I live in NZ.
Here victims have very little rights really, an example is a farmer who went to jail (Im pretty sure) for shooting at burglars on his farm who were stealing a quadbike. They had stolen other vehicles from his farm recently, and he had been camping out waiting for them to return. When he shot at the men, I believe they were only wounded, but it caused an awful lot coverage on the news.
I believe the farmer should have the right to protect his equipment, especially since he lived far out from any cities.
I cant imagine what it must be like to be in America, where everyone has a gun and is ready to shout "nnnnnng, hes comin' right at usssssss" (Southpark refference)
I bought the DVD of that movie, thinking I would get over my fear of the movie I watched by myself a few times when I was like 8 or so. It IS still more terrifying in my memory, I reckon being on tape made it scarier with the sound quality kinda humming/echoing and random static crackle bits.
Your signature says to let this slide, but I cant help myself.
I said I can understand that the Xbox 360 has better graphics in real applications. Sure, I get that. I say theres lots of things I dont like about the PS3, and that Im not a fanboy for the PS3. However I still get called fanboy!
You think the PS2 was a bad dvd player? dude, you are so totally wrong about that, PS2 did dvds right out of the box, know how I know? Because mine came with two games, two controllers and a DVD of Spiderman 2. A great package, and perfect for dvd movies. You seem to think the PS2 needed you to buy a remote! Nothing wrong with using a controller, especially the new wireless ones on the PS3. The dvd player was the worst you had seen? in what way? you could get a remote if you wanted one, I never did, the quality, its not like it had static etc through the picture? Surround sound wasnt up to your standard? Im sure that average 40 dollar (NZ, maybe $20-30 american) DVD player is a lot worse than the PS2 was. The Xbox had a terrible remote.
You say you are a sony hater, and bring up about sony not liking companies that import games etc etc. Have you read about Microsoft? I've never heard of people hating a company more than MS. With practically 100% of people (practically) using Windows, its very hated, and thats BEFORE Vista! I explained Im not a fanboy, I dont have any Sony Tattoos (would consider an Apple logo thought), I wont ignore the DRM thing etc.
The George Forman is smaller than a PS3, unless you have an American sized one:) The PS2 was known as "darth vaders toaster".
In terms of the PS2 being "an order of magnitude" overhyped, about say, the toystory quality graphics, I think games like Metal Gear Solid 2 etc qualify as having CG movie quality graphics, wouldnt you? There are jagged lines (which drive me nuts on GTA 4, its so beautiful apart from that) but overall I think that MGS2 counted as having "movie quality" graphics, especially at the time.
I believe the Xbox lost MS a big bundle of money. The 360 is still not an earner? Sure the PS3 has cost Sony a lot Id assume, but overall I would think that the PS2/3 have been more successful in anyones view than Xbox/360? Did that make you snort?
About the cost of wifi/bluetooth, you say about support and development costs, what a load of BS. Many cheap MP3 players have both now, I mean very cheap, the kinds that Apple haters buy. Many cheap gadgets now have wifi and bluetooth built in. I see the PS3 as "being a jack of all trades" when it comes to functions, Its perfectly good as a DVD player, I used my PS2 for my substantial dvd collection, it does cds, games, pictures, videos.......I wish it did some extra things or did some basic folder stuff better, but overall its pretty much what I had expected.
About faceplates, have you got an Xbox 360 with a good looking faceplate? Faceplates were always terrible I think, I had a Lord of the Rings one on my Nokia a while back, and it looked terrible on a phone. Do you mean more of like "wow, my xbox is red/blue/black, well at least on the front"? You can get decal type faceplates for the PS3, things like flames and skulls, the usual crap. My iPhone doesnt need faceplates, I dont see why a PS3 would. If you have a good looking faceplate, Id like to know!
Have a great day wherever you are friend, if you have the time, drop me a reply:)
In terms of mostly design I feel the 360 feels dated. I look at the two of them together, and its like they said "the xbox was too fat, it has to be thin, oooh, Apples doing white, Microsoft's hip too" etc etc. Its like its trying to be a product of its time, one of the "cool kids":)
I think of the PS3 as being much more "timeless", although I did swear a bit when I saw how big it was first time! I replaced a slimline PS2 with the PS3....its just shocking!
