with rumors of different "versions" of the Xbox 360 being released in the future, i'm hoping that they continue to be just different "packages", rather than actually fundamentally different. For example, if someone can only buy the $299 model, they can always buy those add-ons to give them the same functionality of the $399 model later.

my worry is if they release a HD-DVD capable model in the future... will those who bought the early generation xbox 360's be restricted in their game selection, or will there be some type of upgrade path available? or will Microsoft be strict and say that no games can use the HD-DVD functionaly, only movies?

    my favorite quote from TFA:

Jesse Sandler said he was one of the people pushing forward, using a folding chair he had brought with him to beat back people who tried to cut in front of him.

"I took my chair here and I threw it over my shoulder and I went, 'Bam,"' the 20-year-old said nonchalantly, his eyes glued to the screen of his new iBook, as he tapped away on the keyboard at a testing station.

"They were getting in front of me and I was there a lot earlier than them, so I thought that it was just," he said.

it's true though! look at how much pent up demand there is for Mac OS X once it is affordable!! (Apple, are you listening??? Let people run OS X on their own hardware!) i'm guessing that a town selling 4 year old dell laptops would not cause quite as much of a ruckus. ;-)

to be honest i've never been a fan of the 3d zelda games either... in my book, Zelda64 would not be the greatest game of all time, and it certainly wouldn't be ahead of A Link to the Past... but i mean, obviously a heck of a lot of people disagree with that, so certainly the market demands the games be 3d.

*sigh* oh for the days of beating gannon with a bug net. ;-)

why did he get marked troll??? just curious, because i don't understand the choice of mod points. he stated a fact, and what i'm sure is a very common opinion.

also curious, what does this leave for gamecube owners to be excited about this holiday season? gameboy micro (which i think just further confuses the market for parents... not sure why nintendo is going in this direction)?? surely missing out on their blockbuster title during the most important season is going to continue to damage their mindshare. it's unfortunate, but i'm among the growing number of people who see Nintendo as making mistake after mistake after mistake...

let's hope they can find some measure of success despite all these problems.

Hey you, Ferrari - why aren't you selling as many cars as Toyota? Slackers!

oh the beloved car analogy, which still doesn't fit, nor has it ever fit. the standard response: all roads support just about any car. the same is not true for software: not all software supports every computer.

and so, the point of this response is this: apple DOES need to improve it's marketshare if it wishes to move out of its niche market. which i'm certain apple's investors would be happy about.

i think the incessant droning of all of us /.ers about getting Mac OS X on our own hardware is because we agree with you: we see the enthusiasm that Apple puts forth, and we want to be a part of it. We just can't afford the commodity hardware.

the mood of the comments here is obviously on the side of Rockstar, and I tend to agree with some of them, as I do value freedom to choose what games I can play.

however, I believe it would be a nice gesture of goodwill for Rockstar to do something along the lines of the one demand, "Create a fund for victims of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and car-jackings, etc". they could give something beneficial to those affected by such tragedy, instead of simply glorifying the perpetrators through their games.

    I don't think it's gonna happen though.

i thought this whole scenario was basically already played out in Mac OS X... i mean, not exactly with all the details of TFA, but relatively closely. A big company took an open source product, kinda created their own fork, gives a bit back to the community, and the geeks embrace it. many would call it "the world's best operating system" already.

I know this makes it hard for joe luser to pick a distro to run an enterprise on, but, like any major software purchasing/deployment scenerio, you need to have intelligent people making these decisions.

and it's exactly this elitist attitude that has prevented Linux from already eclipsing Windows on the desktop.

If you want to use Linux, hire someone who has a favorite distro and use that.

are you serious? So in order to use this free, open source OS, your grandmother should have to go hire somebody to make decisions for her, rather than being able to come to the decision on her own based on having only a few, solid choices, rather than dozens of half-hearted attempts?
