the coupon also came with the Ati AIW 9600 pro. unforetunetly, it didn't come with the Ati 9600 pro I got (the AIW wasn't out at the time), so I'm going to have to buy it.
also, I bougt CS:condition Zero used. and the idiot who owned it before has it registered with steam. he's going to be bumed when I mail the cd insert (w/cd key on it) to get it changed to my account.
I did point out to them that they are going to have a problem with people selling their copies and still using the cdkey on their accounts since steam doesn't require the cd to be in the drive.
uh, sure. I personally don't believe violence is the answer, sure sometimes I want to beat the shit out of some lameass for butting into my business, but that just doens't do much but prove you have anger management skills.
This day and age revenge is a dish I serve electronicly. Want to fuck with me? Sure no problem. Just don't cry when your credit get's screwed up, a childporn server appears on your computer, or your credit card info seems to be shared around.
That gives me a warm feeling even though I never get to see the persons face, or they even knowing why it's happening to them.
Just a little warning to everyone. You don't know the person you are being rude to, you don't know if they are insane and going to stalk you and hurt you later, or if they happen to be good at something and can use that to hurt them later. =)
This part is a little offtopic, but I used to work at this restaurant and their was this waiter who was an absoulte dick to me. Well, later on he applied at 2 different jobs I was working at, and both times I told the manager to throw away his app, which they did. Now maybe that didn't hurt him that much, but it did make me feel better for having to put up with his cheap shit from when I was working with him.
um, portable TV players have small screens and they are fine for watching TV on the go. of course, they suck to read any print on them, like while watching the news or so, but hey, if you have a long ferry ride (here in Seattle to Bremerton it's an hour ride) it would be great to catch up with the shows you recorded on your PVR while commuting.
I personally get motion sickness if I try to read while in a vehicle so I'm not sure if I could watch a video. probably on the ferry (butt I only take the sort West Seattle to Vashon Island ferry, 15 minutes) it's okay for me.
I'd love a device that I could listen to my music or watch a vid on, but I, like most smart people, am going to wait for storage space to get smaller and cheaper, and of course, for most the bugs to get worked out of the players. Which means probably by next chrismas or the year after that. (2006-2007)
Of course, used ones will be easy to pickup for probably a decent price.
it does NOT force to to redownload anything. if the programs already on your computer, the only thing you download is the updates.
Plus, here's a concept I'm sure alot of you didn't grasp either.
You don't have to use steam to play Half-life, etc.
Since half-life is a smart game, and doesn't rely on the registry, you can copy the directory anywhere and play it from that.
The only thing is, the WON network is not working anymore, so you'll have to use steam to play online. Just to double check, I just went into c:/sierra/half-life folder, loaded half-life (no problem) and click on multeplayer, and then on lan. No problem. Could set up a server on my lan and have my buddies over.
So, for all you silly people who don't bother checking anything before you start crying how horrible something is, Your half-life is still where you originally installed it, still is playable.
Sorry to burst the pity party bubble, but really now...

