There's a big underswell push for Linux in schools happening around the UK too...
Times Educational Suppliment ran it a few weeks ago. You needed the paper version for the full article but this is a good summary and primer: http://www.tes.co.uk/2094985
Now... Can everyone who has kids in the UK start asking the teachers about this at their next school visit?
It's a pretty well known fact that if you TEACH *CHILDREN* to use Linux and not Windows from the start, it will filter up through the years and (with any luck) become the system of choice in the home too... Then the last 'bastion' will be industry... and with 1000's of up and coming children leaving schools with skills fully developed in Linux, the old excuse of 'training' kinda starts working against Microsoft. 'Cause none of the kids use it (nor want to). It's the same trick Microsoft used (Free O/S etc for schools).
Hope I haven't failed to explain in enough detail all of this, and you can all 'join the dots' and see where this might be going.
So... Start hassling your teachers NOW. I personally *am* getting involved in a new school to get all their computers on Linux from the start. When it opens in September.
If you're *serious* about wanting to see a less monopolostic computing environment, but don't know where you should put your effort in to help... This is the place... IMO
All he's trying to do is delay your decision so insted of 'must have xbox in september' you say 'I'm going to wait for the PS3 to come out too, and then decide which one to get'.
If he can do that, he's done his job...
And by what I've been hearing people say, he's suceeded. If there is a shadow of doubt come xbox's launch in your mind, he's done what he needs to do.
...we'll all suddenly proclaim it the best thing EVAR and praise Apple and say "Jobs R0x!"...
Comon... We *will* do this... Just like "solid state mp3 players iz t3h sux" until Shuffle came out (even Jobs said this - more or less) and then "solid state MP3 with no screen r0x0r$!"
Regarding making it a PVR, I suspect the problem lies in not being able to record programs AND play games at the same time leading to it's exclusion...
Imagine being a developer and having to cap proc utilisation 'just in case the player is recording Suvivor while (s)he's playing' (Which is entirely possible).
However, maybe the Sony have an answer? Have to wait and see...
Still no CONFIRMED lauch date, price, confirmation of HD DVD or Blu-Ray (Tell a lie, I think they said NO Next Gen Drive), backwards compatability, region coding, Video connectors - i.e HDMI, DVI, VGA , if a HDD is *standard* on all the consoles or optional, summaries on the various models that are supposedly going to be released, AND number of units on launch for each reigion (USA, Europe, Japan Etc).
But we got lots of pretty pictures and infomation that we can change the facia of the console... Whoopie doo!
They're 'hinting' that it's possible that they'll release the PS3 in 2005 because they want people to just get that 'shadow of a doubt' before they rush out and get an XBox2 *knowing* (supposedly) the PS3 is at least a year away.
For them, just getting your to stop for a second and consider maybe waiting for the PS3, compairing the 2 systems and *then* deciding which one to get will be enough for them...
I mean really? I played and finished Halo2 and said 'meh'...
Halo 3 (Which might have an eding - horay!) vs PS3 and Metal Gear Solid, Grand Turismo (WITH online this time), Wipeout (akin to Wipeout Pure for PSP), Final Fantasy, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc...
No-one but the die-hard fanatical xblob fanboys care... Really...
All this means is xbox2 will be $200 by the time PS3 comes out. It will make more people buy a XBLOCK2, but *not* make LESS people buy PS3s...
Lets face it, it's a fight to control DRM and the space under your TV... Nothing else...
DSO Exploit (for example - there are others!)doesn't require you to open any browser, but can launch bots into your machine.
Just the fact that you are connected to the internet is enough if you machine is unpatched.
It's not ONLY the broswer choices you make that decide if you get botted... Running an unpatched xp system without any firewall or NAT in between will get you botted...
Just using Windows XP is enough. Keep your system up to date... Or better still, keep moaning at MS for creating such a weak system that forces you to install almost 100MB and over 40 patches to become 'slightly' safer than before and still require you to install AV, FW, SB, and Firefox software just to keep it afloat... Then add a dumb (average Joe) user with Administrative rights and start your stopwatch...
I remember, back in the early 90's (1993?), Middlesex University (England) done a BSc in Games programming... About 1/2 way through the course, Nintendo and Sega (IIRC) representatives came in, and offered EVERYONE on the course jobs, which they all accepted...
The course died, Middlesex Uni didn't bother starting it up again...
I'm not going to buy a PSP until I can buy Metal Gear, Wipeout Pure, and Gran Tourismo on it... Pure's release slipped, so frankly, I couldn't care less how far they slip this launch. I'm pissed that they do it to Europe though, and include the UK in it (no PAL/NSTC excuses this time...)

How about spending £100 and geting a DS each? You can play wirelessly during lunch AND play something going home and coming to work?
:)
:) )
There's quite a few fun wireless games coming out, and if your lunch is only an hour - time to get/eat food this might me ideal
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Animal crossing/ Mariocart DS Metroid/ Advance Wars DS etc etc (Hell, even Nintendogs
I already told you lot this in the other thread!
1.5 is broken too now (apparently)
This is exactly what they want to do.

Or... Get Microsoft to pay 5c for each PC, and inject Sp2 and other 'hotfixes' onto these machines.
Job done.
I noticed you didn;'t have enough hair on you ass to post with your real UID... Fucking fanboi... back under the bridge with ya!
...we'll all suddenly proclaim it the best thing EVAR and praise Apple and say "Jobs R0x!"...

It will not be temporary... People will not be ABLE to switch to a new system under their TV's
:)
You have DRM in the village you live in?
They'll DRM and Encrypt the content, and you'll be locked in...

Then again... maybe they have a supprise for us
Just buy the music on CD's and rip it yourself as MP3...
Why is this so hard to understand?
It cost about the same as iTunes anyway...
They're basically turning this into a MMORPG...
Apart from the twich-skills and ping-dependancy, this *sounds* like a MMORPG to me and suspiciously like World of Warcraft...
Talk about 'jump on the bandwaggon'
Well? Or will you require Live to play it?
Even Microsoft can't compete against it's own product, that beat which is Windows XP Pro...
Hello... Sony... You seem to have forgotten a large portion of the F**KING planet...
Can Europe/UK have the release date, and price CONFIRMED please? We're all waiting!

Dispite this guy sounding like a nutter, I'm inclined to agree with him...
They'll never stop piracy... It's been here since copyright...
i think the reasons back then was something like "No-one finished the degree. No-one was going to".

Sign of the times I guess... Or the article is BS...
