Well, there goes even more of Opera's meager market share. Still, I can't wait to get home from work and give it a spin, though I highly doubt it'll replace Opera for me.
First Post?
Having followed the Japanese sales charts for the last 7-8 months(via http://www.m-create.com/jpn/s_ranking.html - tracking units sold, not units shipped), Nintendo has Absolutely Dominated the charts. Outside of maybe 2-3 titles, no Sony or XBox system game has sat in the top ten beyond its initial launch week, and only getting that far if its a highly anticipated title such as a Final Fantasy or Gundam or one of the number of non-USfootball/basketball sports titles that they seem to enjoy. By and large this has been thanks to the DS, with Wii getting in on the action now too. for fun, here's the system sales for 1/29-2/4:
DSL 146,073
Wii 65,740
PSP 31,216
PS3 18,727
PS2 17,540
Xbox360 6,130
GBM 1,050
GBASP 724
GC 306
DS 119
GBA 28
Clearly Sony's better off than MS and the DS Lite eats everything, but we all knew that already. Worth noting though is that the Wii sold almost as much as all three Sony platforms combined, and the week prior it sold slightly more, with limited availablity seeming to be the only thing keeping it even close.
On the software side, the only PS3 title on the list is Enchanted Arms @ 47th
Parent is spot on with PS2's gigantic library - Metacritic lists 1400 PS2 games, 497 of which garnered an average review of 75% or better, and throw in another 252 PS1 games, 112 of which rank at 75% or better. I myself have at least 40 PS2 games, and there's still more I've yet to pick up. Combined with the slim PS2's low price tag and you've got a console with at least 4-5 good years left on it, even if most titles shift to the new consoles.
That being said, I've picked up 20+ DS titles since importing my DS Lite in April, I'm impatiently waiting to expand my Wii library as the hits slowly roll out, and I'm getting at least as much enjoyment out of the VC(both old favorites and games I missed growing up) as proper Wii titles. I started out looking firmly at the PS3, but have fully committed to the Nintendo camp, with a PS3 remaining a future purchase only to round out the household console lineup(as the roomie already has a 360).
An excellent point certainly, but also keep in mind that even though you can move the data with little to no effort, most anything released by big media and dropping down onto those consoles is going to be DRM'd and in its own proprietary format. HD sizes also come into play with downloads, and unless you have a networked system to offload your movies to(which will confuse the hell out of the masses), you won't have much room for downloaded movies(except for the Wii, with Nintendo's smart move to let you decide how much storage you have) and will have to pay for some sort of subscription service to have access to them at any time, or be forced to re-buy Old Hollywood Trash you had to delete to make room for New Hollywood Trash if you decide you liked Old Hollywood Trash better.
Which is fine and dandy until you look a bit closer and see that the Opera installer(3.59MB) clocks in at under a third the size of the Mozilla suite(11MB), and is even smaller than Firefox's installer(4.60MB). With a feature set that natively includes the following in such a tiny, slick, and responsive package, I'll take Opera any day:
the best tabs implementation anywhere(including the ever-useful Undo Close), with smart interactions, quick cycling, and readily handling 40+ tabs at a time
a fully customizable user interface that hides whatever you don't want to see or aren't using
SSR/ERA, fantastic design tool
SVG support
RSS/Atom reader
M2 mail client
IRC client
natural, responsive mouse gestures
Opera Slideshow and FF/Rewind implementation
Panels - Including Links, Transfers, Notes, Windows, Info, and the ability to add your own
F12's Quick Preferences
optional Voice module for voice-command browsing and text-to-speech on web pages
easy-to-use Wand tool
robust right-click menus(including text translations and url-hopping)
many keyboard shortcuts
Spatial navigation
User Stylesheets and User JavaScripts
tons of text encodings supported
And more!
With Gmail fully supported, and my bank letting Opera 8 in(after having refused betas access), the only reasons I need to go into Firefox now are site testing and Flashgotting.
"If you want to end "Republican Bashing", start by telling Republicans who get bashed that we can record things, and we can play them back. Lying will get people nowhere today."
Shhhhh, they might hear you and pass the INDUCE act or similar, taking all our 'dangerous' recording toys away.
Interesting map there with the imdb. I've been referring people to looking at the official US site for [official dates and locations, as there's a number of places it will be airing beginning after the 17th.
For the Europeans on here, so far as I know, it's only been picked up by France thus far, United International Pictures has it and will be releasing on/about Dec 1st 2004.
That all being said, I've got my ticket for the 2:30pm show, four and a half hours from now, it's gonna be fantastic.
