I've thought about doing something similar but it seems to have it's flaws.
The best method I could come up with is this. Each machine had a temp folder where it stores all scanned images before they are moved to the user folders. The image files are moved based on file creation timestamp. The user swipes their id card and a program notes who the user is, what machine they swiped their card on. This data stays valid until another user swipes their card. This will allow all images created after the swip to move to their user folder.
Now there are a few problems with this. First, I would have to maintain a list of what temp folder goes to what machine.. Not a HUGE problem but it's something to consider. Second, if a user doesn't swip their ID then all images they have scanned will be moved to the previous user's folder. Besides forcing a user to rescan documents this could be a potential security risk allowing somebody else access to documents they may not normally have access to.
I believe I need a piece of hardward that can limit the scanning capability to users who properly identify themselves before they scan a document.
This is really a blind test on how much disposible income slashdotters really have because Taco is looking for some marketing research on his new slashdot products to compete with google.
I suggest you donate way way to much so Taco had very inaccurate figures and when Slashdot.com finally launches it will be sure to fail right away and uh.. ok I think this has gone to far..
Jose Avila: I'm broke! See how broke I am? I'm funny too! Can't you spare just a little change?
Lawyer: See! Right there, I told you so! If you allow Mr. Avila to continue using the FedEx trademark, customers will become confused, and may think they're donating money to the REAL FedEx corporation!
So, does that mean when he can't pay the legal fees to defend himself he will be forced to sell his furniture and get sued again?!?!
You still need to know how to write good comments but I find using doxygen is a great tool for generating useful documentation directly from comments in your code. If you haven't heard of it give it a shot.
hmmm didn't really consider the immature little bastard factor..
I was speaking strictly from a help me I have a problem with my PC factor..
However I think they would be able to track any destruction on each laptop and hold that person responcible so I doubt any the stuff above would really be an issue in this case.
public machines.. well that's a whole different story
You just described every admin's daily workload. Personally I think it'd be an easier job to repair stuff kids are using than most adults computer related problems.
Video out on the PSP would look hideous on a big screen. 480x272 is the resolution of the screen, while DVDs are 720x480. DVDs are already noticibially lower quality then true HD content on a 1280x720(720p) or 1920x1080(1080i/p) display.
Uh.. I could be wrong but isn't a normal TV signal 320x240? I don't think the resolution is the biggest deal it's more an issue of how well the source video is encoded. If the encode is done well I would assume playing a UMD on a larger TV wouldn't be so horrible.
With that said I don't own a PSP and really don't have a good reason to own one myself.
I totally agree! I miss Full throttle, Simon the Sorcerer, The Dig and games like that. Games are much better "cartoon style", because then it looks right.
Check out Psychonauts for the Xbox (and PC I'm told) . It's created by the guy who did Full Throttle and Grim Fandango. I describe it as Mario 64 meets Prince of Persia (sands of time) with an incrediable amount of time and effort put into the story, characters and puzzles. It's my pick for Game of the Year
Amen Brother! Games like Grim Fandango, Eco, and Killer 7 need to come more often.
Psychonauts for the Xbox just recently came out and it's by the guy who brought you Grim Fandango and Full Throttle. It has a very Tim Burtonish style to it's character design and I very highly recommend checking it out.
Why bother to backup movies/tv shows of discs you purchased?
Say you own 1,000 dvds and it costs 50cents a blank to backup. You're still wasting $500 to backup each disc not to mention the HUGE amount of wasted time. In the off chance you actually damage a disc beyond the ability to watch you can rebuy the movie.
If it's a TV series disc and you don't want to spend $80-100 for a complete copy of the season you already own to replace 1 defective disc then rent it and make a copy or bitch to the studio for a replacement. I'm sure for a small fee (if not free) and sending the original now defective disc to them they would gladly send a replacement.
The only problem I ever have with the show is I'm busy lusting after the new, female Starbuck, then she tilts her head and looks a certain way and all of a sudden she's transformed herself into Macaulay Culkin. I find that VERY disturbing.
Michael Jackson posts on slashdot!?! Wow!

Next to Da Vinci Code seems approrpriate, assuming SSpade's opinion is correct: "Spam Kings is bad fiction, created by a hack... It bears no resemblance to reality."
I'm about 50 pages away from finishing Da Vinci Code (and will finish it later tonight) but I'm just wondering why you considering it bad fiction created by a hack?

Reading about Srinivasa Ramanujan reminds me of a finding a solution for the following pattern. It's very very simplistic but took me quite some time to actually figure out. See my reply for the solution.
The basic idea is you can take any number and the end result will be 4.

I saw it on fark with a COOL tag several hours before it hit slashdot. If that doesn't convince you I don't know what will.
I stopped because I figure that finding a cure for cancer or developing new drugs is a lot more useful that finding aliens a decade sooner.

Derailment usually isn't a problem for bullet trains unless the rails themselves fail
"The train is equipped with a new air-brake system that deploys in the event of an earthquake or other emergency
That's all fine and dandy but how are they going to prevent derailment when Godzilla shows up?!
This is another amazing step in our God-granted dominion and stewardship of His Creation.
