  2. With the flamewars in mind on Linux, to be (Like Microsoft) or Not to be? · · Score: 3, Informative

I believe that the main reasons that people have choosen linux over microsoft is the same reason I have, choice. With linux we have the ability to make it appear and work how we want it to, without having to apply third party applications just to provide basic security and functionality. If you like the way windows runs and acts, use it. If you like tweaking your system to become an extension of your personality then I would suggest Linux. Because what it all boils down to is the ability to choose.

With iTunes the application is free to download and use. But is there money to be made? Yes. By users purchasing the music they want online.. This same model is being used here, the core of the application is free, but content costs. This is where they will make money, not in the application itself but in the content individuals puchase. The "tell-ware" model is mainly to get the word out on the product, for those who perhaps do not read Slashdot.

  6. Branding on Apple To Unveil iPod Cellphone Next Week? · · Score: 4, Insightful

It's not really a matter of new technology, but rather a matter of branding. The Apple iTunes name sells. This behavior is being done by many corporations. Virgin started it along with 7-eleven. Next to appear on the scene is Disney Mobile (not making this up). Names sell, so individuals who are dedicated to Apple and it's products will most likley purchase this type of phone/service.

  9. The cycle of students on What is the Tech Jobs Situation in Late 2004? · · Score: 5, Insightful

Back in the 90's eveyone was hearing on the news and from campuses that the best (read as: highest paying) jobs were in the computer sector. They flooded the market. Now over the past 3-5 years the new students have been hearing "don't go into that people are losing their jobs to overseas" so they choose a different field. Thus eventually creating a need for more workers. So in turn when the salaries increase again and the overall need for workers increase once again there will be a surplus of workers and not enough jobs. Hopefully the students in the colleges now are in their fields because they want to do it and not because it will make them 100K a year after graduation. This way you get the person who loves what they do.
