  1. Re:OS means nothing on Why Aren't People Abandoning Windows For Linux? (slashgear.com) · · Score: 1

Having done tech support in a small business of people who are not tech savvy, routinely being asked how to dial an international phone number, or reply to an email, or send a FAX, these are not tasks that the Linux ecosystem are suited for.

and neither is windows, or even MacOS for that case, there is NO system in the world that is foolproof.

  2. why is this an HTML standard?
the standard mentions that it will increase transparancy for the user, but sure looks like a heavy price to pay.

  3. "The message is: 'We don't need you. But we are nice, so we'll take care of you.'"

but they do need us, who else is going to buy all their products/services?

a bit like when factories used to own the house you lived in, and all the stores and pubs in town were owned by the factory. you got your paycheck, but you spend (almost) everything on the services that the factory provided in your town.

  4. so is youtube-music only going to be video? will i be able to turn off video? i want to LISTEN to music, not watch it.
google music had the option to use your own music library, i guess that option is also not available anymore with youtube-music?

  5. horrible on Cord-Cutting Hits Video Games (axios.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

we'll have Google, MS, Sony, some other company (maybe Valve?), all with game-streaming services to pick from.
guess what, it will be the same horrible situation we have now with video streaming.
some services will have game x, which is not available anywhere else, gaming company y will end it's contract with service z and from one day to the next all those games will be gone (oh, but they will be available from service w or you know, or own service because we want in on the action!).
you can also bet that all these streaming services will have their own studios only making games that will be available on their own service.

  10. what is wrong with having a notification icon, just as android has now.
want to see what the message is, just quickly pull it down, you can even reply through the notification if you want.
but a bubble, or in worst case, multiple bubbles only get in the way.
for some reasone those things always hover just above that part of the screen that you're using/looking at.
please make this an option that can be turned off.

will it report these apps, my biggest guess is 'no', even though it should.
all this will do is create a false sense of security/privacy.

  12. Strange tasting process on Machine Learning Is Making Pesto Even More Delicious (technologyreview.com) · · Score: 4, Interesting

"The researchers tested the taste of the plants by looking for certain compounds using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry."

instead of really tasting it? it only should taste better theoretically, there aren't any real taste test results that confirm the actual taste is actually better (even though, this is a very subjective thing).

  13. even though we have no proof, i think it's becoming clear there is something to all this (where there is smoke, there is fire).
but people in the know, don't want to share what they know.

  14. All you will accomplish with such a plan is to drive up prices and make products unaffordable to many who can afford them now.

we would be going back to where we came from, when indeed everything was way more expensive, but generally lasted much longer and was easier to repair (or it was easy to find somebody who could repair it for you).

also, i don't think anybody really _needs_ airpods, compared to maybe things like a washing machine, etc. so it doesn't really matter that those things would be expensive (btw, i find them already expensive enough not to want them anyway).

  17. turn it all off on The Dangers of Sharing Your Screen With Co-Workers (seattletimes.com) · · Score: 1

yes, it's annoying as hell, popups everywhere, drives me nuts, it even worse as there are also sound notifications, so you don't only get popups with personal stuff in them, but there are pings and poofs and jingles during the whole presentation as well.

that is the reason i turn off all those things, even if i'm not presenting i don't want to know every mail that comes in, or who comes on/offline and that they are IM'ing me etc etc.

works very well, except for... damn patch-reboot popups :|
    now those are annoying.

for the people who are going to point out that you can schedule those things, i can not. the company policy is very strict and once patch-reboot is required a popup will show giving you 30 minutes to save/quit all your stuff, if you pass that limit your computer will reboot automatically immediatly.

  21. "But the assessment cited "underlying defects" in the company's software engineering and cybersecurity processes"

  22. people have to learn that any piece of closed source software cannot be trusted.
in case of drivers this is even more so, whatever the design of the OS might be, even if the OS itself is fully OSS, a closed driver takes all those advantages go away.

  23. great idea, most of the time i don't want a receipt, i'm sure a lot of people don't really need one. but if you do, you can ask and still get it.
but after seeing those twitter posts and having a good laugh, there should also be some limit put on the size of receipts as well. even just one printed CVS receipt is 99% waste.

if you look at the scale of priorities, this one is pretty low i would assume, and those same resources probably would have benefitted the ones higher up the scale much more.
