The vintage Predicta tube TV was mass produced, and for picture quality it was superceded long ago. And what makes you so sure that a well done casemod can't be a "work of electronic art?" Many geeks can't seem to appreciate how idiosyncratic their standards for art and beauty are. Of course, I suppose that's what makes a person a 'geek.'
There's also the power of redundancy at issue here. Remember that you could buy 1000 linux boxes for a fraction of the price of short-term maintainance of a z/390, and virtualizing the hardware would multiply that number again- Result: disposable systems. Paper towels are indeed less reliable than rags, do you keep rags around the office? Also, somewhat off topic, but certainly related: I have heard that VMS was the only system software that had certified "5 nines" reliability. True?
I like you're air power theory, its kind of funny. I always imagined that Sauron has some sort of anti-flying magic defences! Tolkein might have had some familiarity with air power from WWI, and may have been less than impressed! Since WWII, airpower is now considered an integral part of military strategy, and its hard to imagine a military campaign without it
Obviously a case for the Pink Panther! Seriously... I've seen some comments about how "out of touch" U2 is... but I think they leave as much of the promo crap to the suits in the marketing department as they possibly can. I beleive the label is mainly responsible for deciding when to release the cd. The boy in the band may be as puzzled about this ploy as./ readers, and they may care even less.
I think people were just more isolated, and ignorent of the legions of assholes out there. The 50's were also full of paranoia, too. Politicians like McCarthy fueled fears that Communists were plotting on every streetcorner to hijack America from within. It is only another extreme, that some remember, that the world was full of nice, polite people that would be friendly if only you could communicate with them! If the public had cell phones in the 50's they would run into the same attitudes.
It will never happen because Big Oil and he fossil fuel industry won't let it happen. Follow the Money! You'll find that "saftey nazi's" have very little money or power. ON the other hand- an effective sattelite-to-ground weapon would find funding immediately. In fact, the Pentagon may be secretly working on it already.
How can tech savy nerds be so stubbornly simplistic when it comes to economics? The internet certainly wasn't a private venture for many years (not profitable). The technology behind all computers was developed and heavily subsidized by the government. There is next to know chance that any private company is going to develop this technology. Even if it were possible I think the powers that control expensive, polluting power would ever let it happen.
May 17, 2004 UserLand Software, Inc., the venerable weblogging and web content management company, today announced the execution of a transaction whereby certain of its assets and operations were acquired by a new corporate entity. The new company, UserLand Corporation, acquired the assets and operations of UserLand Software related to the products Manila and Radio UserLand, plus the "UserLand" brand name and website. The new company will operate under the name "UserLand Software".
I went through that phase myself- I was excited about converting my car to natural gas- It's pretty easy. I found that Time taken up by such hobbies makes it much more expensive than it seems at first. Hiring contracters to do "special" projects is amazingly expensive. then girls usually aren't to thrilled with what is essentially an "antisocial" activity. Many of the 60's kids learned about trying to live "alternative lifestyles." You see neighbors, friends and family cheerfully polluting with shiny new SUVs, and you finally figure "what's the point of me busting my ass?"
MS is probably just looking for sweeter deals from Intel. The unholy Wintel alliance has been too good for MS to abandon. Perhaps this would be good for whoever writes PowerPC emulators for IA64, but I think Intel will do whatever it takes to keep the desktop market.
The important number for me would be units sold. The revenue increase could be that hardware companies are getting more money for linux pre-installed. The "traditional" method has been to install distros after the hardware has been bought (perhaps with no OS?)
I was a little confused about the statistics in the article. Does this mean companies are just getting better at getting money for linux? How does this compare to the number of servers without linux sold? Any estimates of servers with other operating systems sold? I'm afraid there's just not enough context for the news to be meaningful.
The August issue of IEEE Spectrum mentions a proposal by the International Electrotechnical Commission to introduce new prefixes for words that indicate powers-of-two (page 18 of the print issue). This would replace kilobytes (kB) with kibibytes (KiB), megabytes (MB) with mebibytes (MiB)

...unfortunately my contract requires that I don't divulge this kind of information! -1 Lame Joke

You're fairly new here, aren't you? On /. we make beowulf clusters with old jokes.
I know its hard to tell, even for people famaliar with rbash; but this is what passes for humor among unix geeks.

I count myself among oversensitive geeks btw. Live chicken heads, mmmmmm!

How do you know this isn't already in place? I sometimes wonder where the millions for Reagan's (then Bush's) "Star Wars" went...

Rumsfeld and his goons are probably all over this development, however. Free software is such an obvious cover for Communism, after all.
In Finland It's not the snow, it's the dark, cloudy, dreary, FREEZING COLD that gets to you! Linus didn't always live in the Valley, you know!

Whose side do you think Microsoft is on? The consumer's? Internet Explorer safegaurds web surfers the way the nicotene in cigarettes enhances flavor.
