Allow me to return your bullshit call. emerge only updates dependencies if you specify the --update/-u option. And yes, you can update a program without that option. In that case, it will just update the specified program, period. There. No dependencies pulled, that is unless there's something new in the dependencies that needs to be added or updated.
Just wondering, all those people who got their accounts closed, do they just lose all their characters or lose their full rights to play the game? Since it's an MMORPG, losing online rights would basically make you lose everything you bought (with your real money, that is). I hope Blizzard won't make any mistakes...
I honestly don't see why they're talking about taking on the iPod Shuffle. Their new player has a screen, no built-in battery, and is twice the cost of a Shuffle of the same capacity. In short, it's the complete opposite of the Shuffle, ie. it's like all other flash-based players out there.
That sounds cool and all, and I can't wait to play with it, however I'm wondering about how free (as in both beer and freedom) their SDK will be. I hope they won't be charging some insane price for it. Open source would be nice too, but I'm not holding my breath. At the very least, I hope they'll publicly release enough specs to communicate with the PPU outside of their SDK (and targeted systems).
The Celsius scale was built around the chemical change changes of water. The Fahrenheit scale was built around... er... Wikipedia says it's horse blood. Face it, that's just stupid, at least in a scientific context.
That's hardly surprising. Nowadays whenever something big comes out, some fucker buys all units he can find so he can immediately resell them back at a much higher price on eBay.
My theory on duplicate articles: the slashdot admins think slashdot is so uninteresting because of all the dupes that they don't bother reading it. So they end up posting dupes, and the cycle continues. It's a catch-22, folks.
Apple's business model revolves around the idea that you have to buy their hardware in order to use their software.
(And in the case of iTunes, they actually allow people to use their software on non-Apple hardware, but don't be fooled, that's because they're trying to sell you some other hardware, in this case the iPod)
Check again, it's fine now. The Linux kernel has had open drivers for nvidia ethernet, AGP, IDE and sound for quite a while now. The only thing lacking open drivers is Soundstorm (the fancy sound hardware on some but not all nforce2 boards), but it's dead anyway, and at worst you can run it in ac97 mode with the intel8x0 drivers from ALSA. Or just do like me and get a Creative emu10k1-compatible card (hands down the best open Linux drivers).
"Some people throw their time in the trash as if it wasn't worth enough." ...says a guy who reads slashdot.
...a daemon for juice.

"i take it I'm not the only one who thinks the ipod's scroll wheel interface was designed by watching women masturbate?"
That's hardly similar when compared to the IBM Trackpoint...
Your point being? They could sell/give non-commercial licenses for their dev kits.
It already has "kickass 3d shooter games". What it really needs now is "kickass SOMETHING ELSE THAN 3d shooter games". Seriously.

the /. headline is misleading. It's a LAN solution, not a broadband Internet service. The word "service" should not appear in the title.
IIRC they accused IBM of modifying Deep Blue's programming between matches.
Spirited Away did well only after winning an Oscar.

The Apple Cinema Display HD actually has a higher resolution than this...
Careful there, x86 != anything...
Konqueror was affected by this too. Used to work fine a few days ago.

Actually, the current Presentation module in OOo is already called Impress. That is except in Ximian's version, which removed all fancy names.

You seem to be confused with Sun.
Why? Because a game is old, it becomes less good or something?
Think about it... Could you resist the temptation to name a product "Mini Skirt"?
Yes.
Could anyone explain to me what the fuck is the purpose of the "skirt"? Raise your Mac Mini a centimeter higher?? For 20 bucks?! Christ.
