Opensource is not used to make money, open source is a way to share ideas, methodologies to other people the way science works. Science does not make much money in the research and development stage. It only makes money when science can make a product. But it is true that complex software projects need money, and if you wan to make money off a complex software project it is better to make it a prodcut and not release the source. I mean if cisco released the source of there IOS, what do you think would happen there would be like a million Cisco IOS running knock off products.
But if you want to use OpenSouce to make your bread and butter go and work for a big company that needs some one who is knowledgeable in it. Or provide a service with it or solution. But a big project in a developed nation it is hard.
The Appal has tight control over there hardware. Windows works on everything from "Alienware" ( from Aliens ??) to Ling-Tsing-Tsao Computer System. But the most important question is to ask is why is there such a need for auxillary programs like, Anti-Virus, firewall and spyware blocker.
I mean the popularity of windows has caused all these exploits. But how do you know they won't happen under Mac OSX, Linux etc... is it because they are not as popular ? Or is it harder to write spyware/viruses for these systems ? Also I think all modern opertaing systems should come with a firewall, it took Microsoft years to come up with a firewall for their systems. This is unacceptable..
Open LDAP was hard for me to set up, I finally joined forces with an old sysdamin. Even with her old ways she finally managed to convert NIS over to LDAP and promote it to Linux, Windows, Mac OSX and SGI. I about the time she got the SGI's working said, " So long Alice.." and ran west ward on the continental us.
LDAP was a nightmare it, it was really nightmarish for the ADD young sys admins. I know at a company that I was looking into was using a verison of LDAP for the whole company's email, security to log into computers, smb mounted drives. LDAP is good if you know how to set it up but it must have an age filter.
But I never have used Netscape Directory but I have heard about it from my NYC buds who say it kicks ass and you get big booty with it.:)
I was happy to see the Apu trilogy on the list, an amazingly made film by a director far ahead of his time. I am suprised to see Sherlock Jr, on it. Maybe it was a good movie ? But I am suprised to see the lack of the Bicycle Theif and extrodinarily well made and highly influential film of the time. Suprised to see Blade Runner. But the 2nd to last scene of Blade Runner really touches me to this day when the cyborg/villan dies in the rain as in a sort of cleansing of his soul, or rather reincarnation of some sort.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams... glitter in the dark near Tanhauser Gate. All those... moments will be lost... in time, like tears... in rain. Time... to die. Roy Batty Blade Runner
Ok you are right it is Appal that makes the iPod, and a lot of the basement crowd has picked it up. You want to see the popularity of the iPod go check out the East Coast where New York City is. Where I live in the NordeLand of America there ain't that much iPod ness except at work.
I have the cheapest iPod. I don't find happiness in goods. I needed one so it works under Linux ( gtkpod). Also this was the chepeast for the most ammount of storage. Also I don't take good care of my electronics so something that I could take mountain biking and camping for 4 days with out charge.
But the iPod has caught on but it costs close to $200 to get it to integrate with your car. I mean the cost is just so high out there. I mean for the guy who wants to put it in his babies room why doesn't he just by a Roku or one of the applicances that can access your computer's HDD using smb or nfs. The next thing apple is going to make is going to be a lil' device with a remote control that interfaces with your Mac/PC and it acts like a player for your 60GB music collection.
Anyway we guys at Slashdot think too much about iPods and Appal gaining control and buying Ikea furniture. There are better and much more deeper stories out there that affect our society. Where's the slashdot story about censorship of the media and the curent administration and the "War"/Fighting in Iraq and why the body counts don't match up on different news papers.
What happens if someone invets feet that can put these shoes on and then these feet can get on a treadmill. The couch potatoes don't need shoes they need drugs that will want them to go out there and run.
I don't know but doing a backward compaitability on the xbox is a lot of hard work. Different architecture, different GPUs.. don't like the idea... but. There is always the blue screen of death. You guys should check out the gamespot.com E3 coverage. You can use bugmenot.com to login for free and take a look at the Sony Press Conference. Also it is a windows media stream, sorry *NIX guys. The stream is about 1 hour 50 mins long. It shows all the new games and tons of presentations. Lot of stuff about capturing new markets but the PS3 console looks amazing. http://www.gamespot.com/e3/e3live.html
The Cell processor is IBM's jewel, it might be the single killer against the x86 market. Not to mention that the Cell processor in PS3 is revision 3 while the one in the xbox is revision 2. The new cell processor is gonna knock the socks of all you folks. Trust me:)
Another thing is that 7 controllers that run Blue Tooth, I don't get it either. But the main thing is that games will be more and more interactive. But the Final Fantasy games out there look amazing but beyond that the Gran Turismo games are also kick ass (please cars flip over...please ) But the Tekken for PS3 was an amazing intro. You could see Jin's muscles and sweat and then the heat rising from his body and with the punch you could see sweat fly from his fists. There was another game a FPS that was amazing where marines come in through the sky and fight on the ground urban warfare style. I don't know how much of it are rendered movies and how much is real time work but the Unreal PS3 engine was amazing, it really was the explosions with the rockets and the smoke. But beyond that they had the CEO of EA come in ( yeah I know he didn't pay overtime ) and brought in Fight Night, that was great with the facial expressions of the boxers at every punch I just can imagine Rockstar Games' new GTA will definately be something. And also there are tons of new API's in the Nvidia GFX processor subsystem that have tons of stuff, like transparency and skin diffusion, water refraction. Amazing stuff. Xbox to be cool had to come on MTV, Sony being classy just went to E3 and showed who's who what there lil box can do. But over all whole press conference was kick ass, marketing venture yes. But the xbox360 on MTV was so.... teenager