  1. Re:Mac bashing? on Are Media Writers Biased Towards Apple? · · Score: 1

Just a nit... the browser that comes with Mac OS X - Safari - doesn't use the Gecko Rendering Engine. It uses KHTML.

    Otherwise, well stated.

  2. There's nothing unfair about it... on Are Media Writers Biased Towards Apple? · · Score: 1

They all cover Apple so heavily because its products are making waves, even with the glass ceiling imposed by Microsoft. When Apple succeeds, it's a feel-good story, because the better team is winning, despite how dirty the other team is playing. It gives the masses hope that something better is coming.

Quote: "With no Microsoft-centric frame of reference, Microsoft cannot look good."

Of course it can, in the same way Apple does: by making better products, which empower and enable, rather than taking up people's valuable time with administrative tasks. There's no unfairness here; if anything, there's evidence of a natural balancing force at work.

And there's nothing stopping Microsoft from using its power to change the world for the better. They certainly could, with over 90% of the market in their control; they simply choose not to.

  4. MOD PARENT INSIGHTFUL on Sony and Toshiba Give Up On Unified DVD Format · · Score: 1

It's certainly not funny, it's downright true. The ability to cheaply produce and distribute cheaply and discreetly to the masses makes DVD even more attractive to the pornographer than the huge Hollywood movie studio. Many a format has been spurred into the mainstream by this phenomenon.

  6. Decline in Word-of-Mouth Advertising? on Firefox Share Slipped in July for the First Time · · Score: 1

I, for one, know that I've been lax in introducing the Firefox browser to my IE-using brethren of late. That could be, however, due to the fact that everyone's sick of hearing about how great Firefox is, from me and others in my group.

I wonder how many others are in the same boat. We're in the browser business where I work, and our product managers have expressed a certain weariness with the hardcore Firefox crowd, simply referring to them as "the Jihad".

  7. Thanks, Geeks! on More Mac OS X on Plain Old x86 Boxes · · Score: 1

I'm glad there's been such a great effort to make this possible... it just makes it much more likely that Apple will employ stricter measures to stop it in a production release. Never seen so many people jump to the conclusion that the desire to keep the OS platform specific is EVIL... not that there might be a reason for it or anything.

Steve Jobs' *other* computers, the black, magnesium, sometimes-cubical NeXT systems, had 2-button mice. Apple brought the NeXT OS to the Mac, but not the mouse to drive it.

I can't wait to give one of these a shot; I hope it can replace my Logitech at home. It's not all about buttons... the Logitech's shape is so damned comfortable.

  11. Similar to Nintendo's Decision... on Xbox 360 to have HD-DVD, Eventually · · Score: 1

Nintendo has decided that their next-generation "Revolution" console will not support HD resolutions, sticking with tried-and-true 480i/480p. Their reasoning is a bit different... they feel that HD adoption is not currently sufficient to justify the added expense of supporting the 720/1080 resolutions.

They have a point: while a fairly good video board can drive complex 480p graphics at a consistent 60 fps, it takes a much pricier board to deliver the quality gamers demand at 720/1080 without dropping to 30 fps, or below. I envision that, in 2-3 years' time, should HD sweep the nation, Nintendo could conceivably release an upgraded Revolution with HD support. What I don't know is whether or not those high-end consumers will be willing to spend the dough. A trade-in deal might help smooth such a transition.

At any rate, this seems to be Microsoft's plan, regarding disc media type. If it works for them, it will likely work for Nintendo, especially since the gamer's initial investment is bound to be much lower with the Revolution that with the XBox 360.

  14. IBM not significantly better... on Apple Switch to Intel Not a Big Loss for IBM · · Score: 1

Just from a high-level perspective, it's a mistake to believe that IBM will continue to dominate Intel in chip sophistication and performance. Honestly, you don't think Intel's got some hot stuff they'd like to put in a desktop, but can't right now? Intel, like any other company, has its secrets.

As far as desktop chip manufacturing goes, I'd have to give Intel the trophy for best performer overall. Compared to Intel's track record, IBM's entry into modern desktop processors is far more recent, and not as solid, especially where cost, quantity, and build quality are concerned.

In the end, as I see it, IBM makes processors that can cure cancer, and save the world. Intel makes processors that can run my desktop computer really well, really fast, and fairly inexpensively.

  15. Just like Mac OS X, then? on Longhorn Drops 'My' Prefixes · · Score: 1

The term "Computer" has been used as the "root" of the Mac OS X Finder since version 10.0. Also, assuming the "my" drop is universal, Windows'll now have "Pictures", "Documents", and "Music". How unique.

I know that these terms are really generic, and Apple holds no rights to the usage of them without the word "My" preceding them, but it's just par for the course. Thank God "Program Files" isn't a place most users go, or Microsoft might rename it to "Applications".

  16. The Reality of the M.Home... on Microsoft 'under attack' On All Fronts · · Score: 1

'All the technology can be bought off-the-shelf and fits subtly into your home.'" ...and all you need is an IT staff of five to keep it all running. I forsee some pretty interesting results coming from hacked bread recipies.

Meanwhile, Apple has wireless home audio distribution working perfectly, installable in seconds, and usable by mere mortals. It's called Airport Express, and also provides remote printing and inherently extends the coverage of your wireless network.

Too bad most people will never know about it... gotta love Apple marketing.

  18. You can't beat integration. on Can TiVo be Saved? · · Score: 1

The problem I've always had with Tivo is that, with the way I prefer to connect my A/V components, Tivo can not record anything but Basic Cable. It cannot view, nor record, digital cable programming.

So, when Time Warner rolled out the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 (and now, 8300) DVR boxes, complete with dual tuners, I knew that I'd found the device for me. One device can record two digital programs simultaneously, while watching a third. No IR transmitters, no headaches of any kind.

Now, I'll be the last to sugest that the Explorer 8000's interface is better than Tivo. Quite the opposite in fact. But the integration of the DVR and Cable Box outweighs the negatives. Also, the Passport (the Explorer's UI) interface is getting much faster and more intuitive.

In addition, TWC is currently rolling out the Explorer 8300, which can allow multi-room viewing. You only need one Explorer 8300 DVR box, and then you can watch programs recorded on the 8300 from any Explorer 2000 (or better) terminal in the home. No ethernet, no wireless, just the same ol' coax that's already installed.

Integration wins. Even with CableCard and other such innovations empowering newer TVs and DVRs, Tivo will have a VERY hard time holding up to the infrastructure of a large cable company, especially Time Warner.