Wifi and HDD not built in, its just damn stupid. Like people on here have said, developers have to aim for the lowest spec. I cant believe they took the HDD out, and wifi, from one teardown of the PS3 they estimated it cost "one dollar" each to add bluetooth and wifi to the PS3. Sounds a funny figure to me, but surely its cheap enough compared to the CPU/GPU to give it wireless networking?
I myself am dissapointed with the PS3 in alot of ways like I said. I love having the gamer profiles etc on Xbox Live and wish my PS3 had something similar.
I cant believe how much you underestimated the PS2's impact. I guess you are American? Well here in NZ and in a few other countries I could think of, the PS2 was huge. It was the first practical DVD player for a lot of people. It played PS1 games still. It was familiar and very powerful for the time. It sure looks ugly now, but then think about what the original Xbox looks like!!!!
Remember how the original xbox, you had to pay to get dvd playback?
Using DVD rather than HD DVD or Blu Ray was just stupid. I see a lot of people complaining about the price of things. Well, in NZ things cost more than America, and with something like a PS3 or Xbox360, I would rather pay a hundred dollars or so more to get "essential features" like wifi etc.
We have been shafted recently with the censored version of GTA 4 (because a totally different country doesnt have an R18 rating for games WTF?) and only having the 40GB PS3 on sale here!
I see the Xbox 360 and dont even want to touch it, I find almost everything about it repulsive, the colour and design, the exclusive games, apart from halo, dont do it for me etc etc.
take it anyday over the Xbox 360.
Im not a fanboy, I can understand that it seems the xbox has better graphics IN THE REAL WORLD. I still hate the thing with a passion.
The PS3 is VERY far from what was promised if you ask me, but I'd rather have one anyday.
I agree, I feel the Xbox 360 is terribly dated compared to the PS3. I hear you cant tell from the graphics, and quite often the 360 versions have "brighter, more colourful visuals"?
But the console itself I feel is dated, no wifi, just got HDMI in as a sort of hack, now its gonna get Blu Ray (rumoured), its like they are trying to scramble after the PS3, which, is actually having its own problems really. I think its disapointing about the current Blu Ray vs HD DVD and Xbox 360 vs PS3 situation.
I hate how in New Zealand we only get the crippled 40GB PS3, I got a secondhand 60GB PS3 which in itself is a risk. I hate how the PS3 handles folders, and albums, to rename things is so difficult, browsing files on USB disks etc is so hard to do. Should all be very standard stuff.
Im crushed its not in there. Scenes like the elves leaving middle earth etc, they could have gone. But the death of the second main villain? hell, you cant really count Sauron as the main villain, everything is Saruman really, who made the armies, the weapons etc etc. The Eye is just like a ghost really. And they cut out how he dies, despite the fact hes like the main bad guy in all the movies!
You must admit they built up hobbiton in the first movie? the houses, where they eat and drink etc. And then its never used again. What a waste of the set.
How in the hell can you have ROTK without Scouring of the shire? My god, its like the best part. If you look at the whole adventure, its called for! Not just the prophecy bit WHERE THEY SHOWED SCENES OF IT, but at the very start of FOTR. You see how immature the hobbits were, playing about with fireworks, then having dish washing as a punishment! A couple days later (it seems from the movie), they are fighting trolls! Thousands of orcs that climb on the walls! A balrog! Ten thousand in TTT! A hundred thousand for the last battle! Oliphants for freaking sake, you hear how excited Sam was to hear rumours of them.
They have all changed as characters, the book makes that VERY clear. They are not hobbits anymore. They are now Gollum. Thats why Frodo, the main hero, the one who held the ring, who was closest to it, had to leave at the end of the story.
Hell, you must have seen the movies (being on/.), see how they dealt with Saruman? Even on the extended edition , it was so much better in the books.
