I wouldn't doubt it, I'd be suprised actually if that doesn't happen. But I still stand by what I said. At the time I wrote my comment the writer was sitting at +5 Insightful, which pissed me off considering how incredibly wrong he was... now that he's -1 Troll all is well again.
Yes sorry that's what I ment, it is only specific apps, but I don't see WHY these specific apps are being blocked. I have downloaded lots of stuff, but once in awhile (more recently now) I'm getting blocked for apps that it doesn't make sense. I get the movie thing since there's rights and such, but how to make a cocktail? Who cares who reads that in the world, especially considering it's free.
Considering I just tried downloading two free app's and was told I was not allowed to "purchase" the free app from the Canadian store, I'm sure Canada is excluded here too.
One was a drinks and cocktails recipe sorta thing and another equally as odd.. why the hell would an app like that get blocked? I KINDA get stuff like Pandora being blocked (same with Hulu and such on the web)... but how does free lowkey apps fit in?
Having a military base in another country doesn't mean they annexed the country, unless your saying that Japan and Germany are both really secretly controlled by the US government. Good friends, sure, but then you might as well say Britain runs Canada.
No army before WW2? What about WW1? This the same country that violently broke away from Britain and had a massive civil war?
... less Tampon ad's, count me IN. As long as their not tying into credit card or purchasing history it doesn't bother me. I don't really want to have to start clearing out my real life "cookies" everytime I finish a shopping trip.
I don't think it should be stopped, I even said I don't think it's going to kill us all. I find it interesting from a purely what-if standpoint. Like I said this was just my initial thought I had while reading it. In 50 Years we've gone from "zomg we might irradiate the entire earth" to "zomg swallow us in a blackhole".. in a 100 years I wonder what we'll be "zomg..." about. That's all I meant really.
My first thought from reading the summary is that essentially we're at a point in technology or whatever that we could, POSSIBLY, destroy the planet in a literal sense. That's a scary thought, especially if you think what we'll be capable in a hundred years from now.
I STILL don't think the LHC will kill us all but the fact we're debating it says something.
I agree with your sentiment, although how i got there is different. Considering the situation their in I'm willing to let some stuff like what you said slide. However I really don't care about that. I found the show incredibly depressing. Everytime they get a break, something as bad, if not worse, seems to happen, and there's no hope. I gave up part way through the second season. I won't miss the show, at all. And everything I'm hearing about the "spinoff" makes me glad I stopped watching.
Honestly I'd be happy with more pew pew lasers, less wah wah crying. Probably makes me shallow but oh well.
At my work, if a ticket comes in at a certain severity, it's my task to close the ticket, and reopen it at a lower severity. THEN start working on fixing the problem. This doesn't help me serve the clients, but it does help improve our metrics. In fact I don't think I've once heard anything about improving customer service where I work in the past year, it's all about doing more work remotely.
Probably because, for Microsoft, this doesn't happen all the time. I can't remember the last time Microsoft laid off 15, 10, or even 5 percent of their workforce.
I haven't had to do a Kernel patch in many MANY years. Even on my Server. Going by your "logic" I guess XP or Vista can't be any different then Windows 98 since that came out 10 years ago, too.
Hell I've installed Linux on several of my systems, my mom's system, laptops, rarely have I ran into a problem. Last major issue I had was installing Windows XP because it wouldn't recognize ANY of my SATA hard drives and I had no floppy disk.
Well one basic feature I am annoyed about is the ability to, oh I don't know, customize a screen saver in Ubuntu (not talking Kubuntu)? The number of posts I had to read up on how to do something like having it display pictures that I chose for the screensaver was laughable. The thing is from what I can tell this is a Gnome "Feature" to hide complexities.
PS - Yes I figured it out, yes I use Ubuntu and love it, but i'm not going to be installing it for friends or family until basic stuff like that is fixed.
I just had to respond since I've never met anyone else that's ever played Crescent Hawks Revenge... that was an amazing game, especially for it's time. Although a part of me actually wished it was more Turn Based style:p
The company is choosing to no longer support an outdated product. I'm quite confident if I put McAfee 1.0 in I wouldn't be able to get it to work, is that McAfee's fault? Why should the Moz team spend resources fixing an oudated, end of life product?
