The proximity to the Ocean is the big thing. I lived in the Queen Charlotte Islands of Canada for several years, and the weather there is BETTER than in Vancouver most of the winter... simply because it's so far out in the pac.
It's about damned time! I've been griping about this since I was 17!
Now, where can I sign up for some dusty, cold, life-endangering manual labour on another planet?:-)
Seriously, getting off this rock is important to the survival of our species! If it means doing it for a mining corporation, so be it. Hell, Europeans came to The Americas looking for Gold....
However, limiting the document formats to the OpenOffice format is unnecessary, unfair and gives preferential treatment for specific vendor products, and prohibits others.
Oh please. Am I to understand that Open Office documents are blocked by things like patents, constantly changing specifications, no interoperability between versions, and licensing fees?
Oh, wait, that's MS Office! Open office standards are open? Free for all to use, if they choose?
Wow. Go figure.
All I know is I personally don't CARE what the format is, what's underneath, just friggin' well let it work with all damned Word processors!!!
RTF, HTML, XML, whatever. JUST MAKE IT WORK!!!

This was my comment. C'mon Slashdot! You're new damned verification thing is slow as molasses, and then appears to show me it's accepted, but really it's just posted as Anonymous!
This is no hype. In test after test, the combination of superior FPU and a shorter pipeline has resulted in better performance.
Of course, this is dependant on a per machine basis. If you buy a crappy video card (or worse, use on board) and not enough ram, and an old HDD, you're system will not be as fast.
But basically every review I ever read put AMD way ahead of the Pentium in similarly equipped hardware. The main reason is speculative execution... when a Pentium misses and has to step back, it's got roughly double the pipeline to go back on.
This is really just a laymans explanation, I'm sure you'll find a lot more with your favourite search tool.
I must have wasted several months of my life in that game.
It led to games like Civ, Civ2 and 3, but damn, I may just dust off my copy and play some MORE.
I dig it out every couple years and play... it's just as good as the old days. Too bad Moo2 and Moo3 sucked so damned badly. They never really lived up to the name with their complicated interfaces and questionable "improvements".
Damn, I can hear the missle bombardment coming in on my planet now....
In return of the Jedi, he uses his anger to defeat his father. Also, in the expanded universe books, he explores the dark side, when he is turned by a clone of the emperor.
Much later, the Yuzhun Vong invade the Galaxy, and a revelation about the force is underway. The Jedi have turned away from part of the force, and hence, are unable to even detect this terrible enemy.
Great book series. One can see the overlay of terrorism and radical fundamentalist religion throughout the undertones of the Vong series.
I just wish they'd make the TV shows based on that portion of the universe, with the new jedi order.
Put some manuals in with that, print them up in colour, make a snazzy box, put the logo's of all the major brands and slap a "A 500$ value!" (as compared to close source) on it, and you have yourself a winnner.
Hell, better yet, put a live CD like SLAX in there, and you'll be really rockin'!
The.torrents I watched were all sans commercials, and sure enough, I spread the word at work too. At least 4 or 5 guys watched this series on TV because of me.
I also patched the.torrents out through my TV when needed... Also for Boston Legal and Enterprise episodes that I missed. It's really the ulitmate "time-shifting" device.
I also don't see how it's really any different (in usages, if not practice) than borrowing someones VHS and watching a show you missed, then zipping through the commercials.
To hell with MPAA/RIAA and everyone else. I say it's time to SUE THEM.
It was my understanding that in the US -- Much like in Canada, the Health Care "system" is actually a hodge-podge of state-run systems, and that not all will offer the same subsidies nor the same costs.
In Ontario, there are many people being told they won't funded for live saving medicine. Here is more info
That being said, isn't that boy an Aboriginal Canadian? He should then be covered by the Federal Government ("Indian Affairs"), and then subject to a whole hacky-sack of MORE RESTRICTIVE regulation on medicine than the already deprived Canadian public have to deal with. Nevermind the fact that it's the deal the Crown gave Aboriginals for taking their country away and putting them on per-capita smaller reserves than in the US. More Info
I have a cousin in Arizona. He goes to the free clinic, cuz he can't afford the expensive Health Care. He gets good service and has never been turned away from anything.
It's not perfect, and I agree it's not the best situation. But in Canada there are people told they won't have their Cancer treated because they are Statistically not optimal candidates . So what do people like this do???
They go to well-known Cancer Treatment centers in the US, and pay thousands to have their LIVES SAVED.
Until you've been told you have Cancer, or worse, and then are told you need to wait 6-14 weeks for an MRI and then another 4-8 weeks for surgery... you have no idea how friggered up the Canadian Health Care system is.
Been there. Done that.
Now, as an aside, if your bro' in Phoenix was told to pay over $500 a month for wifes coverage, she probably had a pre-existing condition. I agree, that is garbage, cuz she was probably dropped by someone else. That's the problem that needs to be addressed in the US.
Keep in mind that many US states subsidize lower to middle income people in order that they can get on the medicare roles. Others, like Oregon Health Plan are state-sponsored health, and somewhat similar to those systems in Canada and other countries.
Now, getting back on point; Canada has no selective service, because it has no Army (none to speak of, anyway). How would they fund the processing of those potential recruits, when they can't even get a Gun Registry to work???
Now, my last question: WTF does all this have to do with the DMCA? Talk about wandering off the thread!!!!
From the article: "It is, for example, a breach of copyright laws to copy a music book, but it is not illegal to receive or use the copied book," said the party's legal affairs spokesman, Johan Linander. "It should be no more complicated than that in the digital arena," he added.
Hopefully, this sort of more sane attitude will prevail. How is this different than if he lent a copy of the DVD to a friend?
In many countries, it would be acceptable to view it, copy it, or parts, while it's in the borrowers possession.
This should be the case here. The whole world is surely watching this case! Use your heads Sweden!!!
Yes, they have, especially in light of how many people are clamoring to continue the Moz Suite as a viable business tool.
That being said, I suspect they've identified some serious new bugs in 1.01, such as "right click>save as(video)" that causes mpegs and wmv etc to become corrupt.
I can see that being a problem they'd rather not replicate.
Now I gotta roll back to ver. 1.0. doh.
Anyone else getting this bug?
That being said, sort of ironic, eh, that they do away with the Suite, which by it's very nature would ensure all aps are the same "version", but then go to seperate apps whereupon they immediately begin to merge their release/development schedule!!!!
This is why building a browser into the distro, rather than just using the "best of breed" or offering a couple options during install, it completely foolish to me.
I hate Konquerer, although it HAS gotten better. But I just hate having HTML rendered in my file browser.
Damnit, why does the Linux community have to copy every crappy assed idea of Microsofts?
I miss the days when KDE ran FAST and didn't have a lot of "prettiness". Instead of the community focusing on building a Counterstrike Killer, instead it's all about anti-aliased fonts (fine, they are nice, but is it that big deal?), bloated User Interfaces and a billion different distros.
Did I mention I hate Konquerer?
Begin modding me down. I'm used to it. (opinions on slashdot that don't fawn over the subject usually get modded down as trolls.)
Ok, just read this http://www.davekopel.com/Terror/Fiftysix-Deceits-i n-Fahrenheit-911.htm and then decide.
IMO, Moore is a propagandist, expert at combining small clips with negative imagery to make a point, and to pander to his market. More a Goebbels than Journalist.
Now, in the old days, you bought a record, and put it on your record player, and you played it. No problems, and consumers had nothing to do with copyright, because they never copied music.
Uhh... hello? I copied music all the time, as did my friends. We'd make mixed tapes from our albums, cassettes, and even from radio.
The RIAA fought cassettes under the same idea, and lost. They fought VHS and lost.
For the life of me, I don't understand the difference, except in tecnology.
I too have been enjoying this season, when I actually catch them. They moved it two times in my area. Great way to kill a show, don't leave it in a normal time slot. Put it on when everyone is going out on Friday Night. Sheesh.
Are they not aware it's the 18-34 male demographic that is going out drinking at that time???
I hated Bakula, and really didn't want to watch it when it came on, and all I could think of when I heard the music was the rumours about Stewart having his stomach pumped back when I was a kid. (eeeew).
That being said, if anyone noticed the sped up the music this year... and Bakula torturing people to save earth was way cool. I loved seeing the dismantling of his personality as a "together" Captain. But then, they did sort of cast him as a rebel, and he just doesn't strike me as the type.
I keep expecting that idiot with the cigar to pop in and say "ok, now you've saved the federation, but you've got to go back to 1868 and be a suffraget now... "
I hope it stays, or maybe a new show. Maybe a new Star Wars series would be better. I dunno.
You most certainly CAN remove IE from ANY version of MS Windows, manually, or with a program like LITEPC -- http://www.litepc.com/ Now, there may be some removed/limited functionality, especially in programs that rely on the BS windows built-in rendering technology.
I've often wondered if/when mozilla would spawn a shell replacement program, or at least the ability to swap the built in HTML renderer.
But then, you can swap the whole damned shell if you like too. http://lsfaq.shellfront.org/

