  1. Microsoft isn't the only guilty party... on Virtual Earth 3D Beta Launched · · Score: 1

This "opt-out" strategy is not unique to Microsoft. Our holier than thou Google does the same thing with their toolbar. Adobe does it with their reader software and !GASP! until recently Apple tried the same thing by making it rather difficult to find their Quicktime standalone installer void of iTunes. So to bash Microsoft alone on this is unfair. It annoys me too but I am shocked that any person reading Slashdot just blindly accepts program defaults when installing software.

I did as you mentioned above. I had read about the bannings for the HD checksums. Fortunately I was able to find a felow that modded Xbox's for a private school with no broadband access. He would extract the EEPROM from somewhere (over my head) and "lend" it to others on the internet. The transaction was based solely on the faith that the particular xbox the EEPROM was extracted from would never be connected to the internet. Anyway, it worked for me and to this date I haven't had any problems. This isn't terribly difficult with the right research...I consider myself pretty technically competent but I'm no programmer or code junkie. I do networks and desktop support. Fun stuff though!!

  8. Too bad they left the controller alone... on PS3 Details From Sony Game Day · · Score: 1
Personally one of the major shortcomings with the PS3 is the fact that they've used the same controller (the layout at least) on their last three systems. It's nice they've added "triggers" but from what I've read they are awkward to use. The motion sensing seems like an afterthought to me. I used to love Sony's controller but as games started adopting the analog sticks the flaw in the Sony design began to show itself. Their placement makes it difficult to accurately and quickly transistion from left to right. You have to "extend" your thumb to make this motion (very important in driving games especially). With the 360 controller and the old S model, the left to right action is better aligned with your thumbs range of mobility. Rather than "extending" your thumb you simply move it left and right. I noticed this when I made the switch from Gran Turismo 4 to PGR. I loathed the analog on GT4 because I couldn't input fast enough. When I picked up the XBOX it just worked.

Sony's controllers now feel very awkward when placed in my hands almost to the point of making me now invest in a PS3. No one uses the D-pad anymore, save for some fighting games, as their primary. Move the analog to a more natural position.

Funny, I had a buddy mention this exact thing the other day when I tried a racing game on my computer with the 360 controller. He mentioned he could never use the analogs with GT4 but never fully understood why.

Bottom line...it seem's rather lazy and short-sighted IMO to have been so stagnant with the controller. I know, I've thought about this too much but it just baffles me.

I'm not saying it's better than Firefox but I think people would really learn to like it if they gave it some time (I know, the interface is a bit wacky and things are hard to find at first but those growing pains go away quickly).

I was initially interested in a UMPC but I realized I didn't need all the features and added cost...>$1000. The only reason I considered a UMPC over a video iPod was for occasional internet access. With the 604 Wifi I get everything I wanted in a smaller, lighter, more power efficient product. I just wish they would announce a release date and offer it with a larger hard drive.

I do like the iPod's size but my primary use would be in the car or visiting a friends house, or my bedroom for that matter (much lighter than a laptop). I guess if you were walking around a campus or just plain need something that will comfortably fit in your pocket the iPod or similar product is for you.

I used to think like you but now I see I was wrong. Company's who offer long warranties do so, primarily, because they believe their product is good enough to last that long. That's why most electronics come with a 90 day warranty...they don't have faith in the product and don't want to be financially liable to replace the product in a year or two or three, etc. If Seagate is offering a 5 year warranty that shows me they have the confidence that their device will last beyond that five years. Or, it could be a clever marketing ploy and I'm dumb. I think it's a sad state the electronics industry is in when the average warranty length is only 90 days. Could you imagine if other complex items came with such a short warranty...cars for example. Having a long warranty often implies a quality product and a company willing to stand behind you. I've blowtorched and bent a SnapOn* tool once to get into a tight spot in my engine bay. I went to my Dad's shop the next time the SnapOn guy was there, handed him my bent tool and he provided me a new one, no questions asked. That is service! It's also the type of service that will have me continue shopping with SnapOn for the rest of my tool needs.

*You get what you pay for I suppose. SnapOn is damn expensive and often times the cost of the tool doesn't outweigh the benefit I will get. For those tools I buy Craftsmen or Huskey, both available in B&M stores and come with a lifetime warranty.