I still have posters in my room, I have the main sword, and Saurons Gauntlet in its own glass dome (this could be a meme?), and I still hate the movies overall ending. I find them hard to watch, especially one after the other, because its all walking from here to there really. There is no overall plot line of character development compared to the books. Its like my countryman plucked a bunch of Hollywood stereotypes and blu-tacked them together. Having 10 endings, none of which are Scouring? For Shame:(
I used to really like sony, and recently got a secondhand 60GB PS3 because here in New Zealand we can only get the 40GB which is just terrible. (anyone with a 40GB, whats next to the drive, where the memorycard slots are on mine, does it still have a door that opens?)
Im annoyed hearing how the PS3s 2x speed BD drive is slower than the far cheaper Xbox 360 DVD drive. Its about 9MB per second vs the Xbox's 15MB, basically half the speed! For things like loading times, this is not a good thing.
Seriously, if those two believe its the right thing to do, then who are we to argue? I thought Vegetarians were silly when I was little, I saw it as a hippie thing, but then with quotes like above, I decided it was right for me. Its been a year and a half now, and I feel much better than ever before! I have a physical job, and am honestly fitter than ever.
Why yes, I have used an AK47 before. Nothing wrong with it. Many other people would consider it a fine weapon as well, do you have a grudge against it?
Admittedly, no I am not a current soldier on a battlefield. I did not start the talk of guns, just mentioned that I liked the AK47 better than the M16, both of which I have tried. Have you used both of them?
Wish I had modpoints for you, that was a quality comment sir.
I get very angry seeing the anti-soviet tone on/., yes I find the "in soviet russia" jokes funny at times, in the same way Borat is funny. But to truly believe that "because we were at war with them years back and beat them, they are always going to be losers compared to us. U-S-A! U-S-A!"
I find it amazing that the Soviets got anything done even remotely near the level they have. Think of space stations, HELL, first into space etc etc etc, they had drones flying about LONG before the Americans even looked up at the moon!:P
Shame about the AC's comment. I'd take an AK47 anyday, not only is it far better as an assault rifle, THEY ARE NOT MEANT TO BE SNIPER RIFLES, but its also better looking, you'd have to agree the heavy metal and polished wood looks a lot nicer than the plastic M16!
Do you really see Linux taking off anytime soon? (and yes I do know this is slashdot:) )
In NZ, we have a couple computers on sale by mainstream retailers. Theres a parallel importer that puts out flyers everywhere, they have a pretty darn cheap box, running ubuntu. Now, I have played around with it, with the live cd etc. But imagine what Grandmas gonna do when she gets her new computer and it doesnt do anything that shes expecting, she learned on Windows!
Personally I find Linux...yes I know this is slashdot... weirder to use FOR A DESKTOP COMPUTER. Im not saying linux isnt the best thing since ever when it comes to servers and the like. I'd just take my 12 inch Powerbook running OSX 10.5 over any flavour of linux anyday.
It seems that linux is always "just" about to break through into the mainstream. Think about, like IBM and Apple etc supporting open source, but has it really changed the makeup of who uses linux?
The PS3 comes all ready for you to put Linux on it, under the settings menu it has "install new os" and tells you about formatting the hdd for it, how to get Linux etc etc. Could you really tell people to go and buy a PS3 and install linux on it, all ready to work with a usb/bluetooth keyboard and mouse, plus your tv, over a normal windows/mac computer?
I just dont see linux being the main os in any hurry is all, or even a contender.
Im lucky enough to have gotten an unlocked iPhone here in NZ, its probably still "a year away" from being on sale here.
I love so many things about it, I'm on a prepay account, here its costs about NZ$10 a MB, and as you know it doesnt have 3G, so its bloody expensive for dialup speed on GPRS. I dont use any of the "iPhone features" like the weather, Youtube, Google Maps etc because of the cost. I leave its wifi off unless Im downloading new apps through Installer etc. And as a normal phone I love it, much better than my RAZR in almost everyway.
It certainly feels great to just use as a phone. Thats why I like it. Its also "the best iPod" about, hell, you can play music through its one speaker on the bottom! wow!
Apart from price, running cost etc, I dont see how anyone could have a problem with the iPhone.
