At the risk of sounding vaguely troll-like, I'd like to point out that not having VT on your VT-capable CPU is in no way equivalent to a turbo car not having a working turbo. Poster has never driven a turbo car without a turbo and has picked a weird analogy out of thin air, which is generally a bad idea on Slashdot because people like me read it.
A better equivalent would be a dual core processor having a core disabled. THAT's the sort of performance hit you'd notice.
What a strange and useless thing to say, that AM2 has been 'dismissed'.
Perhaps one could say this if the platform was somewhat more mature?
As it is, this is still a pretty new platform, with a lot of people still on Socket 939. S939 also has a good choice of CPU's available and I personally haven't found any major bottleneck with not having DDR2 memory.
I still have an upgrade path to a Dual Core CPU that runs several hundred megahurtz faster.
Why exactly would I want to buy a new motherboard?
There's nothing wrong with AM2, it's just that people who already have a S939 system don't yet have a good enough reason to upgrade. People buying new would probably consider it, but then Intel Core 2 is here and its fast.
So I stand by my comment that saying "What went wrong for AM2" is a redundant thing to say. The answer is, "nothing".
Nice quote from Stuart Graham there, complaining about all the extra work he now (alledgedly) has.
I replied to him on that site. If he's not running a decent group policy to stop non-admin users from installing any old crap on their machines, he deserves all the extra work he gets. If he's any kind of enterprise sysadmin, he wouldn't even bat an eyelid at this piece of software.
ipod to use voice because a visual interface doesn't work properly in eyes-busy situations?
Begging my pardon, but in an eyes-busy situation, you probably are going to be concentrating too much on something to properly hear the voice prompts, or you're attention is going to suddenly split between current task and ipod, giving a moment of zero concentration.
Of course I'm sure it'll be just fine if the eyes-busy situation in question is the cute girls' butt who is jogging in front of you...
Why is it a problem to video record, audio record, or take pictures of things, such as a cop at your house, when you yourself are witness to the scene and are 'recording' it with your own eyes and ears?
Is it simply a case of having distributable evidence? Gonna be a real shit if we eventually progress to sense-recording implants isn't it?
In my opinion it's quite strange how much interest the Pirate Bay generates...
As a techie, I'm all for peer-to-peer sharing earning itself a 'good' reputation, and not being seen as pure evil, in any context, by the mass media, hollywood, recording industries, next door neighbours etc.
So I'm happy when legitimate uses for P2P (e.g. Sky by Broadband) are introduced.
But absolutely bewildered why a torrent site blatantly for downloading copyrighted works for free gets SO MUCH ATTENTION.
"Seems to me just another way to track the average citizen and not those wishing to avoid authorities"
Oh, GIVE IT UP already. Have you actually sat down and spent some time thinking what is actually to gain by tracking AVERAGE CITIZENS?
NOTHING.
Are you -that- bored with your life that you need to wave your little warning flag in the air everytime "The Government" come along with some new scheme and try and shoot it down as antisocial?
Firefox 1.5 has introduced new problems that didn't exist in previous versions. Try this: Install Firefox 1.5. Now, add extensions Adblock and Tabbrowser Extensions.
Notice now how sites like Jalopnik and Kotaku no longer have headlines. The javascript flash detecter finds flash, but then its oddly blocked by the browser, despite not having a block set. SIFR dies on its arse.
Also note how you can no longer download anything from a javascript-launched link, like anything from Fileshack. Tabbrowser Extensions mysteriously breaks these links from working. I toggled every likely setting that would cause this, and nothing fixed it. Since then, an update to Tabbrowser has come out, but the problem still exists.
These problems, with adblock and tabbrowser, did not exist with 1.0.7, but now I have upgraded and have to farm off certain sites to IE to read.
I signed up for an initial batch of 5 messages. I did of course immediately write two fairly sexual messages to girls I know, seeing as its anonymous. Great fun.
Anyway, nothing comes across as a text message. Rather, the phone will display the received item as a Service Command message. Clicking 'open' automatically starts the WAP on the phone, which connects to the StealthText server and displays the message. Standard operator charge applies however, so it's probably something that people are going to complain about when they notice that tiny increment on their bills.
But still.. anonymous text messaging. I've got three left and then I'll unsubscribe, it's far too pricey for what it is. But at least I get to tell the boss what I thought of his new shirt without him knowing it was me:)
The Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) is unhappy that the document was changed and claims that even though it was on the panel discussing the document, it was not made aware of Microsoft's changes
I may just be being cynical here, but if the FSFE were on the panel, and didn't notice that the document had references to "free software" removed, it strikes me that a) they weren't doing a very good job, b) the free software mentions weren't important enough to be noticed anyway.
Why do companies feel like it's right to mave stuff like this that's actually MORE trouble to make incompatible with non-MS/Mac systems?
Seriously. I just do not get this mindset.
You're an idiot. Go get the figures for desktop operating system market share.
Done that?
Apply half a brainpower to the figures you now have.
Windows is the majority. They made a player solution that the masses will use to watch the 9 minutes.
If you really can't accept than your OS isn't "compatible", then do us all a favour - buy a VMWare licence and stop whining. YOU chose to use Mr Free OS, YOU chose to ignore the 'standard', YOU chose to not watch this preview.
Why are you modding up people who simply hit "Reply" as soon as they see the first few words in the article text without reading the article ?
Every single comment with "what happens if the power goes out / i press stop because I have to find another beer" should be put to that special rating of -RTFA.
The Toms Hardware review is particularly disappointing.
1) They benchmark X850's against 7800's. Well that's fine, but they are a newer generation. Why not compare them against 2 x 6800 Ultra's ? 2) They don't include single card scores so you can't tell just what sort of increase you are actually getting. 3) The 3Dmark 'image quality' example pictures are a joke - they take a frame from 3Dmark from ATI and then from Nvidia, but they are different frames. You can specify which frame you want in the app, why didn't they take the same frame? Would have made for much easier a comparison. Sigh.
I assume if two people, organisations or companies directly compete to make a device, then patent law applies and the first person to have patented the device wins.
But what happens if two people design something similar with no knowledge of the others progress and a patent is filed by one before the other?
Does the slow company then have to pay royalties / cease production because of this, despite having no knowledge that someone else was working on the same thing?
I think any argument that DDOS'ing a spammer is made completely moot by looking at the example the Government has set with its regards to launching military attacks on other countries.
DDOS away. It's not like we'll be killing children, is it:)
Ahh, makes me proud to be working for Fujitsu despite a) not being involved in this project in any way, b) prolly not going to be involved in anything hi-tech like this anyway.

But still
Because it's the American Way. It ALWAYS ALWAYS ends up going this way because there's a chance for $$$

So Dell have a smaller profit margin that Apple. Great, but then Dell aren't propped up by Microsoft.
I can't see the URL from the headline, but the PDF works fine ...
"Unfortunately, user not savvy enough to install an open source windows emulator so this isn't an issue."

what? a DRM proprietary video streaming method and you're creaming your pants over it?
you goddamn hypocrite.

What's the question being asked ? There's no point to this headline. Useless.

Oh, stop your whining and buy a TFT, you CRT-loving dinosaur!
You've only just noticed how offtopic slashdot front-page headlines can be ??
Can someone answer this question I have?