well, only a person who doesn't have kids (or taken care for 2-7 year olds) would say this. They usually don't do this on purpose, they just don't know better, and don't understand why either. You basicly don't have control over what they might do, which is why alot of the posts mention kids destroying cd's. It happens, all to often. DVD's are another problem. Sheesh, even your teenage kid can easily ruin a cd/dvd by accident. accidents happen, and the smart people make backups for when they do happen.
I sort of have the same problem. can't a low powered laptop without a numpad. sure, I can turn a section of keys into a numpad, but then I lose the functions of those keys.
I discovered ZAngBandTK which puts a nice graphical face on the game, various sizes and styles, and let's me control it with the mouse.
I can't get enough of the game now. granted ZAngBand is a little different then nethack, but not much.
okay, url, hm, http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=3624 now this isn't the exact home page, but it has it, and other links besides. It also has the link to download the file to play. I use the 32x32 isometric view myself. for some reason your icon is blocky but the others aren't. (don't know why that is).
it's fun, but too easy to die. which makes it that much more.
I tried to search out the first time someone said "Imagine a Beowulf cluster of..." (actually I left out the of... when I did the search). but I can only do 30 answers at a time, and since the information I want is going to be at the last page. I am not going to sit here and keep hitting next 30 until I get there. Sorry, I'm playing ZangbandTK, or Planescape: Torment. None, of the repetitious clicking for me.
those are the sort of question they should be asking me. =)
I'm running it on my laptop using wifi. don't laugh!
Celeron 650 mhz Savage IX 4 meg vid card 384 megs memory plenty of harddrive space. oh, wifi 11b. windows 2000 I play the game in software mode because the "glass" isn't transparent in D3D, and OpenGL locks up. I get 20 to 30 fps in games. it's decently playable, I just need to maybe stay in smaller games.
I like the Day of Defeat, but only got to play it before steam, and only once since steam. hey, B.S. and S.S. maybe that means something... =)
anyways, hopefully I won't have to play it on my laptop much longer, because I'm sure I won't have a problem with my desktop computers.
I have some ideas on what they can do to fix it, if they'll ever reply back to me. oh, maybe I should check my email.
Don't have a problem when I connect up, but most the time while it's "caching resources" it times me out.
I'm confused on this "Wild Tangent" thing. I thought it was a driver to use directx commands from a web site. mostly for playing web games. One of the authors has a column in CPU magizine, and he's mentioned a few times oh how he's trying to clear up this misconception that Wild Tangent is spy-ware. Does this "Wild Tangent" spy on your usage and report back to it's "headquarters" so it can pop up ads for you? Or is it for playing games? Or is it that some lame people have made some sort of spyware that uses the "wild tangent" engine to display, say, a dancing lady while it sends back info to it's (not "Wild Tangents") headquarters?
i mean, I could be wrong, but I can't see a publication like CPU Magazine letting a producer of spyware use his column in the magazine to tell convince people that he's not doing spyware when he really is.
So, unless you can show me some proof that the "wild tangent" driver/activex is actually spyware, and not a game engine, then hey, I'll make sure to tell CPU magazine that they've been duped.
yes, but steam sucks. I recently bought all the halflife game ($10 each, new copies). every since I did steam (had to because they switched to it only), I haven't been able to play day of defeat, but once. CS, which worked at first, no longer works. Team Fortress and the origianal Half-life and Opposing Force are the only ones I can play online now. of course CS and Day of Defeat are the ones I want to play.
Why can't I play them? while it's "caching resources" it times out and disconnects me from the server. and no, they haven't answered my emails or fixed the problem.
They aren't getting anymore money from me till they fix the problem. I do plan on getting HL2 when it comes out. By hook or by crook, I will.
anyways, the point I sort of trying to make is, Steam still has a long ways to go before it's okay. and I know valve's busy, but to not even have a auto-reply when you send them email, and as long as it takes them to answer back, makes you wonder if spam ate it...
Pharmboysaid: "...Like many slashdotters, I like to come here and discuss articles I have already seen on Groklaw and The Register a few days before..."
Oh, so that's what I'm doing wrong. I've been coming to slashdot for the news...
well, there's one little flaw with the "hosts" file, and that's you can only block domains at the root level. So if they hosts the ads on their own site, then you will still see them. Unless you use some sort of software that catches that, or turns of images, flash, etc.
I find Mike Skallas' Ad Blocking Hosts file Site a great site for maintain a hosts file. You have the option of using an installer that will install it to the right location regardless of OS (MS OS's, that is) He also includes the hosts file in a zip file. He seems to update it every couple of months or so, so I joined his mailing list, even though it's hosted through yahoo (I have a few yahoo accounts so it wasn't a big deal to me to join the mailing list), I've only receive 1 email from them in the 4 months or so I've been signed up.
I personally change the hosts file, myself. Though I use FireFox and Maxthon (formally MyIE2, probably changed their name so they wouldn't get sued since their "browser" is what IE could of been.
you don't think MS is the first? MS is just getting on the band wagon because so many other bad patents have been granted. They don't want to get left out in the dust if this actually stays binding. Hopefully, what it is, will be a wake up call for whoever regulates this stuff, if not, someone that knows about this stuff needs to start something to get it changed.
you'll still be able to get the mod chips and install them yourselves. I'm not surprised teh courts ruled it illegal because if they didn't, it would set presidence for future cases with other things, not just video game machines.
I guess the real question is, should we be able to moddify what we buy any way we want? apparently, in regards to the UK and PS2, no.
actually, no, it is still a bad idea in most cases. The only time it's not a bad idea is if you know NOTHING about computers and want to have a free tech support you can call up.
Now, if you want a machine made for special purposes, like gaming, video work, so on, and you know something about computers or can con a friend or family member who does, it's will be cheaper.
how? I'm glad you asked. See, I've always built my and others own computers. You want a quiet Media Center PC for the family room, no problem. You want a system capable of playing Doom3 and your on a budget? no problem. Doing a little research, it's very easy to find deals, and sales on all the componets you want. Quality componets, not mass produced Dell parts that get made by asian children. okay, maybe it's all made by asian children, but you get the picture. See, if you want certain componets in one of these "computer manufacters" you pay extra. But if you want the tech support, then go ahead and buy a prepaid computer. but remember, you do usually get what you paid for.
The noise doesn't bother me, though I've known it to bother others. What bothers me, is the lights. Lights on the fans, lights on the side of the case, light, lights, lightS!!!!!!! My solution? unglug all the lights, install fans without lights, change the inside neon lights to blacklights. bought some UV type paint, painted the insides in different places, like the connectors (which some company now sells replacement connectors which glow in the dark/ UV reactive).
but I guess that would be discracting in the living room, though probably not as much as the neon lights.
drawfour says "Yes, you can reset the BIOS password, but it requires more than hitting the power button and plugging something in."
yes, all you need is a command prompt (msdos boot disk) then type:
DEBUG
and hit Enter. You'll see a dash (-) at the DEBUG prompt. Now type:
o 70 2e
which will show as -o 70 2e at the DEBUG prompt. Hit Enter. Then type:
o 71 ff
and hit Enter. Finally type:
Q
that is one of the ways, there are a few others. don't work in all situations, but will work in most i've had to deal with.

I decided not to mod the talk because I wanted to reply to what is probably a troll post.
get a life.
who gives a fuck if twitter is so anti-MS
you don't like him, put him on your foe list.
But to NOT tell me how to mod anything. I take everything on a post by post basis.
mainly since your a AC ninny who's not man/women enough to post under your account.
Notice I don't have a problem replying under my account name.
so what, did twitter post something that you didn't like, and call you a troll or liar? probably because you relied to his post with an AC.
next time, log in when your going to tell people about how "horrible" someone here is. Give that person a chance to face his accuser.

Well, the link I click on (same one you all did) gives a list for books from 1990-2000.
/. haters a reason to be right?
No offense, but can't we even get that right? If the person who posted the story bothered to read the title of the article he/she would of saw that.
