  2. It depends how you look at it on Can Anyone Beat WoW? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I think WoW was good for one thing. It got people who never heard of MMO's, or people who were afraid to try the more hardcore MMO's to "get their feet wet".

It's not necessarily something that future MMO's should draw from. Of course there will be WoW clones, but I think all of the companies will benefit from the success of WoW.

You'll see people start with WoW and find that they need more depth and challenge. Games like FFXI, Everquest, and the soon to come Vanguard will all benefit from the influx of gamers into the genre.

I don't think WoW will be "beaten". It will co-exist with all the other MMO's, and everyone will benefit from WoW's ability to attract the casual gamer.

  3. hmm on Game Developers Missing Their Target? · · Score: 1

  4. class based skill based on Classes vs. Skills in MMOGs · · Score: 1

The problem with the skill based system is it isn't easy to figure out how a person can benefit your party...you have to have a 5 min conversation to figure out what they actually *are* since you can't rely on any type of base class to determine their primary role.

In class based games if you need a healer, damage dealer, tank, or supporter, it's as easy as finding someone of that class.

Hitting up the used racks at EB makes a lot more sense to that crowd than shoehorning the wii's control system into games not initially designed for it
I think that crowd will pick up the cheap Wii remakes if the new controls positively add to the experience...and we have no reason to think they will just go around remaking any old cube game. I'm sure they will only pick ones that will be better for it. Especially if it is comparably priced to the used games.

Nothing stopping them from adding wifi support either. I'd definitely buy a wifi enabled, graphically overhauled, wii controller remake over the cube version in the used bin.

I thought Nintendo was supposed to be about innovation? Make NEW games around the interface, rather than rehashing the old stuff.
Why can't they do both? You honestly think they would sacrifice new ideas to remake cube games? I seriously doubt it.

When i'm in "MMORPG mode" (which lasts 3-6 months usually before burning out and taking a few months off), I don't buy nearly as many games. I buy games I would play while not being able to play the MMORPG i'm addicted to. I buy a lot of Nintendo DS/GBA games during these times.

I would like to think that the handheld market would not be affected by MMORPGs very much. Time consuming PC and console games take the worst beating I think.

Of course in my case I make up for it during my MMORPG downtime. I think during my last "break" I went out and bought 4 or 5 PS2 games that had come out in the past year that I had been interested in but knew I would not play at the time. A couple titles, God of War comes to mind, were already available for $20 new.

  24. Re:Personally on SiN Episodes - Emergence Review · · Score: 1

If Emergence has multiplayer then sure, it might be worth $20. They will add it later as you say, and by that time you've most likely paid more than a game that was completed and sold for $50. Congratulations. You're a victim of episodic content.

Trust me, companies aren't doing this for the consumer, they're doing it to make more money without you noticing as easily.

I think you misunderstood about the $5. If I am to buy a finished game, I will gladly pay $50 even if it falls shy of 50 hours of gameplay. What isn't worth my money, is paying $20 for a piece of the $50 game, only to be sold the rest of it over time for ultimately more money. So yes, $5 for an episode is about all I would pay since it's only a small fraction of the game. I'm not sure what kind of games you play, but most games i've purchased have anywhere from 15-100+ hours of content. Even 15 hours (God of War comes to mind) is worth $50 because I know it's a one time price for a finished game.

  25. the problem on Blu-Ray Should Have Been Optional on PS3? · · Score: 1

The problem is some people are under the impression that using blu-ray is going to somehow enhance their gaming. I guess if you want your game full of HD FMV then sure, but that's not really a good thing.

Developers have managed the same resolutions on the PC for a while now using DVD technology. Extra storage space gained from blu-ray discs is not really an issue.

Don't kid yourselves. Sony is making you buy the Blu-Ray simply because they think they can have a repeat of the PS2/DVD success. It isn't going to happen. They could of made a great video game system for a reasonable price. They chose not to, and we can just as easily choose not to buy it.