oriented that the PS3 is for bigboys, and the lil'boys. Sony was cool and professional while the Xbox 360 was like in your face kind of advertisement. End result xbox360 looks good PS3 looks kickass, kungfu punch, matrix lobby scene better. Also the PSP using 802.11 can become an auxillary input into the PS3 ( huh, why what do they want us to buy everything that Sony has to offer or what?? ). But the dual HD output is great, and it also takes VGA:) . And it is backward compatiable with PS, PS2 etc. But the estiemated price of the PS3 is $250 for just the gaming rig and $500 for the works. But definately they will sell there console for a loss. And make money on the games. Looking at the way the PSP sold I wouldn't be suprised it would sell for US$300. Also our beloved Hedijo Kojima of MGS showed up, may the Lord Bless his soul, yes there is going to be a MGS for the PS3. The xbox 360 has major major competiton. Cell technology puts them on the same playing field including the Nintendo Revolution. What makes them different are the games they have to offer. Even with life like reality in the end it is the simple thrill of Pong and Pacman and Mario Bros. that makes us want to play more and more games. Frag away, Drive away, Super Combo away and what ever Final Fantasy does...
Gumstix are nice but I have not found anything useful for it, bought mine did some devel work, and then sold it on ebay.
PS The PS3 coverage at E3 rocks, where is the coverage on that...
The black of space is amazing, but it is great to see that you can do this with a few items that people can find at most stores.
Yeah the Helium is pretty expensive, but definately a lot of fun... Especially if you inhale a lot
Great site, got slashdotted next time make a torrent of the site:)
-A321..
We really don't know what your network, servers or desktops look like. I know that Sharp in the US has a large installtion of Slackware based servers. IBM uses Linux, and so do a lot of universities
I know that the SuSe Enterprise edition is really great and you can use a local repository for all the updates or use another site etc...
Let's say you ahve 20% servers and 70% dekstops and 10% laptops.
The servers can be updated by using something called CSM which can run comnads and do installs etc. It uses ssh to connect to the machine and send the commnads etc.. Or you can write your own tool using perl or bash or python.
Now for desktops you can have some sort of network install image and everytime you need to update them you can have them copy the image from the server to the local machine, or use scripting to set up or use some sort of cron set of jobs to check if they are updated available on an nfs mounted disk ( shared file system ) and install the packages.
And laptops can be doen on a per user basis or have scripts that check if they are on the site lan and if they are run a script for updates and backups. Etc...
In college I used to admin about 35 servers and 80 desktops and 40 latops and all of them ran Linux. Servers and desktops would get backed up every night and updated only when there was a critical fix using a specific perl script on an NFS moutned disk.
And then there was the special / specific apps directory that was nfs mounted and was updated by hand etc.
And the 40 laptops would all check when they were plugged in if they were on the site lan, needed and update and then they would update themselves. Now obviously all this was not secure, you can run any mallicious code if you code write to the common nfs server that held the repository and the scripts etc...
I would say if you have a very big installation 1000+ computers I would reccomend you use a commercial software that does this sort of work.
If you are small about 100 computers you can use an in house set of scripts ( get those students to write something ) or buy a commercial application.
Over all there are many ways to do this sort of task the main thing is to have a good idea and knowledge of everything that is required. Then and only then do you design it. I mean you can do the whole thing for less than what you are doing now. If you have a good set of script writers you can do a lot of neat stuff. If you could give a better representation of the services and the type of computers you have things can be a lot of easier. Updating FOSS is the easy part making it all work nicely and integrating is the true essence of insanity:)
I was reading I found out that the PS2 emmulates PS1 games. And they will do that for the PS3, that it will emmulate PS2 games.
The Revolution will be PPC based so no problem there and it will have the same grpahics card base.
But the Xbox360 is able to run the x86 based games etc, but the games are made to work on the NVIDIA graphics card chipsets and not on the ATI chipsets so thus it can cause a lot of problems running the xbox-1 games on the xbox 360 due to the major graphic card change. The PPC chip should be powerful to handle the x86 instruction emmulation.
In the end it comes down to the games, the games are what makes and breaks a system.
The reaso there are no no Linux laptops in America is due to the wierd FCC rules with the wireless ethernet cards.
Those cards are damn powerful and not only restricted on teh 2.4 Ghz bandwidth etc..
That could be a reason.
??
Any comments ?
Yes truly,
! you have an opertaing system and a set of applications that can be attacked by mallicious code.
Thus either you can
1) remove the mallicious code that comes in and attacks your apps and os etc..
2) have fix packs, protection or anti-virus software that protects the comptuer against loss of data.
This is another way to milk the market.
Everyone should have motorcycles and have less cars. Even though motorcycles are less efficient they take a lot less petrol/gasoline to run.
People in America worry about cars, ther are so many cars here.
Let's say there are 300 Million people in this coutry. Out of which 20% own cars and 80% own more than one car. And on average each car gives 20 mpg, and each person drives there car 20 miles round trip to work 5 days a week.
So just in a week we have
300x10^6x0.2= 60x10^6 people own cars
60x10^6*0.8*2=96*10^6 cars.
98*10^6*20miles*5days/20mpg=490 MILLION Gallons of petrol/gasoline.
No wonder gas prices are high, just make people live closer and ride motorcycles. Over all less gas.
Anyway all the high gas prices are due to the Gentoo guys who live in their parents' basements and ride there SUV's to their Gentoo meetings..... Ok maybe not....
But a lot of these high gas prices are due to speculation of how certain crude oil depedent companies due etc. and how the big boys in the market play.
But my next secondary mode of transportation is a hybrid ( once i figure out how to get rid of my mom's SUV... shoot they know I use Gentoo... ) and primary is always the chick mobile my bicycle ( the pedal love...you can come too )
Congrats