I can think back now on having to endlessly explain how to do the most simple tasks to my Mom, over the phone, and getting very irritated with her.
Of course, she's been gone for several years now, and I wish like hell I could just have her around to fix her damned PC, or hear her laugh about how lost she is with Windows.
I guess my point is that maybe we should all take a little bit of pleasure in the little things in life, like helping a friend or family member, and not get all wrapped up in "how much is it worth to us."
Not everything in life needs equate to a monetary value.

IE? Security? Does this mean they are ripping ActiveX from the browser/engine?
How long before a Mozilla-based browser gives me the ability to rip out MSHTML from the OS!?!?
That's what I'm talking about! Security through OS modification!
Now, if we can only get the Mozilla folks to abandon the idiotic name "SeaMonkey" and call it something cool, like OpenMozilla.org.
Hell, while they're at it, why not make composer into a fully fledged Word Processor. We need another of those, right? no?
I digress. I seriously don't see how MSIE v.whatever can ever be considered secure, so long as they retain ActiveX and non-standard rendering.

Not everything in life needs equate to a monetary value.
The web page lists only 160GB Hard drive.
That seems hardly worthwhile, when even if you rip a movie from the DVD (movie only, for storage) you will end up with roughly 5gb of data.
Add in a household full of CD media, and that will fill up pretty fast.
I'd suggest a much larger HDD, if possible.
But I thought you didnt' _NEED_ a book to fully realize the power of a Mac.
Also, I found "Part III - Advanced" in the review goes over CUPS. I mean, really, is CUPS advanced???
