Actually Intel never had a 586, iirc Cyrix and maybe AMD did, but intel came up with the pentium. If they'd continued with the numbering scheme would have been 585.95551 anyway.

When later Intel pushed "Pentium", AMD also forgot numbers and went with Athlon.

Actually, they came up with the K6, about the same time as Pentium MMX. Then Intel came up with the Pentium II, so AMD had a k6-2. Then about the time of the Pentium III, AMD came up with a k6-3 which was so fast it was undercutting their new Athlon range due to its large cache, so they shelved it, which was a great shame as it was one of the fastest socket 7 chips ever made.

Intel's got Celeron, AMD got Duron (later Sempron)

I find it amusing when a new, super fast architecture comes out thats going to blow away everything else. So then instead of continuing to make the older range for the budget end of the market, they make a retarded version of the new chip, because there isn't actually that much difference in speed when all things like cache are equal. Is the cache the expensive bit in modern procesors or what?
