Let's face it: most of the folks who this will happen to will have no idea that AVG is out there, so it's up to people like us /. geeks to help educate them. Perhaps we should start replacing the AOL CDs at supermarket checkout stands with homebrew CDs cotaining better internet applications?

I've already got FOTR and TTT in theatrical and extended versions, and I'll double-dip for ROTK, too. I've a confirmed skeptic, but I just can't help but do this with A) How great the films are, B) How much of a risk New Line originally took to bankroll them (even if it's hard to see now), and C) They said, from the beginning, that there would be two versions of each film. I won't even comment about Lucas...

That's it, though. The only way I would buy them again is once they're out on HD-DVD, whatever that format may be.

The rumours of the A-10 being dead are kinda like the Mac...or BSD. But Chuck Horner, the US Air Commander in the (First) Gulf War, said it best:

Just how well did the A-10 do? Before the war, when informed that his son had decided to fly the Warthog, three-star General Chuck Horner reportedly said "Oh, I don't think I have a son anymore; I think he died from brain damage." During the Gulf War, as part of a routine briefing, General Horner said "I take back all the bad things I have ever said about the A-10. I love them! They're saving our asses!"

  18. As one who's actually worked with iris scanners... on Germany Begins Iris Scans at Frankfurt Airport · · Score: 5, Informative

I actually worked with Iridian back when they were called "Iriscan" a few years ago. The technology was pretty cool; unlike fingerprint or voiceprints, which can only verify someone's identity after they tell you (via a username, prox card, etc) who they are, an iris scan can actually identify a user based off of their iris pattern.

A typical fingerprint has about 10 points that can be uniquely identified, and on a thumbprint scanner you're lucky to get 5 or 6 of them reliably. The iris has roughly 26 unique points that can be picked up every time. Back when I was working with Iridian's stuff they used a low light video camera to basically take a picture of your eye...no funky lasers or anything like that. Additionally, and perhaps morbidly so, they had built technology to help identify if the eye was live or not, so not only could you not just hold up a picture of an eye, but you couldn't take someone else's eye (a la Demolition Man, I believe) and hold it up to the scanner.

Additionally, the iris pattern (and thumbprint or voiceprint in other applications) is never held as an actual pattern; it's just a hash based off of what comes off the scanner, so privacy was not much of a concern.

I think the point is not just for TVs, but for projectors. As projector and screen prices keep coming down, people are looking for ways to make the image look even better.

You can get a good Infocus X1 projector and a decent Stewart screen for right around $2,000 USD. This is around the same price as most large rear-projection HDTVs, and much much less than any plasma, LCD, or LCOS TV.

Plus, if you're willing to support the evil empire, you can get discs like Terminator 2. It has a version of the film in Windows Media format that's actually in high def.
