The examples that you give - cleaning, fixing refigerator, getting from point A to point B, are all useful things that you somehow HAVE to do. You don't do them for your own enjoyment. Of course, when you're talking about laundry, paying someone else to do it means saving time for yourself.
Now, painting a Star Wars picture on a computer can't possibly qualify as a useful task. The reason people do it is for their own enjoyment. A more valid comparison would be paying somebody to put together a model of a F-19 plane to put on your desk.
Now, whether it's stupid to do so is another argument entirely - you can argue both points. But you can't compare it to work.

How can you write a review without finishing the game? What if there's a bug towards the end that makes the game entirely unplayable? Or the plot suddenly takes turn for the worse and it just becomes boring. There's been plenty of games that are very interesting in the beginning, and then just lose steam or you run out of interesting things to do.
You're absolutely right. I still play UFO, Might and Magic 3-5, Betrayal at Krondor, Sim City 2000, original Price of Persia, Star Control 2, and many others... Why? Because they are awesome games! Flashy graphics are only secondary. They are a vehicle to HELP suspend your reality and enter the world of imagination.
You don't really NEED them to accomplish the above. In fact, there are great games that can be played with no graphics at all - Zork, for example.
Please. How this got modded informative is beyond me. I'll buy a console when a game like Heroes of Might and Magic, Civilization or Baldur's Gate comes out for it...
I have to say the parent is 100% correct. Of course, now it's not like before - most smart people do everything they can to leave (I did), and the values in the society shifted a lot to 'whoever has more money'. But when I was growing up (90's), the society still had those values. In school, smart people were respected and on top of the social ladder.
Either way, if you want to use your landline anywhere in town (mountains and buildings aside)
That means it doesn't work inside any building, including your own apartment. Sorry, doesn't work for me.
Wow. You people are disgusting

Completely ignoring the review, and focusing only on how the book is packaged (without even seeing it yourselves). Based on author's description of HOW THE BOOK LOOKS, you concluded that it's aimed at the MTV-generation, putting style over content.
For some reason, most geeks think that anything that looks good is somehow 'below' them. That's why there hasn't been a good-looking Linux desktop GUI yet... Have any of you ever thought that if something LOOKED good, there might, just might be something worthy under the cover too?
... which is, of course, Dilbert, updates daily, 7 times a day, for the past few years... There isn't a webcomic out there that could compare to its greatness.
In general, women's logic is very different from male logic. I'm not saying women have no logic whatsoever, that wouldn't be true, it's just most of the times their logic is completely opposite from men's. I think anyone who ever has to deal with women on a regular basis would agree.
Computer science is built on male logic. It was invented by men, practiced by men, and perfected by men. One of the reasons I love it is because EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE (to me, as a male). At the same time, everything about women DOESN'T make sense. Therefore, women have a hard time understanding, loving and doing good at computer science.
... it might not be a good idea to spew venom and arrogance from almost every sentence.
However, if you're happy with things currently, go back to your pap-fed, TV-induced brain-numbing stupor, and smile at the nice pretty pictures, the short snappy soundbites, and cower in fear at the Fox news alerts, and feel free not to engage.
(The instructions are deliberately vague. A sort of aptitude test, if you will.)
After reading crap like that, I can't imagine any normal person joining this... only the types bearing strong resemblance to Jimmy Fallon's IT guy character from Saturday Night Live...
This is part of [Eidos's] move to consolidate and strengthen its technical and management capabilities into a smaller number of studios which are capable of scaling up in order to meet the competitive challenges that lie ahead, particularly in anticipation of next-generation technologies and platforms
This sharply reminds me of Michael T. Suit (suit without a man inside) from Dilbert...

Very good point. After years and years spent in 'pursuit of knowledge', I'm coming to the same conclusions myself.

metrosexual ... women I'm trying to charm
C'mon, let's be realistic here. Metrosexual is the same thing as homosexual. You're trying to charm GUYS.
... Star Control 2. THE best story and gameplay. There is an open source Windows remake, btw: http://sc2.sourceforge.net/
Does it grow longer the more dots it eats?

When you get a little bit more experience with women, come talk to me about logic.

Wow, it's been a while since I've seen one of those.. back in Usenet days, I must say.
How the above was modded up is beyond me.
If he wanted to write his own software, I don't think he would've asked the question, no?
The parent was not asking how, or what's the best way. He was asking WHY should he switch to Linux.
