when asked about it..
Actually, the government owns "your" property. Don't believe me? Try not paying your land taxes and see what happens.

The wife of one of the guys I work with was a chemist working for Glaxxo-Smith-Kline. Although she didn't go very far 'up the chain of command', even she knew that there was a very large focus on developing drugs that don't treat ailments but provide ongoing relief. Perfect example is asthma. There is no cure, but you can buy two inhalers per month for the rest of your life for the low, low price... you get the idea

Awesome info, thanks for sharing.

Holeee-shit I remember that book. I was one of my favourites as a kid.. looks like you can even download an electronic copy
And you clearly know NOTHING about export beers! :)
The Fosters that is brewed for export is:
1. Brewed (relatively) locally under license; and
2. Is sold as Crown Lager in Australia
Fosters is very popular in London and is also very drinkable.
I assume the problem isn't the sex itself, but the potential end result.. Just let them stock up on RU486 and all is well!
