  1. Translation on Unmaking Motorola's Q · · Score: 1

  3. Theres the rub, and there it is again! on Why Won't Dell Promote Its Linux Desktops? · · Score: 1

There are two ongoing problems with selling and marketing Linux "desktops".

#1. Support. If you stop selling the $100 piece-of-crap desktop as your "Linux product line" then you wont have so many people buying it simply because its the cheapest thing around. This causes your support issues. Not because of a learning curve, but because if they bought a $100 PC they probably havent the first clue what is in front of them, or even know what an OS is. Bringing us to #2.

#2. When you wise up and then realize that no self-respecting Linux user would buy one of those desktops, you also have to realize that if they know better than that, they probably also know well enough to just build their own for a better price and arguably better quality.

    So theres the rub.

Students have to buy their own books, transportation, pay for housing, etc etc etc, now laptops and thousand-dollar propietary software too?! Where the hell are the thousands of dollars in tuition going? For the price most students pay for tuition, the least you could do is put a desktop on the TOP of their DESK. Those wont get stolen, broken, filled with porn, spyware, etc. Especially if you put Linux on them and... god forbid.. TEACH THEM SOMETHING. Not to mention that youd be furthering education and a science, rather than padding the pockets of more corporations who are only undoubtedly going to charge even more to this enormous locked-in userbase the next year around.

  8. Re:back to the part numbers on Intel Dropping Pentium Brand · · Score: 1

What does surprise me is that they haven't come up with a better product name to replace it. The whole point of using "Pentium" instead of "i586" was trademark and brand identity, and going back to numbers and letters loses that.

Sure, they lose the idiot audience from the 90s who ask questions like "what does that mean in terms of Pentium numbers?"

But this is a win for them in the long run. By slapping on letters and numbers to Intel, makes Intel the household name. A name that isnt restricted to a model or decade that can stay a household name for years to come, where as every model name will eventually have to die.

Those same idiots will soon be asking "What does that mean in terms of Intel letters and numbers?" when referring to an AMD processor. And they will never have to learn another name again.

    4. Profit!

They don't want to be MSN.com, they want to be AOL. Hook them with a trial and "look how easy it is when it's all in one place!". The average user that is just now signing up is probably a Windows convert, and doesn't know "if Gmail will work on a Mac", anyways.

  12. Re:This wouldn't surprise me.... on iCell in the Works? · · Score: 1

I was against the concept of a camera in a cell phone for a longtime.

After I got a phone that had one, I started to think what it would be good for. I figured it was a comfort to have it in the case of an accident.

Sure enough, I got into a small fender-bender in a parking lot. It was completely the other person's fault (they backed into me), but they later tried to blame me! Luckily, after it happened, I snapped some pics on my phone and sent them to my insurance company and theirs.

The photos show clearly where my car was and where their car was. My insurance company didn't pay a dime. I received a check from theirs.

So I don't think convergence in this respect is a bad thing.

Ironically enough, the woman who caused the accident was being distracted by the camera feature on her phone, instead of looking in her rear-view mirror.

Finally, one of the comments further down says that "Blue-ray" is a cooler name. Don't discount this. I think that "Blue-ray" as a term resonates with both us geeks and the public. Silly as it might be for us, using specifications and capacity, etc., the coolness factor of something simple like a name might sway the buying public.

However, "HD-DVD" sounds like a defacto standard. Keep in mind the reason why so much bland music and movies are so successful is they're showing everyone something theyve already seen before. The mindless masses like what they know, it makes them comfortable. When you hear "HD-DVD" you know exactly what it is, without ever having heard of it. When you say "Blue-Ray" to an average Joe, he has no idea what youre talking about. Were starting with people who have never experienced either, and familiarity goes a long way.