frankly if you want it fixed, grab the source and fork it. It's not up to the developer to go back and fix a product because another company (Google from what I understand) decided to stop supporting an outdated method. If ANYTHING this says something about relying on a 3rd party for a feature set.
DRM, by itself doesn`t bother me. DRM that gets in my way in some way does. PS3 games are actually region FREE, unlike other DVD based systems, so in that way it`s actually more open then say some competitors.
Now if the game locked itself to my console somehow then I`d be tell em to burn. Same thing with Steam, sure it has DRM, but doesn`t hurt me none so I don`t mind it.
It's worked on me... I buy games for my PS3 now, much greater chance of it working then on PC thanks to DRM. Great example is I lent a friend my copy of MGS4 since I don't have time to play it. Wouldn't work on PC's nearly as well. Since only one person is using it I don't see how it's pirating, either. When he's done i'll get it back and play it.
I think the PC is a superior environment to play on but I'm unwilling to buy into the DRM stuff. The only games I play on my PC now are MMO's and Civ4. When Civ5 comes out with a 3 install limit and a stick to beat yourself with for every impure thought I'll probably cry:'(. Then download the crack.
I agree with the password username thing but even if you forget both you can have them resend the info / new password as long as your still using that EMail address from 5 years back... and if not, call and they'll fix it. Sure it's not as easy as popping a disc in the drive, but then again if I lose the disc after 5 years I don't need to remember where it is. It's a trade off, and one I'm willing to make. Valve created a DRM that in some ways improves the game (especially once the Steam Cloud gets going) without bending over the customer. Such a case is few and far between.
I don't buy PC Games anymore simply because of DRM.
The problem with that is, right now although the Pirates are armed with RPG's and such they're not generally using them (not saying deaths haven't occured) Doing so would result in an arms race. Look at the roadside bombs on Afganistan.. we supply heavier armor to protect the troops, they build bigger bombs. Although I won't say your idea doesn't have merit, I've thought it myself, it must be looked at carefully before going down such a path.
I don't have any other games to add, but I just wanted to say thanks for the info on this, I'm always on the look out for good quality Linux games, Tux Racer only goes so far ya? I'll download Urban Terror tonight!:)
FFXI has a very good story I think, but it's not one you can easily fully understand. There's several story arcs, each around an expansion. The Zilart missions start off weak I think, and don't really start taking off until most people stop working on them, the ending is great. Chains of Promathia has an amazing storyline I think, probably the best in there, with some truely epic battles. The final battle is actually a cool combination of Zilart and Chains and requires you finishing both to see. Treasures of Aht Urghan is pretty good as well with some interesting tie in's to the original nation / starting areas, and Wings of the Goddess is so far quite interesting (haven't released all the missions for that yet) Being able to travel back in time to the Crystal War is quite cool.
I love FFXI but it's not for everyone, it's hard, and does have it's frustrating moments.. but if you get in with a good community it can be some of the most fun out there. Also you should know there isn't any (real) Player vs Player combat in the game, a deal breaker for some.
That argument probably woulda worked several months back, but not now. I was shocked that the level 30ish leveling area, Yhortanga Jungle or w/e it's called, was actually overcamped. For a game that's been out for what 5 years, to still have a lot of people leveling at that area I found rather suprising. They've made some amazing progress in the game recently, it'll never ever come close to WoW, but I think it's got a good hold on it's niche. Shame the North Am. market never really noticed the game.
Those were the days... I remember getting a long distance number to update the anti virus definitions:p granted when it could fit on a floppy downloading at 9600 wasn't so bad...
Figured MS would never go down this road again with all the anti trust stuff. I'd rather see them work with the companies to improve the performance, then making their own. Or if MS has ideas how to do it better they could always open source it, ala Chrome.
I wouldn't doubt it, I'd be suprised actually if that doesn't happen. But I still stand by what I said. At the time I wrote my comment the writer was sitting at +5 Insightful, which pissed me off considering how incredibly wrong he was... now that he's -1 Troll all is well again.

Now this looks interesting, however it appears we are too late. We've already lost the Earth once, back in Sept. Sad :( Mostly harmless indeed.

And nothing of value was lost... sorry had to say it, mod down as you will!

Damn you, now I'm going to have to fire both of those up and replay them! :p