Even though I'm only using it for a throwaway address, it's nice to see that I have gotten the bump up to 250mb like they were talking about. Then again, I seem to recall them mentioning them going through an upgrading a chunk of people at a time, and as I've had my address since August of 97/98(pre-MS) I'd venture a guess that perhaps they're upgrading by creation date.
Figure this is as good a post as any to resond to...
Stand Alone Complex is the third Ghose in the Shell universe, separate from both the Manga and Movie, and closer to the former than the latter. As another person pointed, there are 26 eps in the first season, and 26 in the second(called SAC 2nd GIG) - 12 of which have aired. If you're able to check it out, new episodes are aired the first Saturday of every month on PPV, SkyperfecTV. Even though Bandai tried putting a halt to the fansubbing around ep. 23 of season one, they are slowly continuing to come out, having gotten so far as episode 9 of 2nd GIG.
As another poster noted, the R1 DVDs start coming July 27th, with one DVD every two months. You can take a look at the EVEN WORSE site for the show at www.ghostintheshell.tv. There's a meager spread of offerings on there including some video clips where you can hear some of the dubbing. I think it's better than the movie's dub, but that's not saying a whole lot, I'll personally be sticking with the subs. Why the hell can't such a fantastic series as this get an american site on par with the wonderful Japanese site - www.kokaku-s.com I'm mean that's Flash too, but at least it's interesting and functional.
All said, it's a fantastic series in all regards, plot, visuals, and music(composed by Yoko Kanno, of Bebop/Macross fame). That's not just my Shirow fanatacism speaking, it's really an excellent series. While it's definitely heavy on the dialog, there's a heck of a lot of action in the series in mecha not of the giant robot variety.
As to Innocence, I've been keeping myself mostly in the dark about it, hoping that it will come to Minneapolis, but I've now bee following it much more than looking for that information.
Looking at the release notes on the Mozilla side of the browers, I see they've added support for CSS opacity, very cool. Not something I'd incorporate into the core design of my pages yet, but I might toss it in as a bonus to Moz users.
It looks like they've added Minneapolis(among other places) to the list of cities where it'll be playing! Originally it wasn't a listed city and I was thus quite saddened, living in Minneapolis as I do. Now it's a real possibility and one I plan to take fullest advantage of. Maybe I'll even bring my 12" Godzilla figure, going strong since 1985, along to the show.
Nothing quite like seeing Godzilla up on the big screen, gives a great sense of scale compared to seeing him on puny televisions.
This whole thing with insecure voting machines is troubling, particularly with some more specific information about Diebold from David Pouge's weekly Circuits column(free subscription needed). Of specific concern are these paragraphs from the article:
Wrong Thing 1: Wally O'Dell, the company's chief executive, is a Republican fundraiser. He writes letters to wealthy Bush contributors vowing to "deliver" his state's electoral votes to the Bush campaign. He hosts campaign meetings at his house. He's also a member of Bush's "Rangers and Pioneers" club (each member of whom must contribute at least $100,000 to the 2004 re-election campaign).
And-
Wrong Thing 4: Diebold points out that the software is inspected and tested by election officials before it's certified. There's only one problem: Diebold engineers can slip in and make changes to the software even AFTER it's been certified.
Worse, they do exactly that. A Wired article quoted a Diebold engineer as saying that his team made no fewer than three rounds of software changes to the machines in Georgia's 2002 election for governor--after the machines had been certified but before the election began. (That election "ended in a major upset that defied all polls and put a Republican in the governor's seat for the first time in more than 130 years.")
Now I know the Times isn't necessarily the best news source, but the contributions portion of this appears to be legitimate, and I don't like the implications inherit in that. Letting them manipulate their machines after certification and without re-certification is also certainly a Bad Thing. In any event, it looks like I'll be demanding a paper-trail of my voting from here on out.
that you're following the Teletubbies plan of learning.
Show the same information the same way twice in once (half-?)hour long block, albeit at a slower speed, for better comprehension of the information. Maybe this means the Teletubby babies really will become smarter than non-Teletubby babies as they get older, or at least have a better aptitude for learning.
My first post to/. and I just had to reference Teletubbies, gah:/

They're gonna need a pretty big island to fit them all, might I suggest Antarctica? Might even have some room for the lawyers.

They sure did figure out how to recreate it, only you might not want to watch for it in the sky

....and not a single reference to Darren Arnofsky's Pi? For shame Slashdot, for shame.

If you can get 5 girlfriends, I'll gladly trade you 5 GMail accounts for them =)
