I think all of this ultimately gets to Nintendo's point. Microsoft and Sony went after "gamers" and Nintendo went after everyone else. Guess which market is larger?
Guess which market spends more money on videogames?
Human interface is just as much a communication format as is a document format. Having different GUI's is the human equivelent of different file formats.
Aside from the fact that most Human Interfaces are fairly compatible with Humans.
That may be the case in Australia (based on your au TLD), I can't say for sure, but it's definitely not the case in the U.S
Unfortunatewy, wiv our countwy's tongue wedged firmwy up your countwy's backside, if it's the case in the US, it's the case in Austwawia - thanks to the Fwee Twade Agweement.
P.S. - The taste isn't quite as nice as we were pwomised.
Like the gun-control debate, comparing crime statistics across nations is notoriously prone to confirmation bias.
Does this mean the study you cited above linking porn to desensitisation towards rape really only applies to the country in which it was performed (I'm assuming the US)? That would make a bit more sense, though still very little.
MTASC doesn't support actionscript 3. Haxe does support actoinscript 3
The free Flex SDKincludes an AS3 compiler and is being open-sourced. Did you even read the article?
MP3 is the only audio codec that's supported by flash, and the mpegla licensing terms make it illegal to distribute MP3 decoders in large numbers for free, without paying royalties.
You don't distribute the decoder - Adobe does. They pay the royalties. MP3 is the standard - deal with it.
The Version 2 Components are not freely available.
From the FAQ:
Adobe plans to release all of the components of the Flex SDK needed to create Flex applications, including the Java source code for the ActionScript and MXML compilers, the ActionScript debugger, and the ActionScript libraries that make up the core Flex framework
Again, did you read the article?
Summary: flash is a disaster if you want to write OSS using an OSS toolchain.
Summary: you're completely ignorant. We've been developing OSS Flash applications using a completely OSS toolchain for years now. The ONLY thing that isn't OSS is the player that our applications run in. And now, we can also include OSS Flex development. This is a good thing.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the game's inventor and the one person who unquestionably knows the origins of the name he chose, has repeatedly affirmed that he used the word "donkey" to convey a sense of stubbornness and the name "Kong" to invoke the image of a gorilla.
Just wanted to say thanks for the insightful post. You're already at +5 Informative, but if I had mod points I'd probably use them anyway.:)
I'm a pretty hardcore gamer, but I haven't bothered with any MMOGs since the Ultima Online beta test for the very reasons you illustrate.
When you see an MMORPG that can stand on the merits of its actual game play and not rely on hopeless addiction to watching stats slowly tick up, you will be seeing the first TRUE second generation MMORPG...
And that's why multimedia designers & developers should have at least 2GB RAM these days. It's not uncommon for me to be running Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Eclipse, and several browsers at once - and switching between them regularly enough that it doesn't make sense to close any one of them down. RAM is by far my most valuable resource, well above CPU speed, HDD speed/size etc. If your PC is slowing down due to lack of RAM, buy more!

Ok, so after searching Google for acronyms matching RMT, I worked out that in this context it means "Real Money Transfer" or "Real Money Trading", but seriously... and I normally can't stand posts that bitch about the editors... but seriously... and I'm usually happy to look up any acronym that I SHOULD know about, unless it is really FUCKING obscure... but SERIOUSLY... WOULD IT FUCKING TAKE YOU SLASHDOT EDITORS TWO SECONDS TO EXPLAIN WHAT THE FUCK RMT MEANS?!?!?
Flash wasn't a real application development environment back then. It has been for the last 2 years, and is now more than ever.
You shouldn't have used Flash for your RIA back then. You can now, if you want.
It's not Adobe's fault that your company used the wrong tool for the job, or that you got locked-in. It's the fault of whoever in your company made that decision.
It seems to me that you're bitter about an entire platform/company, just because it was used for the wrong purpose. What a pathetic attitude. You don't like Flash, so don't use it. But don't make ignorant blanket statements in an attempt to deter others from using the technology when it might very well be the best tool their purposes. If dealing with a poorly written legacy Flash application is such a bother for you, then get another fucking job.
Your post would have been insightful around 7 years ago. Nothing you have said is true today.
It is almost entirely client-side code...
One of the main points of RIAs is to move code over to the client so that server requests are only made when they are needed. How much code executes on the client or server is entirely up to the developer(s).
The stuff that executes server-side has to go through the "Flash gateway servlet"...
That is just wrong. Flash has a multitude of options for server-side connectivity.
You can't separate the ActionScript into separate files...
That hasn't been the case since Flash 5. We're at version 9 now. In fact, Actionscript 3 (FP9) classes MUST be in separate external files. You can compile a SWF file without even needing an FLA. If Flash developers are putting binaries in VCS then that's their fault, not Flash's.
Seriously, it's like your post came straight from the year 1999. You obviously know very little about Flash these days. Please stop pretending to.
Guess which market spends more money on videogames?
Could you be more precise?

How appropriate, you fight like a cow.
And you wonder why we deride you and your country? Here's a tip - it's because of fucked-up attitudes like that.

Sony is responsible. Zonk is just the messenger.