Is thicker than MacBook Air. Winner: MacBook Air.
Really, who gives two craps about thickness... it's all marketing from Apple. Who has honestly gone "Gee wizz, this laptop is just too darn THICK for my needs!"? Pretty much no-one... where does it being super, super thin make for a big boon? Any bag you're going to carry said laptop in is going to be able to handle another centimeter or so... geeze.
Once people could have said a cordless phone was "just marketing". But if I try and use a corded one, it drives me freakin' nuts!
Just bought my first mac, a secondhand 12 inch Powerbook, I see the ads on tv here in NZ non stop it seems for the MBA, it makes My Precious look morbidly obese.
Have you read Fake Steve Jobs book Options? The end shows his next Insanely Great computer, if not, go out and buy his book!!!!
(ok, its a sheet of clear plastic that has keyboard, screen everything buit....omg MBA ad just came on arrrrgh this laptop if fat!....everything built into this clear plastic, it rolls up and fits into a tube)
Great post, just thinking that myself! Its rather crazy eh? What about how the Mac was so much better in basically every way than the Lisa, EXCEPT for not having HDD/Networks, basically it was like quarter the price right?, but without a HDD and Ethernet. Crazy!

The Dragonfly (German term: "Libelle"). The insect has extraordinarily hyper agile flying capabilities at its disposal. It protects and stabilises its organs by means of a liquid coating - and that at accelerations of 30 g.
LIBELLE G-Multiplus® is a system which improves the physical power of endurance of pilots flying modern combat aircraft - making it now at all possible to exploit the aircraft in terms of the technical feasible flight characteristics. System development has been completed, tested in detail and is now on the verge of being launched on the market.
The versatility of modern military jets presents maximum physical stress on pilots. With each change in direction the crews are exposed to forces corresponding to a multiple of the normal gravitational force on earth (equalling 1 g). The current generation of military jets already exposes pilots to 7 to 9 times the normal gravitational forces. As a result of these enormous forces the pilots blood is pulled into the lower half of the body. The consequences: the higher the load, the greater the danger that the pilots brain, as well as his eyes, will not be provided with sufficient oxygen; that leads to Grey-Out (loss of the ability to identify colours), followed by tunnel vision (limited vision). The next step is Black-Out, a complete loss of vision. The most extreme consequence due to insufficient oxygen supply to the brain is g-LOC, the gravity induced loss of consciousness. This circumstance is fatal for the aircrew in the majority of cases. Last but not least, high or long accelerations lead to extreme pain in the arms and legs which can be hardly tolerated.
The performance potential of modern combat aircraft of the third and the fourth generation (e.g. Eurofighter Typhoon, F22 Raptor, JAS 39 Gripen) cannot be fully exploited, as they expose the pilots to an extremely high g-load. In particular, g-onset rates in combat aircraft of the fourth generation can be as high as 20 g per second, i.e. the pilot and the aircraft reach the maximum permissible acceleration of for example 10 g in less than half a second. The physiological threshold and stress level of the pilot therefore currently represents the weakest link in the man/machine interface. Thereby he is unable to fully exploit the combat effectiveness of modern military jets."
Its almost funny that posts like yours pop up nowadays:)
The first iMac, friggin wow, can you think of a computer from that era? I know what I was using, but I bet you dont remember any OTHER one as much as you would the iMac and your own computer(s). I was at school at the time, and we got a Mac using principal, he bought the school macs. It was truly a miracle in every sense of the word:) We went from these huge beige boxes, and mice that had SCREW IN connectors for gods sake, big white mice with "MICROSOFT" on them, terrible shape, to a bunch of iMacs with The Puck. The Principal got himself the best iMac, the DV, for video editing, it was BLACK and had a better video card basically, maybe more firewire or something too. That one came with the Apple Pro Mouse. That was the first Optical Mouse I had seen, and I was smitten. Lusting for a mouse!
The iPod was the same for me, my cousin brought her 3G over to my work and let me play with it, I didnt even listen to one single song, just played with the scroll wheel and saw what it had to offer. I wanted one from the very first second I saw it. Nothing else at that time, about 2003, had the same effect. Sony Discmans, maybe a similar price, they were just crap now. Any other HDD music players were JUNK.