But BSD is well welcomed, I run BSD on my laptop but after some stand offs it is one of the most nicest systems I have used.

PS Apple OSX is not BSD, it is a lot like your lil'sister who gets involved with the wrong type of guy in the adult industry.

Why didn't she talk about the other mp3/digital music players.
I jsut think that article was just badly written by a person with small and short vision.
I would say the iPod sucks becasue there is no native Linux support for it. But I am not happy with that answer...
Or what about all the other online stores that don't have support for iTunes on my AIX workstation I will be pissed.
She's arguing for the sake of argument. That's no good...

I bet these guys will get linux to work on the PSP next, that would be just swell.
But they should make game hardware that is open and people can install what they want on it. Thus have a great game system and also a great mini computer that can do other small things such as read email or maybe mount remote file systems. Well all this is great congrats guys.
A tin of Skoal for eveyone of you:)
Yes but the introduction of new theories should be allowed but to have an objective basis in teaching it is very much required in our day and age. But the interesting thing would be to note in which communities these sort of ideas pop up. Like do they show up in rural, inner city, urban etc... and maybe see the influences that cause such ideas to spawn.
Anyway students should be given heads up why ID is chosen over evolution etc..
I hate to bring up a sore topic, there are also other religions participating in American society, what about the Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Jains, Bhuddists and many other religions that are not based on the Bible? What do these groups have to say and why don't they stand up against the topic of evolution ?
The reason the intelligent design ( ID ) took place was because it showed lower recruitments in the church after these people graduated High School and thus these wackos thought to teach these kids this sort of mumbo-jumbo. It is pretty messed up to teach kids religious beliefs in school, what happens there was another person in that school that was not of the same religion? Now it gets kind of sticky. Long story cut short, a theory is a theory so is ID and so is God and so is religion and if you start giving different weights to them then you are really screwing the balance of education.
Also they don't teach this sort of crap in other countries, no wonder the whole world thinks of us as red-necks and gun carrying freaks that shoot dark african males.

I would say the iPod sucks becasue there is no native Linux support for it. But I am not happy with that answer... Or what about all the other online stores that don't have support for iTunes on my AIX workstation I will be pissed. She's arguing for the sake of argument. That's no good... -A
I bet these guys will get linux to work on the PSP next, that would be just swell. But they should make game hardware that is open and people can install what they want on it. Thus have a great game system and also a great mini computer that can do other small things such as read email or maybe mount remote file systems. Well all this is great congrats guys. A tin of Skoal for eveyone of you :)
This only works on windows, that is what the webpage says, but there must be one for others using firefox on other platforms
There is no more innocence.
