The "article" sucked because the "article" was just a guy reminiscing about whatever sexual-intercourse-containing, mainstream, non-sex-oriented games he could remember. By no means is it a comprehensive or even representative report.

Some research and information about things like the very extensive Japanese dating-sim and H-game scenes would have been interesting.

  13. Xenosaga on La Pucelle Tactics Publisher Explains Alleged U.S. Censorship · · Score: 3, Interesting

There was something a little more drastic done in Xenosaga.
    **SPOILERS**
There's a scene in which the main antagonist nano-liquifies his arm and jams it into the abdomen of a young-girl-type character. In the original Japanese version it's pretty disturbing and pretty obviously suggestive. The US version replaced this scene was changed to him simply "absorbing" data from her brain through the air. It's been said that some of the creators actually prefer the gentler version.
Two other scenes were edited similarly. There is a full description with screenshots at Zenosaga.com.

Later I discovered the deliciously immersive Shenmue I & II; the final disc of II might be the most beautiful gaming I've ever had.

Games like these and other quirky and original titles are what makes DC my favorite console. At first I was turned off by the WinCE logo and the non-fighter-friendly controller, but once I realized the intoxicating level of creativity going on with this system, I was in love with it.

  16. Flash on OS Independent Games? · · Score: 1

On the subject of cross-platform games, I'm rather surprised more ambitious games have not been released in Flash. You can't put together a MMOFPS or something, but it seems that you could assemble a SNES-grade RPG or something similar. The budget would be tiny and the game would run on nearly any modern PC. Why isn't this kind of thing done more? It seems like the only things I've seen done in Flash are three-minute diversions.

  18. Appeal on Has The Xbox Failed In Japan? · · Score: 5, Interesting

In a Japanese game shop, you see racks and racks of attractive PS2 games with a wide variety of genres from war-simulation to dating (sometimes both in the same game), GameCube and GBA titles galore, shelves and shelves of used PS and DC (and even Saturn games). The packages are very attractively illustrated in a Japanese aesthetic, and then... In the corner, this radioactive-green glow emanates from the XBox shelf, an ugly contrast to the pastels and rich colors of the other games. The games themselves are FPSes, sports, a platformer here and there. It's simply not attractive compared to the competition, in a country where such a thing really matters.

The last time I was in Japan (last summer), there were more new Dreamcast games coming out than XBox games. That's encouraging to a DC fanboy like me, and indicative of the XBox's acceptance there.

Tecmo is arguably the only important Japanese developer that takes the XBox very seriously. Everyone else ports to it or releases a game or two just to cover their bases.
