Same here. Civ IV is the last PC game that I will ever buy.
I gave it my best the first week I had it, but after numerous crashes and hengs, I had to move on. I've been watching the patches that have come out, but haven't tried any yet as they don't seem to address any of the issues that I had.
Next time, Im pirating. I don't give a shit. I've purchased too many rushed, unstable, and overpriced PC games. I'm not going to get burned again.
It was a huge dog turd. There was nothing redeming about it. The closest it came to matching the original pac-man was the picture on the outside of the box. Now, Atari did redeem themselves with the 2600 Ms Pac-man, but their original... godawful!
no, that number is exactly the amount that have been sold to consumers. The article doesn't state it, but the Nintendo press release that the article was written from does:
"It's important to note that these strong figures represent Nintendo hand-held units and games that consumers have purchased and are now enjoying at home or wherever they like to play."
seems like a nice little jab to Sony and their "shipped" figures.
I ordered in early in Dec and it took weeks to get to me. (apparently its sold out everywhere and selling for 2X retail on ebay.) I've now been playing it for about two weeks and am horribly addicted.
I've actively considered bringig it into work with me so I could sneak off and get a few minutes playtime in.
I don't know about you, but I've had the damndest time just keeping up with new releases.
I'm in the middle of Dragon Quest8 and Mario Kart right now. That Ico sequel (whatever its called) and Animal Crossing are sitting shrinkwrapped on my desk. Civ4 is right next to them, waiting on a decent patch. And Katamari 2 and Mario+Luigi are being neglected.
This job/life thing can really be a drag on my video game consuption.
Thats an odd comment to me, and IMO can only come from someone not familier with Nintendo's business practices. Their mantra for the past year has been all about *expanding* the current market with untested and innovative market sectors.
Furthermore, they also happen to be doing that at the same time as raking in a pile of cash. Fiscal year *profits* are typically around a billion dollars. And they have huge cash reserves.. around 5 billion IIRC.
done with the game in 2 hours?? methinks you haven't actually played nintendogs. First off -- there's nothing to actually 'finish'; theres nothign you have to be 'done' with. Its something you enjoy, not beat.
How can anybody write about expensive video game systems and NOT mention the Neo Geo. In the early 90's, that sucker had *games* selling in the multiple of hundreds of dollars. It was the king of the hill in terms of $$$s (until the 360 came along)
And also, I don't think its fair to compare a video game console with full blown computers from the past.
clickable and dual analog are only variations based upon the initial innovation, hardly innovations in and of themselves. Granted Nintendo copied the idea of a wireless joystick, but many will argue that they were the first to actually do it right.
and Light Guns?? Read up on your history. Nintendo INVENTED light guns way back in the 70's. They actually opened up arcades with nothing but lightguns, and then spun that out into a number of odd home versions. The first version of Duck Hunt was actually built back in the 70's (and not on the NES as many beleive).
Also, please keep in mind that ALL innovations in controllers have been due in large part to Nintendo. Analoge controls, shoulder buttons, the freakin' directional pad, rumble, and so on.
Don't dismiss the Revolution controller so quickly...
And here I am, 31 and I have no interest in the PS2 or XBox because, in my mind, all of those games are geared toward children.
FPS's bore me to death; bouncing (digital)boobies and blood do nothing for me. I'll take a zelda, mario, or any other Nintendo first party title any day of the week.
If you consider Nintendo's "set-top business area" to be in serious trouble, then what category would you place the PS2 and Xbox?
Only 1 company has had consistant profits this generation, and only 1 company is solely focused on building video games.
Sony is in a ton of markets, but their cash cow used to be the PS2. They've lost that this year and the whole company is struggling (as evidenced by their revised projected yearly profit). MSFT home & entertainmet has had 1 quarterly profit in its existence, and is in no way, shape or form close to digging themselves out of their 2 billion dollar hole. I don't think Microsoft build an OS and Office empire just to support a video game experiment.. how many more billions lost before Ballmer pulls the plug?
And on another note, if a 2-to-1 sales advantage over the closest competitor can be considered to be "just (barely)" by you, then I don't even know why we'd consider your thoughts on the business at all.

If I understand how FunCom has their games set up, its nothing new. Its the same way that Id did it back in the day with Doom and Doom 2.
The first level is shareware, if you want to play the other 9 you have to buy the game...
me too
I think it depends on what your definition of "successful" is.
If you were to base it on net profits, then Nintendo is the one and only successful video game company compared to Sony, MSFT, Sega, Nokia...
Now, if you were to consider the definition based on the mindset of the dorks down at EbGames, then I would agree with you.
Halfway decent??
... godawful!

except that he GD routinely allowed tapers to tap into the soundboards. As I understand it, thats where the majority of these soundboards came from
You know, I just don't get that joke.
Is it a Harry Potter reference (haven't seen or read any yet), or am I just getting too old these days??
and to think, with my Gamecube I just turn it on
"can't afford to burn cash establishing a market"
.. around 5 billion IIRC.

"it's the rare live recordings that should be priced more agressively"
Doesn't the whole concet of 'rare' go out the window with a product that can be reproduced instantly and infinitely?

well, its there now. Must have been added afterwards, I guess..

N64 had memory cards. They plugged into the controller and retailed for around $20.
This has EVERYTHING to do with free speech.
Who gets to decide whats porn and whats not? Who gets to decide whats art and whats not?
Arpanet?

c'mon mods. surely somebody on Slashdot gets the above.
