If you don't already know, use a credit card company that allows you to set up a virtual credit card number. The idea is that it is a number that is used only once. Therefore, if that number gets stolen, it is still useless, you've already used it once. (I could be wrong, but this is the general idea, a use once or low credit amount or an expiration date that ends in a month type of credit card number.)

Which do we want, relevant advertisements that may pique our interest at the cost that a company mines our purchase history or annoying advertisements that we could care less about and keep our data "private"?

  14. Re:Um, partition is still good on Switching to Windows, Not as Easy as You Think · · Score: 1

Partitioning Linux style with a Windows XP machine is like pulling teeth! I know, I pulled a few "teeth" setting up my current setup. I have my C: drive as "root", my D: drive as "Program Files" and "Documents and Settings", and my P: drive as my "Virtual Memory". Of course, my P: drive constantly complains to me that it is running out of space because I statically set the swap amount to use the entire drive. I was not able to, during installation, specify that the "Doc & Set" and "Prog Files" should be on the D: drive. I spent countless hours in the registry renaming all the "C:\Doc & Set" to "D:\Doc & Set", etc. I reinstalled the OS 4 times trying to get it right.

However, I will say that my experience in trying to install Ubuntu, Gentoo, Fedora Core, and Suse have been a mixed bag. Windows XP installs the fastest, in my experience (about 30-45 minutes). I haven't successfully installed Gentoo (I've come close, but I miss a step or two somewhere.) Ubuntu gives me a nice CLI, but it has trouble installing a GUI. Fedora Core and Suse have nice installs and were the most user friendly from beginning to end, whether you wanted to manually partition or let the installer do it for you.

    Just my experience.

They wouldn't, but you knew that.

    2) Those CDs would quickly become dated as new versions are released. Geeks wouldn't keep them around because they can generally download what they need.
Very true. Of course, I had to learn that with my own utility CDs/DVDs. But, then again, it serves as a repository for applications I had forgotten about and don't use often (use once in awhile).

    3) Not to stereotype, but do you think the typical user who is interested in AOL dial-up service is also going to be interested in trying new/different open source apps?
Actually, Yes. We are assuming that AOL users open all their e-mail, every attachment, try every new product (including stuff with spyware, weatherbug, etc), download every game they can get their hands on. They are certainly going to keep hitting the [OK] button until the install is complete. (This having installed F/OSS stuff, they may take a chance to look at it.)

Does this mean, they'll like it? Maybe/maybe not. I have mixed feelings about OO.org. I like it, use it, but it doesn't meet all needs. I had to install Excel to complete a statistical analysis class.

    4) Would this typical AOL user be remotely interested in the philospohical arguments behind F/OSS or even care that those arguments exist?
Surprisingly, many are concerned about privacy and philosophical arguments. However, being new to teh intarweb, AOL is all they've ever heard. (Even down to the Boy Scout computer merit badge, read it for a good laugh. I remember those days, the 14y/o kids don't and are bewildered.)

I'm not all that surprised by the lack of a RAM price drop. I'm not surprised by the statement, "What the heck am I going to do with 2GB of RAM?" My point to this is, I bought a computer nearly 4 years ago. I put 512MB of ram on it. Since then, I have not felt the need to push it beyond that. Sure, if I played Everquest (huge memory hog for textures) then I _might_ think of getting more. Still major PC manufacturers are still building PCs with 256MB of RAM, and have been doing this for at least 2 years.

Sure, with more memory, software can load its bloated self there and run a lot faster, but if the software was written a few years ago, it probably isn't aware that it could load its entire bloated self into memory (unless the programmers were forward thinking.)

These are my reasons RAM hasn't increased in price, and probably won't drop. There is a happy medium in the economy of memory.

Many major mfg's (Dell, Gateway, Compaq, etc.) from the 90's would sell extra RAM, and hardware at outrageous prices ($150.00 for that 32MB of SDRAM) where you could purchase the same item for $60.00 down the road.
