While Shrek is not my favorite animated movie by far, I don't think you can say it will be wasted on an audience five years in the future. Shrek took the idea of fairy tale and composed a new frankenstein tale based on all the old ones. It was a traditional fairy tale in its simple moral, and in the way it wove contemporary culture into the story. In the end we can argue about how good it ended up being and how funny it was, but the kids that were in the audience with me loved it every bit as much as I loved reading fairy tales when I was younger. And they didn't even understand half the pop culture references.

In Monopoly you are in direct competition with the other players, in WoW it is usually cooperative. It is closer to a positive sum society so when you get that mega doom axe of strength +5, it generally doesn't mean someone loses out on it. There are other factors to take into account with WoW, such as, why is it for that another player should get to play more than me, but I can't spend money to catch up? There is no need to defend a bad analogy; I think most of us know that this sort of stuff ruins the game. People see it makes money, farmers come in and set up shop, next thing you know, you have to wait in line to kill the flaming dragon of deadly breath to get your mega doom axe of strength +5, the economy gets thrown way off, no one has fun, etc. I for one am a big fan of the idea that the developers make items that can be purchased with real money and have some sort of distinction that lets other players know it has been purchased out of game.

I play WoW pretty casually, compared to the people in my guild anyways. I can play for a few hours, not play for a day or so, and then play for a few hours again, and that way I stay in a constant rested state so that I am always gaining double xp and somewhat keeping up with my guildmates. I think the reward xp for being logged out is one of the features that keeps me playing the game. I don't have the time or desire to play this game 70 hours a week, and when Blizzard made WoW, they knew that. It's nice to have an MMORPG that doesn't only cater to the hardcore. "Quick Blast" indeed.

But I watched them playing and realized there was no time limit. I was kind of amazed. Bust-A-Move with no pressure, okay. I asked if I could play a round of it, I busted out my ruler, and then proceeded to blow their high scores out of the water. If you just use a ruler to make sure your pieces are all going exactly where you want them, the game is ridiculously easy.

Good job, Dave. You took an essential part of the game out and instead put in annoying faces.

Going through high-school English classes I was told repeatedly how I was to respond when it came time for essay exams. If you did not give the teacher what they wanted you were given a poor grade. It wasn't until college (and I remember our second semester English professor being appalled) that I was able to write how I felt about a topic and back it up with real information. The professor would grade you on your research and your proof and not how he/she particularly felt the topic should be supported.

How can we expect high-school aged kids to think that they should be given a chance to practice their First Amendment rights when they are under the constant force feeding of information?

If you had the chance to see the new Hal Hartley film, The Girl from Monday, I am sure you were laughing with me when one of the main characters was found guilty of a crime and sentenced to "two years hard labor teaching high school."

My apologies to all the high school teachers out there that are trying to make a difference, but what was most funny about this line was how well it reflected the level of quality of my high school teachers.

You like GTA III right? You shot up your fair share of aliens in Halo 2 didn't you? And you even managed to stealhily kill your way through Metal Gear Solid. But you feel upset about the way gamers are portrayed by the media that is marketing to them. It's understandable. You have this softer, smarter side that plays Katamari Damacy and Super Mario Bros. 3, and even reads Slashdot. Why doesn't Spike TV's awards show pander to this type of person? Well probably because there are so many people out there that only play these violent mainstream games, and who also completely eat this stuff up.

That conversation between the execs probably went something more like this:
Businessman A: "You'll see here on chart C that the largest group of our regular programming that could be considered 'gamers' occurs in this particular demographic shown here."

Businessman B: "I think the show could possibly draw a larger audience and generate more interest if we included some musical stars preferred by that demographic."

Businessman A: "Excellent idea. I'll look into that. Now, for endorsements, on chart D you will see that heavily caffinated beverages are a favorite among this demographic. This sort of thing fits in perfectly with Mountain Dew's current marketing campaign and I think we should talk to them abuot it."

Businessman B: "Excellent. Now I'm sorry, but I have to cut this meeting a bit short. My son has a baseball game tonight"

There has been way too much video game hype floating around this past year or more. I'm not complaining about the quality of games, or the marketing campaigns for games themselves, but rather this video game industry awareness campaign that tries to wow everyone into thinking video games are legitimate now (disregarding whether or not they have been a legitimate form of entertainment for some time now). Is this meant to get companies with big money interested in the video game industry, or am I supposed to buy more games now because I won't get picked on for being a geek since games are cool now?

Apparently this campaign is lost on all my friends because they still pick on me whenever I come home with a new game.

This review really sums up what's great about it. Although I don't think he put enough emphasis on how good the game is at making you feel like you're going FAST. When you hit the boost, the edge of the screen gets a blur effect that is less novelty, and more essential for giving the impression of ridiculous speeds. But um, front page? And this isn't affecting all servers either. I have never had to que up or get lagged out on the Dalaran server. Yes it's good to give Blizzard hell and light a fire under them so that they get more servers going, get the current ones stable, and allow people to move from high to low pop servers, but rescind your GotY award? That seems a brash and immature thing to do at this point. They put up with the rough release, and saw through the server problems to find a great game? Why take it back now when you've known this was going to take some time to get fully worked out. Especially when you have more and more people joining. I also think Blizzard should be applauded for not shipping new copies of the game until the servers are stabilized. If they are going to have to stabilize the servers before selling more copies, don't you think it's their number one priority too? Give them some time, start a alt on a better server, pick a Horde race, and enjoy the game.