I think the Macbook Air looks great, not for me, but its still great. I can respect that people out there want one. I guess you can blame the other manufacturers for not being in the same "league" as Apple. Theres no ASUSWORLD, I dont get excited over a new NEC laptop. Showmanship counts, think about, Jobs showed the first iBook, it was using wifi, the audience didnt know that, they were blown away by those bright colours already, and then he put it on the net, and passed that laptop through a hoop. No wires. The crowd loved it. I loved it.
If other companies made products as good as Apples, then Apples would come down in price, and there would be more features developed, through competition. There just isnt anything out there that does it for me the same as the Apple products do.
I made an online friend with a guy through an online game, he started telling me about his life etc. Turns out, he was hit by a drunk driver, who happened to be well off, and the family sued (Americans:P) for some insane amount, "you hit our son with your car, thats 60 million dollars" which they ended up getting a fair amount of coin. He lost the lower half of one leg, below the knee I believe he said, and for that, they managed to get over half a million american dollars, something like $600K lets say, plus hes on all sorts of benefits and the like, so he doesnt ever have to even think of working for his whole life.
I cant believe that, but its true, according to the guy I met online:) He had one of the top 20 characters on the game, a very popular worldwide game, and said he had an even stronger character he sold to make really good money. He had an LCD tv before they were common, probably has every gadget you could think of. I dont think he ever really touches the money he was awarded from what he told me, so hes making good interest, while living off welfare (so to speak)
I never thought I would pick up touchtyping, surely you must be close to being able to touchtype being a programmer for so long?
At my school we had this old bat who went on and on about strict manners etc, she went nuts about posture and having the B key lined up with your Belly Button (god!) etc. Started teaching typing with Keyboards haha, we found them one day in a closet, hard to imagine us using those instead of Word! Its a big leap for a 70 year old woman, when she was teaching us, from old cast iron looking things, to electronic cheap plastic, to Pentium II's running NT. We learned through The Boring Booklet, she actually called it that, where you typed words over and over for minutes and minutes, a long time when its "better, better, better, better...", however her lack of knowledge was great, she didnt cotton on to copy and paste!
Im Sitting Here On An Excercycle And Almost Hit The Handlebars from laughing at that. Like most other people I didnt see Snakes on a plane but damn, I can imagine "I have had it with these MF Snakes in this MF Brain!" lol. Thanks for a laugh.
I believe the farmer should have the right to protect his equipment, especially since he lived far out from any cities.
I cant imagine what it must be like to be in America, where everyone has a gun and is ready to shout "nnnnnng, hes comin' right at usssssss" (Southpark refference)

Scariest. Movie. Ever.

For gods sake, you even "squirt" data!
Betcha Ballmer's got the chair version
Crazy!
"LIBELLE G-Multiplus® The Next Generation of Aircrew G Protection The LIBELLE G-Multiplus® The effects and advantages of the LIBELLE G-Multiplus® System Physiological effects in LIBELLE G-Multiplus® Design advantages of LIBELLE G-Multiplus® Tactical advantages of LIBELLE G-Multiplus® The LIBELLE G-Multiplus® The Dragonfly (German term: "Libelle").
The first iMac, friggin wow, can you think of a computer from that era? I know what I was using, but I bet you dont remember any OTHER one as much as you would the iMac and your own computer(s). I was at school at the time, and we got a Mac using principal, he bought the school macs. It was truly a miracle in every sense of the word :) We went from these huge beige boxes, and mice that had SCREW IN connectors for gods sake, big white mice with "MICROSOFT" on them, terrible shape, to a bunch of iMacs with The Puck.
I cant believe that, but its true, according to the guy I met online :) He had one of the top 20 characters on the game, a very popular worldwide game, and said he had an even stronger character he sold to make really good money. He had an LCD tv before they were common, probably has every gadget you could think of. I dont think he ever really touches the money he was awarded from what he told me, so hes making good interest, while living off welfare (so to speak)
