completely different circumstances and completely different release schedules. DNF was announced to be released in 1997, hl2 the first "date" was in 2003. it hasn't been pushed back ad nauseum like so many people believe. just because a game gets released doesn't mean the company immediately begins work on a sequel. valve went whole hog onto tf2 after the relesae of hl, they then a few years later started on hl2, and as such haven't had nearly as much development time in hl2 as the 3drealms crowd did on dnf.
no no no, it was never meant to be out the next year. It was all a y2k like bug. they idiotically type in the date 07 for the release date the program dropped the leading 0 and seeing a one digit year added 199 to the front, completely changing the intent of the date "7" which was of course meant to be 2007. so see they're still on track for a 2007 release!!
How would proving life exists elsewhere prove that there is no God?
It is entirely possible for God to exist along side natural evolution. evolution could be a creation of God as well. And with an Infinite God, it is simply pride and arrogance to think that we are His only creation.
what is the new HP media center pc then? i wouldn't call it a workstation... heck i'd be hard pressed to call it a desktop really... yet it has PCI-X slots...
BAH macs have always had good games...
Nettrek... damn that was fun! was my first network game experience. such fun blasting my buddies while crusing in a romulan bird of prey...
I wasn't replying to anything about how much they charge. that wasn't the post I was replying to. They have a monopoly on their product anyway. of course its not a true monopoly because you can produce another movie and compete. its not giving them more protection than IP law, its giving the more control over distribution. tough distribution licenses would do the same thing. all region coding does is give the tough distribution licenses teeth. I disagree that there should be control, revenue is king, and as long as the majority of people accept a policy that policy will continue. Region coding to me is merely an inconvenience. So this is capitalism, and capitalisms undesirable traits. but its obviously being accepted by the market.
you're right, region coding is nothing to do with copy protection, nor has it ever been claimed as such. it has to do with worldwide releases and marketing. and marketing to different countries at different times isn't illegal. they don't want a movie to be released on dvd in australia when the movie is released in theatres just a week before. but was released 2 months earlier in the US. While I agree its unnecessary, it had its purpose, but with most new releases being worldwide release within a week or two, all it seems to do now is delay the dvd release unnecessarily.
and how is it anti-competitive? I'm just curious about that comment. seeing as only the movie studios are allowed to sell it, they have the right to sell it in whichever countries they want. Its their product, they sell it to resellers who then sell it. only thing I can see thats anticompetitive is the fact that they have exclusive rights to marketing their product. which isn't anti-competitive, thats capitalism. you want to compete with them, produce your own movie. I find region coding more frustrating than anything when I want to purchase a dvd thats only available in Europe or the UK, and not available in Canada or the US yet. but thats not anti-competitive... its similar to them not producing a french language version of a movie. is that anti-competitive? no its just disallowing french only speaking people from enjoying the movie, and it ends up hurting them in the long run.
Region coding is merely a control method for the big movie studies to control where the dvds get released. Small movie studies release region free dvds because when they produce dvds they don't have big marketing plans to roll it out in one area of the world and then another etc. Also their releases aren't as anticipated as say Lord of the Rings. I mean the following of the movie "The Gamers" by Dead Gentlemen Productions, is miniscule compared to the following of "50 first dates".
what about the children in the playground the flying car crash lands in? either intentionally or unintentionally...
mechanical failure is a greater concern when they start making vehicles for the masses, and mass produce them. and seeing most people's attentiveness in maintaining their cars, i give it about 4 months before the first flying car crashes due to improper maintenance. and what happens when it runs out of fuel? that is what concerns me with regard to flyiing cars. people will always try to push their cars further...
I seem to recall that the webdings font was intentionally done that way because of the random faux pas with the wingdings font. What if it was TCP that did that or ASP, or MSF, or RFC, or any other TLAs out there. regardless of the actual lettering used there would be the conspiracy theorists out there who would see the use of any TLA to produce that character combination in wingdings as a conspiracy by MS. just like the Q33NY "message".

Myth: Chicks don't dig geeks, no matter how much money you make.
Reality: Some chicks do dig geeks (waves to gf Hi honey!), unfortunately said geek needs to make sure he looks clean and well kept. and then there's the sub-set of female geeks, which is another story entirely. (no my gf isn't a geek, but she likes geeks... all her past bfs were geeks)
I've said it before, patent law needs an overhaul. most notably a limit on patents applied for per year for corporations. make it some obscene number like 10. it'd stop corporations from fileing puny litigation use only patents that wouldn't stand up to scrutiny. this would still allow the independant inventor to patent his widget and allow corporations to patent important innovations they develop. as well as put a stop to this rubber-stamping of corporate patents and renew faith in the patent system.
