  5. Re:Games are Fundamentally Software on The Fight for Original Games · · Score: 1

I think rather than one genre, good games have more of a cross genre mentality. Case in point - I made a post earlier about the excellent Katamari Damacy. Here is a game with the styling of Super Mokey Ball (hrm...) but without the "fall of the world" factor + the collection aspects of basically every 3D platformer. Plus, you cannot die. Plus, you only use 2 buttons during gameplay. It's fantastic...but hardly a genre.

Besides, I think your list is a little too modern. Mario could easily be thought of as Pitfall on 'roids. Tetris is just a puzzle game, Ultima Online is cool - but there were other other online roleplaying games a few years before it. DDR is a good example...but its just Simon with a different set of I/O.

I agree though, I hardly think we have run out of genre ideas... Too bad there is so much money involved in gaming. Wacky games probably never see the light of day for fear of a low ROI.

So this weekend I went out and picked up Katamari Damacy. Holy shit - this is, by far, the most fun game I have played in a long assed time. I enjoyed the experience more than Half Life 2! (okay, totally different games, but I'm talking fun factor). It reminded me of the first time I played Tetris.

It only costs $20 bucks. TWENTY DOLLARS!@! for this level of entertainment is amazing. The game takes ~5 hours to "beat" but who knows how long if you want to get everything.

If you don't own this title yet, do yourself a favor - don't bother renting (who does that anyway) and just buy it. Today.

Nope. At least in the US, the gov't owns it. You just get to live there. And pay lots of taxes. Although it doesn't happen very often, they could just take back your land if they wanted to build a road or what-have-you. Or, if you look at the "war on drugs" you will find that many properties are siezed because of infractions on the current prohibition laws. If you owned the land, as in, forever and ever, the gov't could not take it from you (regardless of what illegal actifities you were committing on your property).

Cost for the iPod: between $350 - $400
Cost for the songs: between $8800 - $9900

    Total: ~10K

There is no way that this product is intended for anyone but the mp3 leecher. Sure, you could rip the ~825 CDs it would take to fill this thing (and spend countless hours doing so), but more than likely, you just cram it full of stuff you got from the internet.

(And yes, I know it wouldn't hold 10000 songs - with decent mp3 encoding, the real number is probably closer to 5000...but even so, my point is valid.)

    Meh.

Male maturity can be measured in many different ways. Off color humor and/or fantasy thoughts about women is probably not the best place to start. All men make comments and all men fantasize. Period. Maturity (and this can be applied to most everything else) is the ability to differentiate between the fantastic and reality.

That said, I would agree that the guys who rushed out to buy "The Guy Game" or "Panty Raiders" are probably not the most mature guys in the world - but I bet there are a few gems in that rough.

I suscribe to PC Gamer. Each month I get a shiny new copy of thier fine publication, sit down in my living room, and read it. It's a nice alternative to the computer and I'm not confined to my desk.

The real bonus is that in about 2 years time the bindings will spell out P C G A M E R on a shelf in my basement. Now that's something an on-line review simply can't do.

Anyway, I just read a few sites, figure out who I agree with most of the time, and read them - looking for scores and *brief* summary's. If I want to read the review, then I will, most of the time I have a passing interest in a game and want to know if it's thought to be "good" or "bad" by people that I agree with.

Many art house films are more honest than that. They can leave the viewer feeling a bit...queasy. Maybe the audience will question things a little more. They might *think*.

However, the true majority of that religion are the sheep. The ones that show up every Sunday, sit in church for an hour and get thier golden ticket into heaven, and then leave and do whatever they want, irrespective of thier "beliefs".

You will undoubtably see the worst this weekend - you know, the holiday believers and thier annual/bi-annual appearance.

I'm not saying that it doesn't hurt the industry - it certainly does, but not to the levels that they would lead you to believe. It's all very subjective. The new hotness is the Steam type of distribution. Small company X makes a game and sells it themselves - with no publisher. Funding from....hmm, not sure of that for start-up game companies. There is no reason you couldn't list it on Amazon, gogamer, whatever site, just like a hard copy.
