"So it's ok to "promote" shooting people, running people down and using / abusing prostitutes (GTA and plenty of others) but it's not ok to "promote" tagging a wall. Hmmmm we have a very weird society."

It's probably because kids are more likely to imitate a petty crime they see in a video game versus something more heinous like murdering a hooker. Kids are always looking for ways to push the limits of right and wrong, and grafitti is smack dab on the borderline. Frankly, I would be concerned if graffiti was a problem in my area.

"Free speech means just that. It means the freedom to offend."

Does it? Maybe by your definition. Isn't the act of being perpetually offended a form of oppression? Certainly nobody feels free when they have to exist in an environment that completely contradicts, redicules, and suppresses their worldview. A devout Christian would not feel free in an environment filled with nudies. To assume that its possible to satisfy everyone without some sort of conflict and oppression is foolish; some people will feel free, and others will not.

Universal freedom can only exist through the universal acceptance of our differences or through a homogenuous blending of belief. If people one day stop taking religion, culture, politics, and other things so seriously, perhaps we could consider ourselves to be free.

I still think we are missing two larger more important questions:

    Do videogames trigger violence?

If so, is it reasonable to limit their sale?

Of course my view is that the negative contribution of videogames to a players behavior is dwarfed by other outside influences such as the condition of the family, which I think is the single most important contributer to a persons behavior next to their biological chemistry.

I know plenty of people that don't get the least bit angry while playing a violent video game, but for me, I can't start up an online game without falling into a rage. Hell, even Tetris pisses me off.

Unfortunately, we live in a cutthroat capitalist society which teaches us that our value lies within our ability to succeed at any task given to us. Can't preform to some expected level at your job? Good luck finding a new one. The disposable nature of our society is beyond reproach. Can someone tell me how anyone can find security in a country where you can be expected to work 80-100 hour weeks, and where failure to preform to these standards will result in your inevitable replacement?

The combination of competition, profound individualism, unrealistic expectations, and our lack of personal value leads to fear. One of our natural reactions to fear is anger. Anger, of course, correlates well with violence. Is it any wonder why America has such a dissproportionate amount of violent crimes when compared to other industrialized nations.

The only solution is for our country to place limits on what is expected and to strengthen the value of the community.

There was an article in Newsweek on this topic. Part of their argument was that men and women develop natural linguistic and mathematic skills differently. Women are more likely to develop linguistic skills early on, and therefore are more likely to enjoy humanities. Men, on the other hand, develop mathematical skills earlier on, and are more likely to enjoy fields that are heavily dependant upon math. So the article thinks that one of the problems is that our schools assume that both men and women are equal and teach them both math and science at the same time. The article suggests that its in the best interest to place both girls and boys in separate classes and teach them differently. Interesting idea, i think.
