"Get a professional to make your next playlist...." I laughed so hard then I read that the first time. After all it was their reasoning for making sure you had an FM radio in the player.
Reading between the lines I could never work out where they saying:- a) your taste in music sucks.... so you need the radio. b) we want to up sell you a mp3 player that your only going to use for the radio.
Of course with either of these does it matter if your locked into one DRMed online music store. Let's face anything you would buy sucks and your going to just listen to the radio anyway.
Yep Pippin came straight to mind as soon as i read that too.
Did Apple really release the Pippin? Wasn't it produced by them then branded and released by someone else?
That wasn't a good era for Apple design I can remember alot of produces from that time that seemed like they had a good idea behind driving them but got a good beating from the fugly stick before production.
Remember thou you have to add GST to that, in much the same way some states in the us have to add sales taxes. That puts it more in the 1.40 to 1.50 range.
Given the demand for PowerPC and POWER Architecture Chips of Late (Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo,...) it would seem odd for Apple to move away from an platform they have put so much work into developing with their partners on this.
If Apple do move away from IBM chips it would likely be for the reinvigourated Motorola Spin-off Freescale PowerPC chips. Who already make some of the G4 chips anyway.
The interesting part of such a rumor could be AMD who yes make "Intel-Compatiable" chips, don't they use a POWER core with hardware translation layer to support x86 instructions?
Maybe the rumor (or wild speculation if you prefer) should read that Apple is in talks to get a third company producing PowerPC chips.
Heh, who knows - maybe Apple will release some sort of Spotlight -> Automator transition that allows people to use spotlight queries to actually reorganize their data permanently, not smart folder this and query that, but actually reorganize data in the filesystem based on certain things (kind of like how iTunes manages the folders in its library folder.)
No maybe about it, read the Automator Page and it will tell you that Workflows can have spotlight searchs as actions to find the files to act on. I guess now all I need is a workflow called each night to put away any file I've left on the desktop more than a week
Moggy -the media edition or embeded systems , after they buy out TiVo and release a set top box. No doudt it will have a really quiet fan control system that means the fans sound like purring when it gets to warm, and they kick into high gear.
I think you'll find they have already tried to patent the idea of their new mouse type. (sorry can't find the link it was maybe 12 months ago)
A really simple idea put another optical sensor looking at the shell of the mouse. aimed at a little window at the front.
Scroll and pan based on finger movement in front of the window.
I guess they could also do left button and rigth button based on your finger position when the single button clicks.
This seems more in line with Apple design aim to make every design as clean as possible.
Well yes light won't decrease the amount of dirt trafficed in to a space.
It will effect the growth of mold and bacteria in the space, there are very few of these "nasties" that will survive even low levels of Natural light.
Although it's the UV content will do most the work. Natural light still can be effective with filtered uv levels. It has a fuller and constitant range of the light spectrum, where electrical light tends to have spikes in the light spectrum that mix to form something like white light.
These Existing Solar Tube of systems are great for Houses, but they lose a lot of light per metre so there value in using them to pipe light to the lower floor of even a two storey house is limited. also they lack flexibility as the collector needs to basically be above the area the light is wanted.
The System from the article is not that new either, the basic idea has been around for a while. Although the cost of the Optic Fibre (vs. under priced electric power) has always been a factor limiting the deployment of systems such as the one in the article.
The Advantage of and Optic Fibre System is that optic fibre can carry light at much lower loss levels per metre. This means a fibre system is good for multi-storey work, like commercial office buildings.
Where we are trying to push the light 7-8m(21-26ft) horizontally into the building. Vertically allow say +3m(10-12ft) per floor. In an 8 storey building you need to be able to push light around 40m and around many corners.
An the advantages of using natural light are more than just the power saving. Using Natural light can vastly improve the health of the building. Enclosed areas like fire stairs, toilets, plant rooms will all stay cleaner if lit with natural light.
It's one of those supply and demand problems.
Demand for moving pictures has far surpassed the talent required to make it good.
So now we have the "movie business" and "art cinema" is difference is mostly one is a business that's M.O. is to reap the rewards of people still being amused and delighted by the technology of flashing still images at 24 frames per second to trick them in to thinking its moving (both emotionally and virtually). A market driven by teenagers who will see anything cause the scope for social gathering is otherwise limited, and various other groups restricted in social contact.
The business is about the wizz bang of effects and building the perception that the technology is out of reach, by spending more money on advertising, stars and premieres than the modern cost of production.
So if you find the business lifeless, and just a bit to pretty and neat, then the easiest thing to do is find the little cinemas that shows the art. Join their Club, go to short film festivals. If you really want to be challenged go to things like Gay film festivals or festivals of other minority groups.
If there isn't one in your local area, talk to one of the cafe owners, pick a dead time, and start your own short film festival and if you don't think that will make a difference check out.

Which started the same way, but got to big it took over the street, and didn't stop there.
After all the cost to display has dropped along with the production.
The authoring tools arguement doesn't really follow. Have a look at the games available for the Mac, and then look at the number of game studios that uses mac's for 80-90% of game development, many of which never release the games developed on Mac's for that platform.
How about a @Home application? But in this case to collect data not process. If you could get all the new Powerbooks to sign up to the network, next time there is an earth quake in the area it would record the shaking.
Might be really interesting to model how the energy waves flow if you could get enough data at various point locations. just realised it may need a gps to any value.
Better still convince a friend too hack their mini as discribed. Steal the case from their mini. turn that into firewire enclosure. Have the same thing in pretty mini style.
Our architecture firm runs a central server on a G4 tower that's spec is lower than mini Mac, and does so very well.
We only have 20 people in the office, using file server (largish CAD files saved back to the server every five minutes), good size data base, mail, internal web sites for mail, calanders, project photos...
I would imagine that a mini or two would also handle the job of a server for small office or home network just as well.
Even cooler if you could raid the mini's over firewire then keep the ethernet for general network access.
If you have a Family and or Friends (i know this is/. so maybe not) and you find the iMac doesn't suit your needs in 3 years, then no doudt one of those family and friend type people will have use for it.
A Happy exchange of love, money and other services may even be arranged.
Where as the putting the G5 into the imac was only discribe as an interesting thermal challange 3 months before it was released.
I guess "the mother of all theraml challenges" should be say 6 to 12 months lead time.

As an Apple fan, therefore from a world that is user-centric design, it would make sense to me too.
So a better option to Nuclear might be those Solar Stack Power Generators. as seen in wired., 00.html/
http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,66694
After all its a big funnel to at least the mid-atmosphere, and it produces power that could be used to make the ozone.
Lets not forget.

First Of All it's Not Apples' AAC.
To be fair apple do own the 'Fairplay' DRM envelope they use to protect content recorded in AAC.
AAC is owned by the Dolby Group.
The device does support WMA which of cause in both non DRM and DRM versions is owned by by Microsoft.
i would have said...
"anyone whos buy anything other than PowerPC for a laptop has no brains."

Seeing you want to you is as a server, no need for the GUI.
Salling Clicker to turn your bluetooth mobile into a Terminal Window.

You would have to say this is a win for SPF, greylisting and the other methods which push for proper mail sending behaviour.
Maybe the Reviewer didn't ever need to refer to the help files.
After all how good can they be if you don't need the look at them.
