  1. Honest Question on Is Rodi BitTorrent's Replacement? · · Score: 1

I did RTFA, but it left me a little confused. Actually a lot confused.

Does C opt-in to being complicit in a transfer between B and someone? Does C get to know the details of the transfer? If so, is there anyway of C knowing whether or not what he/she is doing is legal? At least with bittorrent I can be mindful that I am only serving up bits I'm allowed to serve.

Well, I AM a developer so I suppose that makes my opinion more valid:

Best Game: Ratchet and Clank 3. This is the most fun I have had playing a game in a while. What game has been made recently that's more fun than R&C3?

I am as well. I agree with all of your picks except best game (and maybe best writing. I might give that to Sly 2). While UYA was a lot of fun and that shouldn't be understated, it was only marginally better than Going Commando. On the other hand, we had some really excellent picks this year that ALSO did something new:

    - Burnout 3 is a racing game that even people who don't like racing games normally can enjoy. For sheer excitement, no game this year beats it. Some of the game design elements are so subtly beautiful that they are easy to miss. I think this game has been overshadowed by Katamari Damacy when we talk about Game Design.

    - World of Warcraft is probably the most ambitious game of all time. When you have to deal with the fact that there are people _addicted_ to your game, you know you have something. Whether you agree or not that it reached the superlatives that everyone seems to lavish it with is your call.

    - How in the world has everyone forgotten that Pandora Tomorrow was a 2004 release? While the single player was... less than spectacular, the multiplayer was incredibly original and fun.

-Must I even comment on Katamari Damacy?

As far as pure fun goes, Up Your Arsenal is probably in the top 10, but I wouldn't put it as #1. Damn it's good to be a gamer.

Bigger sites coomit the same sin (just read the Halo 2 review in gamespot, and then look at the score), but if you guys want to gain the audience that gamers once had, you have to do better than this.

And you have to stop halting my experience with full screen ads every page because I refuse to let you put a tracking cookie on my computer. The "Click here to skip this ad" is also barely visible in Firefox.

I know you need to feed the bandwidth family, but please come up with a less obtrusive advertising scheme. I won't be going back to gamers.com because of this (it simply takes too long to see if it is worth my time) so you won't be getting my eyeball revenue anyway.

    Just my hopefully constructive criticism.

Enemies that drop ammo and stores is not something that I would normally equate to a Resident Evil game. If they dropped Raccoon City AND they dropped most of the old play mechanics, what exactly is 'Resident Evil' to RE4 but the name?

BTW, Mercenaries is not a sequel, so I don't even know why it is being discussed unless the thread really isn't about sequels and rather about interesting shifts in gameplay.

Last year when bored I became a fan of turning my UT2003 single-player speed ('slomo') down to something far below normal, like 0.001, 1.0 being normal. At that speed it became more like an elaborate chess game, where you had minutes to decide where to go or who to shoot first. While it's not for everyone, it made for some very interesting matches -- you savor the triumph of a frag a little more, and then kick your own ass for not noticing the guy behind you for four minutes.

That is something I've thought about a lot. But the realization I've come to is that ad-revenue backed sites tend to at least be accountible for their scores and reviews.

I've seen so many forum posts and independent websites that fall into the general industry memes and hype that predetermine a game's fate before it is ever picked up.

This year Madden had to up the bar because someone else came up with a new product comperable and sold it for $20. With no competition to rattle the sword expect the consumer to be the one who ends up suffering.

Madden 2005 was already in the testing phase when Take Two announced the $20 price point. So to infer that Madden 2005 is excellent because of that is probably incorrect.

ESPN 2k4 was fourth in sales last year behind Madden, NCAA 2004 and NFL Street insofar as sales of football games goes. I think the competition of "Why the hell should I buy Madden AGAIN this year?" was a bigger competitive force than ESPN's offering. That's just my opinion though.

:: I could CARE LESS what numbering system people use, personally, I can count from 1 to 5 or 1 to 100 and I also know that 5 is a greater number than 1 and 100 is a greater number than 1. This to me, means that a higher score is better, despite minor differences, this is pretty clear, even between such devious numbers as 89 and 98 which seems to perplex him.::

I believe the point is that a game that gets 4/5 is certainly NOT NECCESSARILY the same opinion as a game that gets 80/100. The fact is that the scales do not match up and scores are often chosen in a completely arbitrary manner. I can tell you how to compare something that is one foot and something that is sixteen inches, but I cannot tell you how to compare games that were scored 3 stars versus 7.1/10. (To that degree, I can't tell you the difference between an 8.2 and an 8.3) What does a 9.0 for a sports game mean when compared to a 9.0 of a strategy game?

People want numeric scores because it makes reviews easy to compare and quick to skim, but it ends up being a false sense of measurement because it makes little or no sense to compare numbers between reviewers, between games or between systems.