you completely missed the point I was making... that does "make their job easy". i never disputed that. in fact I said MS does make their job easy. as you even quoted so nicely. however, If a unix/linux/bsd os suddenly became more popular than Microsoft, while it may be tougher for them to write viruses etc for it, they will come and they will be just as numerous. malicious viruses are written for the platform where they can do the most damage. or more accurate damage the most computers. the wider the spread the higher the fame. they may take a few years to get as fast releasing as they are now for MS, but they'd still be coming out. there are vulnerabilities in linux. but the simple fact that there are millions more computers running windows than linux leaves the virus writers an obvious choice as to which OS to write for that will infect more computers. add to that the fact that linux users tend to be more savvy when it comes to computers and viruses, and you have an obvious target. Windows. the fact that its easier is a bonus. and to be honest I'm no programmer, but what I do know that the most wide spread viruses don't tend to do what you suggest. even spyware tends to create its own processes under false names. I've seen only a few pieces of spyware which actually infect other processes. most run by themselves. or run as services. that being said its not impossible for that to happen.
So, there'll have to be a different way to infect *nix pcs... it may take a few more months to get a good strong virus out there for it, but it would happen. IF linux ever gained a superior market share.
don't take this the wrong way but, if the person is using a Win98 machine, chances are its an older machine and they want to keep it working. I have a friend who's using an old P200 with win98, she can't afford a new computer let alone a mac, the computer she has was gotten used. she's not too smart when it comes to computers and linux is a bit much for her. that in mind, she did get broadband, and hooked up without a firewall or anything. and immediately started getting stuff sent her way... she had the foresight to tell me this and call me in to fix it. it only took me about an hour to get it up with a firewall and cleaned from spyware.
this isn't a flame but merely a first hand perspective on this "she should buy a mac or run Linux" idea. Its enough that I'm called over there at least once a week to fix problems it'd be worse if I had to go over there to show her how to do things in linux. I'd rather put out small fires than have to teach her linux. as for Macs well, cost is a big issue with her. she can't afford a mac. I know i know... but its true macs are expensive. and you know one thing mac pushers forget? if Mac ever did get 50% of the market share, guess what platform the script kiddies would be writing their viruses for... They don't write viruses for MS because MS is easy, and easily exploitable, that just makes their job easy, they write them for MS because MS has the market share and they can infect more pcs and cause more damage by choosing MS. same with spyware.
but its far from the "White only club" that its made out to be. sure there's a lot of Europeans play it, and not many blacks, but thats hardly the NHLs fault... and I think if I looked into it you might not be able to have an entire team, but certainly a line or two. i didn't even mention Georges Laraque, or Donald Brashear, or Sean Brown. and several others. you could get two lines, (11-12 guys).
now now, there are black people in the NHL,
to name just a few
Grant Fuhr (Goalie - Edmonton Oilers during their dynasty years in the 80s)
Freddie Braithwaite (Goalie - Edmonton Oilers, St Louis Blues, and others)
Mike Grier (forward)
Anson Carter (forward)
Jarome Iginla (forward)
and many more whos names escape me at this point.
well, first off, I was making a funny, a couple mods got the joke... secondly, i never argued against that, I was just commenting on the "uselessness" of the service... its not useless, as I pointed out. its useless for home users yes, well, I use it at home as well, to send a quick message when I need to reset our flakey linksys router, and I don't feel like walking downstairs, when internet access is down. my linksys router blocks those spams anyway. but it definately doesn't need to be on for home users. I never argued against that. I was kind of hoping back when XP was released that that was one of the services defaulted to off in XP home edition. they could have left it on by default in pro, but home it definately shouldn't have been on. that and a bunch of other stuff that they left in.
"Space is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly hugely mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space."
it was being developed with the US air force. to help train pilots and to investigate causes of crashes. the goal was to use the technology along with the black box so that they could tell how long the pilot was looking at each gauge. possibly allowing a bit more insight early on, like he was checking the fuel gauge more often. maybe it was going down to quickly. also to help pilots more efficiently scan their gauges. they found they could shave off a few seconds every minute if they adjusted the order they scan the gauges, that wasn't very long but found inefficiencies and were able to shave precious seconds off seconds that if were spent looking in the right places they could save lives... that sounds like a benevolent use of the technology to me...
its law... a US class action lawsuit generally doesn't allow "foreigners" to claim. US law has no jurisdiction in other countries. that doesn't mean the same laws don't exist in other countries, trust me I would have been in on a few class action lawsuits if I could have been. and no I'm not depending on US money, US money helps but we don't depend on it where I work and live. without it the economy would be different. and we wouldn't be dependant on it. Cuba's economy has certainly seen an improvement recently, thanks to tourism. and not one dollar (legally) from the US. however americans have been known to put canadian flags on their backpacks and pretend to be canadian to go there... Beautiful beaches...
