This said on a web site that constantly talks about open source software. Don't get me wrong, nothing tangible is free, but but its a whole different situation with intellectual property.
Well, this just goes to show Linux isn't 100% perfect: Even with all the great programs for Linux, even Linus sometimes needs to use WINE for something.:)/ducks fanboys and humorless mods
Why not give them The OpenCD instead? Non-techies aren't likely to switch to Linux easily, but you can still promote open source by giving them programs they need for their current (Windows) operating system. It's much more likely they'll use this than a Linux distro.
So help a third party out with your vote instead. I live in MA too, and I'm going to vote for David Cobb of the Green Party. Ya, he won't win (that's not my intention anyways), but if he gets enough votes it'll keep the Green Party on the ballot for the next election. They may not win any near-future election, but given enough time the party will gain enough power to do so. And if you don't like the Green Party, vote Libertarian instead. Or pick another third party that better fits your opinions. When these parties are finally as powerful as the Big Two, we'll finally be able to have a real democratic election in this country.
Nintendo doesn't have to be like Todd McFarlane to become more mature. All they have to do is make games with more serious storylines (and maybe a little blood here and there).
They've done a good job of this with the Metroid series so far, and it is likely that the Zelda series (remember Ganon bleeding in the last battle of Ocarina of Time?) may also become similar.
This isn't blind fanboyism; it's understanding the way things are now. Sure, there could/will be spyware for Linux in the future, and programmers should work on a way to get rid of it when it appears. But for now Linux is safer. Most spyware is made for Windows; this is a fact. Until Linux does have spyware, you can't say it isn't safer. It may not be safer forever, but it is now.
IE is still the most "popular" browser, so yes, we do have to. Until other browsers have greater or equal market share, there's a need to inform all those who still use IE (and yes, this includes some people on Slashdot).
Google may have a chance at being the first to defeat IE as the #1 web browser. Sure, Joe Average thinks IE=Internet, but after a enough people find this browser just by going to Google, JA will likely want to switch to something more secure/featureful/Google-based if enough of his friends are using it. Of course, Firefox could still win against this browser (whether simply in the long run or just because it has had more time to build a following), but Google's name recognition alone could defeat it.
(note: This is not a troll against Firefox; I've been a loyal Firefox user since the early versions, and have no intentions to switch.)
You'll want this link then. And if you have a Mac, this link should help. Still, keep in mind that Firefox was originally meant to be a Windows program (but it doesn't hurt to be available on multiple platforms though, which I'm definitely in support of).
This isn't us environmentalists creating hype for this product; it's a company who thinks we're dumb that is. Don't insult us just because a peice of junk is marketed at us; if you're going to do that, then you'd have to call geeks stupid because Windows is marketed to them. That wouldn't be fair either, but neither is your comment.
People have been claiming that mankind has run out of ideas for a long time. The US patent office once announced that they were done with their work because everything that could possibly be invented was already made - and this was somewhere around 1900 (the actual date escapes me at the moment). Trust me, new ideas never stop appearing, new technology never stops being invented, and new stories about these never stop being written.
I'm assuming this was a joke that the moderators didn't get. Interesting? Try Funny. Listening to "Willenium" obviously isn't going to improve universities.
I read your blatant attempt to advertise the free iPod pyramid sceme on/. and get a sudden urge to mod you down (you're lucky I don't have mod points right now).
Nothing is free

You mean people STILL use IE, once they've been to Slashdot?
Apparently, they still do.
Give him a real challenge: ask him questions from Wikipedia. Encarta doesn't have half the information that Wikipedia has.
The movie also had nothing to do with the game. That was the real problem.
That means no commercials because there is nothing to pay for?
Open source is free as in speech, not free as in beer. So in all likelyhood there will be commercials.

Sage for Mozilla Firefox seems better than RssReader to me.
I mean, the thing is only going to appeal to pregnant women and George W Bush supporters ...
You forgot neo-nazis.
But just for the record, I think smoking is a vile nasty habbit.
Nasty habbitses, stealing my precious lungs.

What about the third parties? It's only fair to give them a chance to compete with the big guys.

How about something that prevents it?

Can't find the damn thing anyway.
Have you tried using Google?

Libertarian? A lot of us hackers (including myself) are liberals. Hacking is non-partisan.

The problem you're thinking of is commonly referred to as the uncanny valley.
